The effects of nonionic surfactants on detergency and water wetting/retention properties of soiled cotton cloths were reported. Two different soiled cloths were used. soiled cotton cloth 1 was made in the lab. with carbon black, tripalmitin, n-dodecane & palmitic acid on Korea Apparel Testing & Research Institute(KATRI) cotton testcloth and soiled cotton cloth 2(EMPA 101) was purchased from Testfabrics, Inc., USA. The following nonionic surfactants; l.e., Span 20, Tween 20, 40, 60, 80, 21, 61, 81, 65, & 85, were used in the study. The water retention ratio(W/H) values of soiled cotton cloths were decreased, whereas the water contact angle values of soiled cloth were not changed markedly compared with those of unsoiled testcloths. The wetting and water retention of soiled cotton cloth 1 was improved with addition of nonoinic surfactants. The surfactants which have more hydrophilic characterictics or unsaturated hydrophobe tails were effective in improving wetting and water retention properties of soiled cotton cloth 1. The water contact angle values of soiled cotton cloths were extremely low with Span 20, presumably due to the high adsorption density or the surfactant. The detergency of soiled cloths were low in Span 20 and high in Tween 20, 40, 60 & 80 0.1g/dl surfactant solutions. Nonionic surfactants having higher ethylene oxide contents resulted in better detergency. In the range studied, the wetting and water retention of soiled cotton cloths did not show any particular relation to the detergency, whereas the surfactant characteristics, especially HLB values, influenced the detergency of soiled cotton cloths.
Two types of polyurethane-acrylate polymer were synthesized by reaction of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA), acrylamide(AA), and polyurethane prepolymer. Water-soluble cationic polyurethane/acrylate retention aids were prepared by using polyurethane-acrylate, benzyl chloride and distilled water. The retention, drainage and strength properties of the retention aids were investigated. The retention of cationic polyurethane/acrylate type retention aids maintained around 70 % regardless of nm. COD value of white water was much reduced by adding the retention aids to it. Drainage property was also improved by addition of the retention aids. In addition, specific compression strength of the paper was improved a little by addition of the retention aids. PU-HEMA type showed better performance than PU-AA in terms of compression strength of the paper.
Retention of ascorbic acid in vegetables as influenced by various blanching methods was measured and the effects of blanching time, amount of water added, and with or without lid on the retention were compared. It was found that blanching with small amount of water and without lid generally retained the higher activity of ascorbic acid. Although steam blanching showed the highest retention of the vitamin, the longer heating time was needed to blanch the vegetables. Blanching by microwave oven has revealed that addition of small amount of water did not affect the retention. From the scoring difference test for texture of blanched spinach, the samples which were indicated as best in texture by the 8-panel members have retained 73~96% of ascorbic acid and samples blanched by microwave oven for 60 seconds showed highest retention.
Water soluble hydroxyalkyl methycellulose ethers are used in a variety of applications incluing building industry as a supplementary agent used for incresing adhesives, water retention capacity, workability and viscosity modify. Water retention capacity(WRC) is the capability to contain water in the ploymer chain under condition of being mixed with cement. In general, the WRC is affected by the viscosity, the adding amount, the particle size, the rate of dissolving and the amount of substituted chemical in cellulose ethers. In the other words, WRC is increased as higher the viscosity, more adding amount, finer the particle size and longer the dissolving time of cellulose ethers. This thesis investigated each factor that effect the WRC, particularly the relation between degree of substitution(DS), molar of substitution(MS) and WRC. It is observed that WRC is not nearly affected by DS of cellulose ethers, but is changes proportionally as MS increases in the narrow range(0.10~2.25)
This study was carried out to analyze water cycle characteristics and evaluate water retention function in Jeju Gotjawal forest from 2013 to 2017. The average ratio of throughfall, stemflow, interception loss in Seonhul Gotjawal (SH) and Cheongsu Gotjawal (CS) was 43.1%, 15.8%, and 41.1%, respectively. Rainfall-throughfall, rainfall-stemflow, and rainfall-interception loss were expressed as linear regression equation (p<0.001). The comparison results showed that SH was higher than CS (p<0.05), indicating that the canopy area had an important effect on the difference in stand structure. The average water resources retention rate of the Gotjawal region was 41.9%, which is similar to the total water resources retention rate (40.6%) of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province (JSSGP). Currently, the development of Gotjawal is in progress in JSSGP. The development of Gotjawal will lead to a decrease in the water resources retention rate due to changes in the surface environment such as an increase in impervious areas, which will affect the total groundwater content of JSSGP. Therefore, the conservation of the Gotjawal area is judged to be very important from the point of view of water conservation.

