Aim of this research was to investigate the effects of Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for sensitivity analysis with two types of DEMs: 1 to 24,000 and 1 to 250,000 DEM. Another emphasis was given to the development of methodology for processing DEMs to create ArcGIS Pro and GRASS layers. This was done while developing water quality system modeling using DEMs which were used to model hydrological processes and SWAT model. Sensitivity analysis with DEMs resulted in different runoff volumes in the model simulation. Runoff volume was higher for the 1:24,000 DEM than 1:250,000 DEM, probably due to the finer resolution and slope which increased the estimated runoff from the watershed. Certainly the DEMs were factors in precision of the simulations and it was obvious during sensitivity analysis that DEMs had significant effect on runoff volumes. We suggest, however, that additional comparative research could be conducted involving more parameters such as soil and hydrologic parameters to provide insight into the overall physical system which the SWAT model represents.
A modeling system that can consider the overall water environment and be used to integrate hydrology, water quality, and aquatic ecosystem on a watershed scale is essential to support decision-making in integrated water resources management (IWRM). In adapting imported models for evaluating the unique water environment in Korea, a platform perspective is becoming increasingly important. In this study, a modeling platform is defined as an ecosystem that continuously grows and provides sustainable values through voluntary participation- and interaction-of all stakeholders- not only experts related to model development, but also model users and decision-makers. We assessed the conceptual values provided by the IWRM modeling platform in terms of openness, transparency, scalability, and sustainability. I We also reviewed the technical aspects of functional and spatial integrations in terms of socio-economic factors and user-centered multi-scale climate-forecast information. Based on those conceptual and technical aspects, we evaluated potential modeling platforms such as Source, FREEWAT, Object Modeling System (OMS), OpenMI, Community Surface-Dynamics Modeling System (CSDMS), and HydroShare. Among them, CSDMS most closely approached the values suggested in model development and offered a basic standard for easy integration of existing models using different program languages. HydroShare showed potential for sharing modeling results with the transparency expected by model user-s. Therefore, we believe that can be used as a reference in development of a modeling platform appropriate for managing the unique integrated water environment in Korea.
Oship stream is located nearby south eastern coasts. This study was performed to find out waters quality modeling and then to predict water quality of Oship stream. Based on survey data, BOD, T-N, T-P calibration and verification result were in good agreement with measured value within mean coefficient variance(MSE) value, which were 13.9%, 9.0%, 26.5% and 19.5%, 12.0%, 16.5%, respectively. Sectional water quality predictions of the main stream of Oship stream are executed on the basis of the following cases 1) with sewage treatment of Dogye-eup 2) reduction of mine wastewater treatment of 80% in th basin. As a result, BOD, T-P improvement rates at down stream of Oship stream, case 1) were appeared 12.2%, 22.2%, case 2) maximum sulfate ion and conductivity reduction removal rate of Oship stream were 58%, 68%. The main pollution sources of Oship-stream were almost domestic wastewater and mine wastewater discharged from Dogye-eup which located in uppers stream. The large effects will appear after the construction of Dogye sewage water treatment plant which remove the organic matter and nutrients in these sewage water. The waste water from mine can not easily to treat for characteristics of effluence and economic problems. However, to achieve the goal of water quality in Oship-stream water system, treatments of those are necessary.
This study was carried out as the Anyang creek water quality management using Geographic Information System (GIS) is the purpose of this pilot project to apply a GIS to environmental management field. Analysis of water quality data has been investigated using GIS with modeling of water quality management for the Anyang creek. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. The concentration of Mercury in sediment was increased rapidly nearby A26(Nightsoil Treatment Plant) and maximum was showed at A18 (Imgok bridge). Cadmium was increased rapidly at A35(Chulsan bridge). 2. River water quality management using visible computer system as GIS is effective to make decision for water quality management plan and database of environmental factors should be completed before applying GIS. 3. When water pollution accident is occurred in the river water system, pollutant source can be traced and analysed systematically using GIS to manage pollutants discharged into the river water system.

An automatic flow and water quality monitoring system was applied to estimate pollutant loads to an urban stream during storm events in DTV (Daeduk Techno Valley), Daejeon, Korea. The monitoring system consists of rainfall gage, ultrasonic water level meter, water quality sensors for DO, temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity and automatic water sampler for further laboratory analysis. All data are transmitted through on-line system and the monitoring system is designed to be controlled manually in the field and remotely from laboratory computer. Flow rates were verified with field measurements during storm events and showed good agreements. Automatic sampler was used to collect real time samples and analyzed for BOD, COD, TN, TP, SS and other pollutant concentrations in the laboratory. SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) urban watershed model was applied and calibrated using the observed flow and water quality data for the study area. While flow modeling results showed good agreement for all events, water quality modeling results showed variable levels of agreement. These results indicate that current options in the SWMM model to predict pollutant build up and wash-off effects are not sufficient to satisfy modeling of all the rainfall events under study and thus need further modification. This study showed the automatic monitoring system can be used to provide data to assist further refinement of modeling accuracy. This automatic stormwater monitoring and modeling system can be used to develop basin scale water quality management strategies of urban streams in storm events.
