  • Room temperature vulcanizing(RTV)silicone rubber has been widely used to coat porcelain insulators to render water repellency to prevent formation of water filming on the surface and thus to suppress the leakage current and consequent flashover. However, the electrical property and its hydrophobicity of RTV silicone rubber coating under outdoor conditions may be influenced by many environmental factors. In this study various treatments, such as salt-fog, salt water immerging and UV irradiation were applied to samples for investigation the change of the electrical property and hydrophobicity. As a result the leakage current increased and contact angle decreased as the degradation time longer. But the degraded RTV silicone rubber has recovered its hydrophobicity during the drying time in ambient condition because LMW(Low Molecular Weight)silicone fluid diffused from the bulk to the surface.

  • We investigated the fabrication method of superhydrophobic nanocoating prepared by a simple spin-coating and the chemisorption of fatty acid. The resulting coating showed a tremendous water repellency (static water contact angle = $154^{\circ}$) and the water contact angle can be modulated by changing the number of deposition cycles of ZnO and the carbon length of Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAM). Varying the number of deposition cycles of ZnO controlled the surface roughness, and affected to the superhydrophobicity. This simple coating method can be universally applicable to any substrates including flexible surfaces, papers and cotton fabrics, which can effectively be used in various potential applications. We also observed the thermal and dynamic stabilities of SAM on ZnO nanoparticles. The superhydrophobicic surface maintained its superhydrophobic properties below $250^{\circ}C$ and under dynamic conditions.

  • Efficiency of a fuel cell is determined by the generated water. If water is not removed sufficiently, water will be accumulated at GDL, which causes flooding. Therefore, water control is regarded as a crucial factor to sustain fuel ell performance. In this study, PTFE coating on the surface of carbon paper was carried out to establish optimum process for hydrophobic treatment of GDL. Carbon paper was immersed at different concentrations of nano-sized PTFE coating solution. Their characteristics were analyzed systematically by FE-SEM, water contact angle, cyclic voltamogam, XRD and FT-IR. The quantitative correlation between the amount of coated-PTFE on a carbon paper and concentration of coating solution was carefully investigated. It is suggested that the amount of PTFE-coating on a carbon paper can be managed by means of controling concentration of coating solution.

  • It is important in the durable water and oil repellent finishing for wool fabric what kinds of water-repellent agents will be used. Water repellent agents and its concentration were aleady chosen in the previous paper, one of the crosslinking agents which has less damages(harsh handle or yellowing) to the treated fabrics was a low molecular weight urethane-based resins(eg. Elastron BN-11). In repellent finishing, fabrics were padded in a bath which contained aqueous solution of water-repellent agents, and crosslinking agents, and wetting agents, followed by drying and curing. The most suitable treating condition for excellent repellency and durability to dry-cleaning was as follows : Fabrics are padded at liquor pick-up ratio of 50%, with aqueous solution which contained $30g/\ell$ of water-repellent agents, and $1g/\ell$ of crosslinking agents, and 40g/s of wetting agents. And the padded fabrics were dried at $110^\circ{C}$ for 1 minute, and cured at $160^\circ{C}$ for 1 minute. For the fabrics, water and oil repellencies and durability to repeated dry-cleanings were observed. For enhancing the durability to dry-cleaning, the role of crosslinking agents was important for they bonds water-repellent agents and fibers to 3-dimensional net structure. Therefore, the most suitable drying and curing conditions should be selected according to the kinds of crosslinking agents.

  • In this study, Water Repellent Finish was carried out before dyeing on cotton fabrics. It was aimed to improve on dyeing properties of cotton fabrics with direct dye. The results obtained were summerized as follows: 1. The K/S value of water repellent finished cotton fabrics increased. This phenomena in water repellent finished cotton fabrics were much more noticiable than unfinished cotton fabrics. 2. The color fastness(light, washing, and rubbing) of water repellent finished cotton-dyed were worse than those of unfinished cotton-dyed with direct dye. △E of water repellent finished cotton fabrics wasn't showed significant difference as compared with that of unfinished cotton fabrics. 3. The water repellency of finished cotton after dyeing got down from 100 to 70. That of finished-cotton before dyeing was 100. 4. Moisture regain, stiffness and weight of finished cotton fabrics were not almost differenciated with unfinished cotton fabrics. Moreover, the tensile strength of finished cotton fabrics was increased compared to that of unfinished cotton fabrics. As conclusion, according to the above results when the cotton fabrics were dyed with direct dye, it was much more effective that water repellent finished cotton fabrics were dyed rather than trational process, that is pre-dyeing after-finishing even if, by low liquor ratio. The physical properties of fabrics were maintained or increased.