Today's paper industry tries to use greater amount of high yield pulp and recycled fiber and to close mill water system, which results in higher fines content and buildup of organic and inorganic contaminants in white water system. Researches are being focused to develop chemical additives that provide good retention and drainage in a closed papermaking system. A microparticle retention system consisted of cationic guar gum and anionic colloidal silica so has been developed to meet the requirements for improving machine speed and product quality. The objective of this investigation was to determine the effects of the degree of cationic guar gums, charge density and structure of anionic colloidal silica sols, and the degree of system closure on the performances of this microparticle retention system. Cationic guar gums and anionic colloidal silica sols with higher charge densities showed better retention performance. Particularly, wider maximum in retention was obtained when structure colloidal silica was used suggesting as mechanism of microparticle bridging is functioning in this system.
The effects of nonionic surfactant solutions of 0.1g/dL on detergency and liquid wetting/retention properties of soiled polyester/cotton(65/35) cloth were studied. Soiled polyester/cotton(65/35) cloth (EMPA 104) and 10 different nonionic surfactants (Span 20, Tween 20, 40, 60, 80, 21, 61, 81, 65, 85) were used in the study. The water retention and liquid retention capacity values of soiled cloth were decreased compared with those of unsoiled cloth. The wetting and water retention of soiled cloth improved with addition of surfactants, whereas water retention ratio(W/H) values didnot change markedly. Generally surfactants with low surface tension and high HLB (Hydrophile-lipophile balance) were more effective in improving the wetting/retention properties of soiled cloth. Nonionic surfactants having high ethylene oxide contents of 20 moles; i.e., Tween 20, 40, 60 & 80, showed better detergency than low ethylene oxide contents of 4 moles; i.e., Tween 21, 61 & 81. As HLB values of surfactants and $cos{\theta}$ of the soiled cloth increase, the detergency values of soiled cloth increased.
The effects of 0.1g/dl nonionic surfactant solutions on liquid wetting and retention properties of wool fabric are reported. The 10 different nonionic surfactants (Span 20, Tween 20, 40, 60, 80, 21, 61, 81, 65, 85), wool cloth (EMPA 217), and wool soiled cloth (EMPA 107) are used in the study. Both EMPA 217 and 107 have water contact angle($\Theta$)>$90^{\circ}$, which indicates that water spreading over a fabric surface and penetration into the fabric rarely occur. However, EMPA 217 and 107 are easily wetted with perchloroethylene(PCE) having very low values of $\Theta$'s and high values of liquid retention. Water wetting properties are greatly improved by adding nonionic surfactants into the system. Generally, hydrophilic surfactants which have low number of carbon atoms or unsaturated hydrophobic structures are effective in improving water wetting of wool fabrics. The water retention of EMPA 217 and 107 in surfactant solutions have positive relations with $cos{\Theta}$, adhesion tension, and work of adhesion. 40.3% pore volume of EMPA 217 and 26.1% pore volume of EMPA 217 can be filled with water even when we assume $cos{\Theta}=1$ (${\Theta}=0^{\circ}$).
The effect of blanching time, blanching water and power settings of microwave oven on the minerals retention in spinach and broccoli were investigated. The vegetables were blanched for 60, 120 and 180 sec, with water 0ml, 50ml and 100ml every 100 g of raw material at two different power settings (700w, 400w). The retention of minerals(Ca,K,Mg,Cu,Fe,Na,p) in spinach and broccoli were higher at the 400w power than 700w power level, regardless of blanching time. At the high power, the retention of minerals in spinach and broccoli were reduced remarkably as the blanching time increased. The reason for this is that the increasing power level results in greater water coming ou from the vegetable. Also, minerals in vegetable as coming out with this water loss in proportion to the blanching time.
Retention of mono-substituted phenols in reversed-phase liquid chromatography has been studied based on the linear solvation energy relationships using the solvatochromic mobile phase parameters, ${\pi}_m^{\ast}, {\alpha}_m$ and ${\beta}_m$. It has been observed that retention behavior of phenols in RPLC were well represented by regression equations vs. solvatochromic mobile phase parameters even though the equations may be incomplete due to lack of an explicit cavity term. Dependence of retention of monosubstituted phenols on the mobile phase properties were varied depending on the type of the organic cosolvent in the mobile phase, e.g., ${\beta}_m$ and {\alpha}_m$ in methanol-water system, but ${\pi}_m^{\ast} and ${\beta}_m$ in THF-water system. It has been suggested that retention of phenols in methanol-water system is controlled by the solvophobicity of the mobile phase.