Water modeling experiments and computer simulation for the predictions of defects of die castings are very important to produce high quality castings with less cost. The relation between the variable air vent system and the characteristics of the fluid flow in the die cavity is studied by using water modeling tests, which give ideas on reasonable designing of die cavity, vent arrangement and gating system. In order to test the water modeling, injection is done by using water containing NaCl. Flow behaviors in cavities are visualized by high speed camera and video tape recorder, and local filling time is measured with electrode sensors. Special attention is paid to the configuration of die cavity. Simulated results by computer are examined and compared with the results of water modeling experiments. There are close correlations between the simulated results and water modeling ones.
Current water quality monitoring systems in Korea carried based on in-situ grab sample analysis. It is difficult to improve the current water quality monitoring system, i.e. shorter sampling period or increasing sampling points, because the current systems are both cost- and labor-intensive. One possible way to improve the current water quality monitoring system is to adopt a modeling approach. In this study, a modeling technique was introduced to support the current water quality monitoring system, and an artificial neural network model, the computational tool which mimics the biological processes of human brain, was applied to predict water quality of the river. The approach tried to predict concentrations of Total coliform at the outlet of the river and this showed, somewhat, poor estimations since concentrations of Total coliform were rapidly fluctuated. The approach, however, could forecast whether concentrations of Total coliform would exceed the water quality standard or not. As results, modeling approaches is expected to assist the current water quality monitoring system if the approach is applied to judge whether water quality factors could exceed the water quality standards or not and this would help proper water resource managements.

Water quality problems in rivers, lakes, and estuaries have become serious in Korea. In order to overcome eutrophication of freshwater lakes and river basins, systematic management of water quality is necessary. To manage water quality in freshwater lakes and basins, apply hydrological models suitable for the basin and water quality models such as rivers and lakes to reduce water pollution based on the prediction results of these models. Improvement measures must be presented. In order to apply appropriate water pollution improvement measures in the watershed, accurate pollution sources must be identified and pollution loads must be predicted and presented. Based on GIS, the connection between the pollutant database and the hydrological and water quality prediction model will be integrated based on spatial location, making it possible to provide systematic support to improve watershed water quality by comprehensively including the water quality modeling process. In this paper, in order to accurately predict water pollution in freshwater lakes and river basins, a water quality model system is established using GIS-based spatial information to present a comprehensive water quality management method for freshwater lake basins in the future, and to systematically manage pollution sources through water quality modeling. This study was conducted to easily and efficiently operate hydrological and water quality models using automated spatial information.
Tidal flow and water quality were simulated in this paper to assess environmental impact caused by pier construction projects in Onsan harbor system. The Surfacewater Modeling System (SMS) was applied to the Onsan harbor system, where coastal reclamation and dredging were planned to build the piers. A finite element mesh was constructed and refined to cover the complicated geometry of the Onsan harbor and the proposed reclamation area. The time variable change of tidal height at harbor inlet was given as an input condition to tidal simulation. The water quality simulation was based on the discharge rate of suspended solids at the reclamation area. The simulation results have shown reasonable agreements with real situations in both tidal flow and water quality. According to the proposed plan, tidal flow and water quality were predicted during and after the pier construction. The tidal simulation study showed that there would be no discernible change of tidal current in the harbor except for the dredged area. The water quality simulation, however, predicted that suspended solids would increase significantly near the reclaimed and dredged areas during construction.
The purpose of this study is to develop a Water Quality Management System(WQMS), which calculates pollutant discharge and forecasts water quality with a water pollution model. Operational water quality management requires not only controlling pollutants but acquiring and managing exact information. A GIS software, ArcView 3.1 was used to enter or edit geographic data and attribute data, and Avenue Script was used to customize the user interface. PCI, a remote sensing software, was used to derive land cover classification from 20 m resolution SPOT data by image processing. WQMS has two subsystems, database subsystem and modelling subsystem. The database subsystem consisted of watershed data from digital maps, remote sensing data, government reports, census data and so on. The modelling subsystem consisted of NSPLM(NonStorm Pollutant Load Model) and SPLM(Storm Pollutant Load Model). It calculates the amount of pollutant and predicts water quality. These two subsystems were connected through a graphic display module. This system has been calibrated for and applied to Mokhyun Stream watershed.