  • Non-fluorinated water repellent coating solutions were obtained using methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and trimethylethoxysilane (TMES) as precursors. The solutions were spin-coated on a cold-rolled steel sheet and cured thermally to prepare water repellent coating films. During this process, the effect of molar ratio of TMES/MTMS was studied for the hydrophobic properties of the coating films. Hydrophobic properties of coating films were characterized using contact angle measurement, surface morphology analysis and infrared spectroscopy. When the molar ratio of TMES/MTMS was varied from 0 to 30, the contact angle of the un-coated cold-rolled steel sheet was $30^{\circ}$, whereas when the molar ratio of TMES/MTMS was 1, the contact angle increased to $104^{\circ}$ and water repellency was significantly improved. In the case of TMES/MTMS molar ratios of 10, 15, 25 and 30, the contact angles of coating films showed $109^{\circ}$, $114^{\circ}$, $117^{\circ}$ and $144^{\circ}$, respectively. At this time, the hydrophobicity of the coating films was improved by the increase of the surface roughness and the content of the methyl component at the coating surface. In particular, when the molar ratio of TMES/MTMS was 30, the overall surface roughness was greatly increased due to the presence of surface particles as well as the water repellency due to methyl groups of TMES, resulting in super hydrophobicity of $144^{\circ}$.

  • In this study, we fabricated the superhydrophobic and super-water-repellent surface with the micro/nano scale structures using simple conventional silicon wet-etching technique and the black silicon method by deep reactive ion etching. These fabrication methods are simple but very effective. Also we reported the droplet impact experimental results on the micro/nano-scaled surface. There are two representative impact behaviors as "rebound" and "fragmentation". We found the transition Weber number between "rebound" and "fragmentation" statements, experimentally. Additionally, we concerned about the dimensionless spreading diameters for our super-water-repellent surface. The novel characterization method was introduced for analysis including the "fragmentation" region. As a result, our super-water-repellent surface with the micro/nano-scaled structures shows the different impact behaviors compared with a reference smooth surface, by some meaningful experiments.

  • The rain-wind induced vibration of stays is a phenomenon discovered recently and not well explained yet. As it is influenced by a wide range of physical parameters (cable size and shape, wind speed, direction and turbulence, rain intensity, material repellency and roughness, cable weight, damping and pre-strain), this peculiar phenomenon is difficult to reproduce in laboratory controlled conditions. A successful wind tunnel experimental campaign, in which some basic physical quantities were measured, allowed an extensive analysis as to identify the parameters of the rain-wind induced excitation. The unsteady pressure field and water thickness around a cable model were measured under rainy-excited conditions. The knowledge of those parameters provided helpful information about the air-flow around the cable and allowed to clarify the physical phenomenon which produces the excitation.

  • Hydrophobic and Superhydrophobic surfaces are promising technology for the surface finishing of metallic materials due to its water-repellency. Realization of highly water-repellent surface on aluminum and its alloys provides various functionalities for real application fields. In order to realize the hydrophobic/superhydrophobic surfaces on aluminum and its alloys, various technologies have been demonstrated. Especially, traditional anodic oxidation for aluminum has been widely employed for the morphological texturing of surfaces, which is essential to enhance the hydrophobic efficiency. De-wetting superhydrophobic surface on aluminum provides various exceptional properties, such as anti-corrosion, anti-/de-icing, anti-biofouling, drag reduction, self-cleaning and liquid separation. Nevertheless, the durability and stability of superhydrophobic surfaces still remain challenges for their actual applications in engineering systems and industry. In this review, the theoretical/experimental studies and current technical limitations on the hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surface using anodic oxidation of aluminum have been summarized.
