This paper describes the air compressibility effect in the CFD simulation of water impact load prediction. In order to consider the air compressibility effect, two sets of governing equations are employed, namely the incompressible Navier-stokes equations and compressible Navier-Stokes equations that describe general compressible gas flow. In order to describe violent motion of free surface, volume-of-fluid method is utilized. The role of air compressibility is presented by the comparative study of water impact load obtained from two different air models, i.e. the compressible and incompressible air. For both cases, water is considered as incompressible media. Compressible air model shows oscillatory behavior of pressure on the solid surface that may attribute to the air-cushion effect. Incompressible air model showed no such oscillatory behavior in the pressure history. This study also showed that the CFD simulation can capture the formation of air pockets enclosed by water and solid surface, which may be the location where the air compressibility effect is dominant.
This study carried out submerged area due to Dam construction in the near future. It includes species classification of plant, survey of community structure, examination of pollutant load and assessment of water quality impact. The vascular plants of this area are listed 224 taxa; 64 families, 168 genera, 193 species, 30 varieties and 1 form. This study area is classified into total 21 communities, most community was consist of grass vegetation. Among the communities, Erigeron annuus ($869,286m^2$, 22%) community was dominant and Erigeron annuus-Avena fatua comminity (16%) was subdominant until May, and then Erigeron canadensis community occupied most area to $1,774,985m^2$ (32%) from May to July. For the evaluation of water quality impact due to submerged macrophyte, nutrient release test was conducted both dead body macrophyte and living body macrophyte. The results of release test show that T-N is not released at dead body macrophyte, but it is released at living body macrophyte, especially living body Artemisia priceps var. orientalis shows 1.436mgN/g. At release test of dead body macrophyte, T-P release rate of Erigeron annuus shows 0.500mgP/g at the top of them and it also shows 0.436mgP/g at Erigeron annuus of living body macrophyte. T-N load of submerged macrophyte shows 0.76% by comparison of total load on watershed and T-P load of that shows 3.61%. In case of removal macrophyte for reduction of pollutant load in submerged area, T-N load of submerged macrophyte changes from 0.76% to 0.15% by comparison of total load on watershed and T-P load of that changes from 3.61% to 0.72%.
This study compares the results of environmental impact assessment with the results of post-environmental investigation, using the case of Taean thermal power plant construction. The atmospheric and water qualities were not greatly changed before and after the construction of the power plant. However, the site of the highest concentration predicted by the atmospheric quality modeling in environmental impact assessment was different from that after operation of 4 power plants. There was also a difference in the diffusion range of thermal discharge water between the measured result(1km) and the predicted value(1.5km) with the model. Thus, environmental impact evaluation should be based on long-term (more than a year) environmental monitoring data. For the modeling of atmospheric quality and numerical thermal discharge water diffusion, appropriate models for each plant should be selected and the numerical modeling should be accompanied by computer simulation, wind tunnel test, etc. Moreover, environmental evaluation should focus more on the degree of impact on surroundings than the prediction of changes in surroundings caused by operation of plants.
A parametric study for for the water entry of a two dimensional symmetric wedge with deadrise angle of 10 degrees was carried out to find out the most dominant parameter. Water entry problem with constant velocity is simplified as the stationary wedge in the way of the upcoming water surface. The calculated impact loads showed that the effect of the viscosity was not so important in this problem. For a given grid system a suitable time step size can be found. The most sensitive parameter was found to be the grid size.
The objective of the study is to develop life cycle inventory (LCI) database of dam, a major facility for irrigation water supply. The types of database developed are three out of nine dams according to the size of the wate r storage capacity: two kinds larger than 500,000 $m^3$ depending on gate for discharging (Type 1) and the other dam smaller than 500,000 $m^3$ (Type 2). According to the LCI analysis, type 1 larger than 500,000 $m^3$ storage capacity with gate has the lowest environment impact in the 6 impact categories. The impact of the type 1 accounts for 7~35 % of the type 2 for supplying irrigation water. Comparing with the environment impacts of water for other uses such as drinking and industrial water, the impacts of 1 $m^3$ irrigation water supply is 4~45 % of the one for industrial water supply and 1~16 % of the drinking water's. The three types of LCI DB on the irrigation water by dams will be useful in the application of Life Cycle Assessment in agricultural products and environmental labelling including carbon footprint since it is complied to the guidelines of LCI DB constr uction issued by Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
Numerical simulations were performed about the green water problem of a FPSO. Three regular waves in head sea were tested. A rectangular box-shaped FPSO was considered and it is assumed there is a vertical wall on the deck. For the numerical simulations, an open-source CFD code, OpenFOAM, was applied to solve the present problems. Focus is on wave fields around the FPSO, water flows and impact pressures on the deck. For the validation, the present calculation results were compared with the existing experimental of Lee et al. (2012) and Changwon university in KTTC Cooperative Study Report (2015). The statistical values and spatial distribution of the peak pressures are directly compared with the experimental data. Some discussions are made on the effects of the domain breadth on the Green water impact pressure.
The numerical methodology for simulating water entry behaviors of the high-speed bodies has been developed. Since the present method assumed the impact occurs within a very short time interval, the viscous effects do not have enough time to play a significant role in the impact forces, that is, the flow around a water-entry object was assumed as an incompressible potential flow and is solved by the source panel method. The elements fully submerged into the water are routinely teated, but the elements intersected by the effective planar free surface are redefined and reorganized to be amenable to the source panel method. To validate the present code, it has been applied to the ogive model and compared with experimental data. Good agreement has been obtained. The water entry behavior of the bouncing phenomena from the free surface has been also simulated using the impact forces and two degree of freedom dynamic equation. Physically, acceptable results have been obtained.
Tidal flow and water quality were simulated in this paper to assess environmental impact caused by pier construction projects in Onsan harbor system. The Surfacewater Modeling System (SMS) was applied to the Onsan harbor system, where coastal reclamation and dredging were planned to build the piers. A finite element mesh was constructed and refined to cover the complicated geometry of the Onsan harbor and the proposed reclamation area. The time variable change of tidal height at harbor inlet was given as an input condition to tidal simulation. The water quality simulation was based on the discharge rate of suspended solids at the reclamation area. The simulation results have shown reasonable agreements with real situations in both tidal flow and water quality. According to the proposed plan, tidal flow and water quality were predicted during and after the pier construction. The tidal simulation study showed that there would be no discernible change of tidal current in the harbor except for the dredged area. The water quality simulation, however, predicted that suspended solids would increase significantly near the reclaimed and dredged areas during construction.
In order to evaluate and predict the environmental impact of the low-trophic-level ecosystem to environmental changes in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, an ecological modelling study was undertaken. Simulation results of average distribution patterns and concentrations of water quality factors during the summer by the model were acceptable. Phytoplankton and remineralization rate of organic matter were very important parameters by a sensitivity analysis. Water quality factors showed high values in the estuary of the Yangtze River and in the West and South Sea of Korea and low values in the central area of the Yellow Sea. There is a plume of high values, especially nutrients, off the mouth of the Yangtze that expands or contracts with changes in the discharge strength. Characteristics of responses of water quality factors vary for different scenarios of environmental change, such as land-based pollution sources and atmospheric forcing. It is suggested that changes of light intensity, discharges of input sources, and wind play an important role in the marine ecosystem.
