Membrane filtration systems have been focusing and increasing rapidly in the filed of drinking water treatment because of several reasons. We describe briefly the present state of membrane filtration processes for drinking water treatment in Japan: including background, objectives, membrane suppliers, and some cases of actual plants.
In recent years it has become necessary to design water management system to minimize water consumption as well as satisfy more stringent environmental requirements. This is mainly due to the seasonal water shortage and environmental problems on water pollution that have taken place at many industrialized regions in Korea. Accordingly, membrane technology in Korea is finding increasing application in the water industry because it has been found to be effective and economic treatment method compared with conventional technology. The membrane processes with the greatest potential for water and wastewater treatment are microfiltration(MF), ultrafiltration(UF), nanofiltration(NF) and reverse osmosis (RO), which utilize pressure differentials.
The introduction of invasive marine species into new environments by ship's ballast water, attached to ships' hulls and via other vectors has been identified as one of the four greatest threats to the world's oceans by Global Environment Facility (GEF). EMO (International Maritime Organization) is carrying out the international restriction of the effluence suppression and treatment of Ship's ballast water by Ballast Water Management Convention. In this paper, to deal with this international restriction convention and to consider economic potential of ship's ballaster treatment market near future, the equipment and technology of ship's ballaster water treatment was studied.
In order to examine the tailorability of advanced sewage treatment of a separated sewer pipe, we observed the quality of leaked water in a reactor. A2C affiliation and MBR affiliation decreased by over 78% in cases of BOD, COD, and SS. SBR affiliation decreased by 79.1% in a case of T-N. Overall, the efficiency of T-N on the above affiliations was low. SS had the high efficiency in MBR affiliation. In the end, examination of water quality improvement showed that the quality was improved from 20% to 90%; hence, it is expected that this treatment can protect the water resources of the Hongcheon River and makes it easier to use the water of the river.

The rapid growth of algae occurs can induce the algae bloom when nutrients are supplied from anthropogenic sources such as fertilizer, animal waste or sewage in runoff the water currents or upwelling naturally. The algae blooms creates the human health problem in the environment as well as in the water resource managers including hypoxic dead zones and harmful toxins and pose challenges to water treatment systems. The algal blooms in the source water in water treatment systems affects the drinking water taste & odor while clogging or damaging filtration systems and putting a strain on the systems designed to remove algal toxins from the source water. This paper propose the emerging In-Situ self-diagnosable smart algae sensing device with wireless connectivity for smart remote monitoring and control. In this research, we developed the In-Site Algae diagnosable sensing device with wireless sensor network (WSN) connectivity with Optical Biological Sensor and environmental sensor to monitor the water treatment systems. The proposed system emulated in real-time on the water treatment plant and functional evaluation parameters are presented as part of the conceptual proof to the proposed research.
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of drinking water containing trimethyl glycine or ascorbic acid on growth performance and blood parameter profiles of duck exposed to scorching heat stress. A total of 480 ducks were randomly assigned to the following eight experiment groups for 42 days : control group C with general water, treatment group 1 (T1) with drinking water containing 100 ppm ascorbic acid, treatment group 2 (T2) with drinking water containing 200 ppm ascorbic acid, treatment group 3 (T3) with drinking water containing 300 ppm ascorbic acid, treatment group 4 (T4) with drinking water containing 400 ppm trimethyl glycine, treatment group 5 (T5) with drinking water containing 800 ppm trimethyl glycine, treatment group 6 (T6) with drinking water containing 1,200 ppm trimethyl glycine, treatment group 7 (T7) with electrolytes of KCl (0.5%) + $NaHCO_3$ (1.0%)+NaCl (0.5%). Our results revealed that the body weights and feed intakes of treatment groups, especially T3 and T6, were increased compared to the control group, where as the feed conversion ratios of treatment groups were decreased (p<0.05). Blood levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-C, glucose, AST, ALT and pH in treatment groups were lower compared to those in the control group (p<0.05). Blood levels of red blood cell, platelets profiles, electrolyte and gas in treatment groups were higher compared to those of the control group (p<0.05).

Water quality in the public water course has been polluted more seriously than ever before due to the increase of the number and aremount of pollution sources such as domestic and industrial wastewater. For water quality conservation, the Korean government has been trying to construct sewage treatment facilities continually, of which treatment capacity reached to 11,452,400m$^{3}$/day in 1996. Night soil treatment facilites of m nationwide have the treatment capacity of 24,038m$^{3}$/day. But water quality has not been improved because the sewer systems were insufficient and the treatment efficiencies of sewage were not high, enough. For renovation of water quality, miscellaneous domestic wastewater must be treated because 27g BOD/day out of total 40g BOD/person-day come from miscellaneous wastewater, comparing to 13g BOD/day from night soil. However, sole treatment purifier treat only night soil from the flushing toilet. Therefore, it may be desirable to treat the miscellaneous domestic wastewater and the night soil from flushing toilet together by joint treatment purifier system as on-site domestic wastewater treatment technology. In Korea, the joint treatment purifier system, introduced in 1997, have the benefit as follows; i) good water poiluion control effect, ii ) good effect on river water flow, iii) water pollution control with sewage treatment facility, and iv) rapid pollution control effect, etc. In order to achieve a good effect as stated before, i ) strengthening effluent guideline including BOD, nitrogen and phosphorus, ii ) specializing operation to maintain high performance, and iii) supporting its construction and maintenance costs by the governmental level may be necessary: In addition, automation system of joint treatment purifier, technology for its package and compactness, and a new bio-media bio-filter with higher capacity should be further developed in agreement with a more stringent effluent guideline.
Wastewater treatment using ferrate (VI) solution is becoming a promising technology for several years, because it is high efficient and harmless technology. In this study, the ferrate (VI) solution was tested to treatment of desulfurization wastewater. The effluent from desulfurization wastewater treatment process of power plant was used as raw water, and the COD and T-N removal efficiency of ferrate(VI) solution were investigated. In the test, as the injection rate increased from 0.1 to 1.0%, the removal efficiency of COD also slightly increased, about 80% of COD were removed in 1.0% of injection rate. In the case of T-N, about 50% of T-N was removed in the condition of 1.0% of injection rate. The removal efficiency of COD and T-N also affected by reaction time, maximum removal efficiency was shown in 30 min of treatment. From these results, the wastewater treatment with ferrate(VI) solution can be great solutions for treatment of non-biodegradable pollutants in wastewater, especially for the 3rd treatment of wastewater.
A blast furnace slag(BFS) has been used as a filter medium for the treatment of domestic waste waters during the period of 9-month. More than 90% of phosphorus was removed while the hardness of the treated water increased by 5 times and the pH was significantly raised from 6.8 to 10.8. The high hardness and pH of the treated water indicated dissolution of BSF by the sewage. The experimental results suggest that BFS could be utilized for the removal of phosphorus in the waste water treatment plant using aquatic plants and gravels.
