  • Characterization of reliable field-scale root-zone soil moisture (RZSM) variability contribute to effective hydro-meterological monitoring. Although a promising cosmic-ray neutron probe (CRNP) holds the pontential for field-scale RZSM measurement, it is often restricted at deeper depths due to the non-unique sensitivity of CRNP-measured fast neutron signal to other hydrogen pools. In this study, a merging framework relied on coupling cosmic-ray soil moisture with a representative additional RZSM, was introduced to scale shallower CRNP effective depth to represent root-zone layer. We tested our proposed framework over a densely vegetated region in South Korea covering a network of one CRNP and nine in-situ point measurements. In particular, cosmic-ray soil moisture and ancillary RZSM retrieved from the most time stable location were considered as input datasets; whereas the remaining point locations were used to generate a reference RZSM product. The errors between these two input datasets and the reference were forecasted by a linear autoregressive model. A linear combination of forecasts was then employed to compute a suitable weight for merging two input products from the predicted errors. The performance of merging framework was evaluated against reference RZSM in comparison to the two original products and a commonly used exponential filter technique. The results of this study showed that merging framework outperformed other products, demonstrating its robustness in improving field-scale RZSM. Moreover, a strong relationship between the quality of input data and the performance merging framework in light of CRNP effective depth variation has been also underlined via the merging framework.

  • The objective of this study was to estimate uncertainty of online TOC analyzer in water quality monitoring system. A procedure for the estimation of measurement uncertainty of total organic compounds (TOC) based on the ISO approach is presented. It is based on a mathematical model that involves 4 input parameters (standardization, sensitivity, solute effect and representativeness). In this study, a major problem in estimating the uncertainty of online TOC analyzer was the solute effect. It was strongly depends on organic materials. So homogeneity of the sample is the most important consideration. Modified concentration and combined standard uncertainty was $4.71{\pm}0.36$ mg $L^{-1}$ by model modified in this study.

  • The electricity cost of a desalination facility was also predicted and reviewed, which allowed the proposed model to be incorporated into the future design of such facilities. Input data from 2003 to 2014 of the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA) were used, and the structure of the model was determined using the trial and error method to analyze as well as hyperparameters such as salinity and seawater temperature. The future seawater quality was estimated by optimizing the prediction model based on machine learning. Results indicated that the seawater temperature would be similar to the existing pattern, and salinity showed a gradual decrease in the maximum value from the past measurement data. Therefore, it was reviewed that the electricity cost for seawater desalination decreased by approximately 0.80% and a process configuration was determined to be necessary. This study aimed at establishing a machine-learning-based prediction model to predict future water quality changes, reviewed the impact on the scale of seawater desalination facilities, and suggested alternatives.

  • This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between theoretical parameters affecting the coagulation process and the real coagulation phenomenon applied to the dye wastewater. Emphasis was placed on the effective removal of the suspend particulates. Parameters studied in this study are pH, coagulant concentration and surface potential. Optimal dosages of coagulants by the measurement of the zeta potential at lower then $25^{\circ}C$ are 5\times$10^P-3}$ M of $FeCl_3 and 1.4\times10^{-6}M of Fe_2(SO_4)_3$. The results were well agreeded with the separate Jar-test results. Emphasis was also placed on the relationship between water quality and the content of SS. It was found that the COD and DOC were reduced to 65% and 85%, respectively. The turbidity at the above condition was reduced from 300 NTU to 0~1 NTU. Efforts were made to clarify the behavior of the suspend solid as affecting the water quality. 12,000~13,000 particles/10mL in $1~50\mu$m size range particulates in the raw wastewater were reduced to 300 particle/10mL in the same range after treatment. This research has proposed the methodology to find out the optimal condition of coagulation for small scale wastewater treatment plant or chemical coagulation process.

  • Liquid fossil fuel contaminated by water can cause trouble in the combustion processes and affect the endurance of a combustion system. Using an optical sensor to monitor the water content instantaneously in a fuel pipeline is an effective means of controlling the fuel quality in a combustion system. In two component liquid flows of oil and water, the flow pattern and characteristics of water droplets are changed with various flow conditions. Additionally, the light scattering of the optical sensor measuring the water content is also dependent on the flow patterns and droplet characteristics. Therefore, it is important to investigate the detailed behavior of water droplets in the pipeline of the fuel transportation system. In this study, the flow patterns and characteristics of water droplets in the turbulent pipe flow of two component liquids of gasoline and water were investigated using optical measurements. The dispersion of water droplets in the gasoline flow was visualized, and the size and velocity distributions of water droplets were simultaneously measured by the phase Doppler technique. The Reynolds number of the gasoline pipe flow varied in the range of $4{\times}10^{4}\;to\;1{\times}10^{3}$, and the water content varied in the range of 50 ppm to 300 ppm. The water droplets were spherical and dispersed homogeneously in all variables of this experiment. The velocity of water droplets was not dependent on the droplet size and the mean velocity of droplets was equal to that of the gasoline flow. The mean diameter of water droplets decreased and the number density increased with the Reynolds number of the gasoline flow.

  • In this paper an experimental study was investigated for two-phase flow distribution in compact heat exchanger header. A test section was consisted of the horizontal bottom dividing header($\phi$: 5 mm, L: 80 mm) and 10 upward circular mini channels ($\phi$: 1.5 mm, L: 850 mm) using an acrylic tube. Three different types of tube intrusion depth were tested for the mass flux and inlet mass quality ranges of 50 - 200 kg/$m^2$s and 0.1 - 0.3, respectively. Air and water were used as the test fluids. The distribution of vapor and liquid is obtained by measurement of the total mass flow rate and the calculation of the quality. Two-phase flow pattern was observed, and pressure drop of each channel was measured. By adjusting the intrusion depth of each channel an uniform liquid flow distribution through the each channel was able to solve the mal-distribution problem.

  • Accurate measurement of green density of compacted part in the powder metallurgy industry is rather fundamental but extremely important process that decide the quality of the sintered part. In case of green sheet P/M product, the green density as well as the distribution of the density must be examined for the same reasons. Currently in most cases, density measuring process is being performed applying conventional Archimedes principles. However this method is not only time-consuming but also often inaccurate because of the inherent nature of the process, such as part sectioning, closing of surface porosity with wax and weighing in air and in water. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a faster and more accurate method to measure the density of green sheet P/M product. In this work, a nondestructive density measurement device using gamma-ray absorption principles was constructed and the optimum condition for measuring green density of P/M sheet and its distribution was sought. The results showed that this method was very effective in terms of measuring time and accuracy.

  • The quality of track-bed fills of railways has been controlled by field measurements of density $({\gamma}_d)$ and the results of plate-load tests. The control measures are compatible with the design procedures whose design parameter is $k_{30}$ for both ordinary-speed railways and high-speed railways. However, one of fatal flaws of the design procedures that there are no simple laboratory measurement procedures for the design parameters ($k_{30}$ or, $E_{v2}$ and $E_{v2}/E_{v1}$) in design stage. A new quality control procedure, in parallel with the advent of the new design procedure, is being proposed. This procedure is based upon P-wave velocity involving consistently the evaluation of design parameters in design stage and the field measurements during construction. The Key concept of the procedure is that the target value for field compaction control is the P-wave velocity determined at OMC using modified compaction test, and direct-arrival method is used for the field measurements during construction. The procedure was verified at a test site and the p-wave velocity turned out to be an excellent control measure. The specifications for the control also include field compaction water content of OMC${\pm}$2% as well as the p-wave velocity.
