  • 1. Outline: The flow of the siphon spillway is very intricate and affected by vacuous condition. It is an intresting problem to make vacuum rapidly in_siphon, i.e, to provoke the perfect siphonaoge with the lowest water-level of overflow. The hydraulic experiments of siphon spillway have practiced at the Masan Lake, Haenam, the province of Junnam and gained rational and economical results which cannot be odtained by calculation. 2. Experiment: The model scale was a half of that of the prototype. 3. Results and discussion: In the experiments of 14 runs, washing, overflow water level, outlet, water level of cushion, phenomenon of water flying and water pressure of every part, etc. were studied. a) The relation of overflow water-level at siphon inlet and deflector When the elevation of the deflector is 10. 65m and the form of deflector O.4m long is the hypotenuse of an $45^{\circ}$ isosceles triangle, the over flow water-level is the minimum, i. e. the siphonage was excellent. There is no effect by the rising of overflow water-Ievel between 11.95m to 1O.65m of deflector elevation (in the first plan, it is 11.05m). But the overflow water-level rises remarkably in the outside region of the above limits. b) The relation of overflow water-level, the length of cushion and standard height of the base. The reduction of the length of cushion brings the rising of overflow waterlevel, and the rising of the standard height of the base brings the rising of overflow water level. For the long cushion length and low standard height of the base, it cannot be expeted to have the falling of overflow water-level. The most satisfactory data were obtained at 5.20m of the base standard height and 6.1m of the length of cushion. The first vah,le planned was 5.70 m and 4.30m.

  • Fire prediction, response and assessment for outdoor storage tanks are essential to disaster management because they have significant human, social and environmental impacts. Therefore, in this study, the fire situation an outdoor storage tank was simulated and the effects of fire on the radiant heat flux were analyzed concerning tank height and fire occurrence time. tank height and fire occurrence time. For this purpose, fire scenarios and specifications of the outdoor storage tank were set, and a study was carried out considered height, fire occurrence time and the operating or non-operating of a water spray system in outdoor storage tanks containing large amounts of Pentane using FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator). As a results, the radiant heat flux was reduced by more than 50% depending on whether the water spray system was m operating or not. When the water spray system was in operation, the maximum radiant heat flux was 13.75 kW/m2 at a tank height of 14 m, and when the water spray system was not 117 operation, the maximum radiant heat flux was 25.14 kW/m2 at the same tank height. Additionally, it was found that when the water spray system was in operation, the radiant heat flux was 50% lower than when the water spray system was not in operation.

  • Long-term change in sea level along the eastern coast of Korea was illustrated using four tide-gauge station (Pohang, Mukho, Sokcho, Ulleung) data, water temperature and salinity. Seasonal variation in the sea level change was dominant. The sea level change by steric height derived from water temperature and salinity was relatively lower than that measured from the tide-gauge stations. Sea level rising rate per year by steric height increased with latitude. The effect of salinity(water temperature) on the sea level change is greater in winter(in summer).

  • Experimental measurements of the heat flux to a upward impinging water jet on high heated test surface were obtained in the transition and film boiling regimes. Test variables were nozzle outlet velocity, subcooled water temperature and height of supplementary water. Boiling curve of this investigation is similar to a pool boiling curve, but it has one or two cap-shaped peaks in the transition regime. In the film boiling regime, the heat transfer rates are increased along with the increment of nozzle outlet velocity and subcooled temperature. There is optimum height of supplementary water for the augmentation of heat transfer Generalized correlations of boiling heat transfer are presented for maximum heat flux, minimum heat flux and $q_c$ at each supplementary height.

  • In this study, seismic safety of CFRD(Concrete-Face Rockfill Dam) type "D" dam in operation is evaluated from the results of 1-g shaking table test using similitude laws. Model dam is made by similitude law considering the grain size of prototype dam component. After the model dam is impounded to the normal water level(N.W.L), it is excited by artificial earthquake wave corresponding to standard design respond spectrum of the "D" dam site. Displacement response behavior of the dam is examined through the measurement of vertical and horizontal displacement of dam crest. Also, amplification characteristics of acceleration with dam height is examined through the measurement of acceleration with dam height. Finally, the purpose of this study is to evaluate seismic safety of "D" dam in operation. From the results of acceleration measurement, it was found that acceleration of dam crest was amplified about 1.52 times compared to the acceleration of dam bottom and amplification phenomenon is outstanding at three quarters of dam height from the bottom of dam. From the analysis of displacement behavior, it was estimated that vertical displacement of prototype dam is 6.8cm (0.1% of dam height) and horizontal displacement 12.3cm(0.2% of dam height). These percentages is much lower than 1% of dam height(general stability criteria). Therefore, it was concluded that seismic stability of "D" dam against an estimated earthquake is guaranteed.

  • The apparent barrier height for charge transfer through an interfacial water layer between a Pt/Ir tip and a gold surface has been measured using STM technique. The average thickness of the interfacial water layer inside an STM junction was controlled by the amount of moisture. A thin water layer on the surface was formed when relative humidity was in the range of 10 to 80%. In such a case, electron tunneling through the thin water layer became the majority of charge transfers. The value of the barrier height for the electron tunneling was determined to be 0.95 eV from the current vs. distance curve, which was independent of the tip-sample distance. On the other hand, the apparent barrier height for charge transfer showed a dependence on tip-sample distance in the bias range of 0.1-0.5 V at a relative humidity of approximately 96%. The non-exponentiality for current decay under these conditions has been explained in terms of electron tunneling and electrochemical processes. In addition, the plateau current was observed at a large tip-sample distance, which was caused by electrochemical processes and was dependent on the applied voltage.

  • To investigate the characteristics of water droplet on the gas diffusion layer from both top-view and side-view of the flow channel, a rig test apparatus was designed and fabricated with prism attached plate. This experimental device is used to simulate the growth of single liquid water droplet and its transport process with various air flow velocity and channel height. The contact angle hysteresis and height of water droplet are measured and analyzed. It is found that droplet tends towards to be instable by decreasing channel height, increasing flow velocity or making GDL more hydrophobic. Also, the simplified force balance model matches with experimental data only in a restricted range of operating conditions and shows discrepancy as the air flow velocity and channel height increases.

  • In this study, the run-up of water waves on slopes of s-berm breakwaters was investigated by performing a series of hydraulic experiments. The run-up height was analyzed in detail by using the effects of wave steepness and surf similarity parameter. In general, the run-up heights were decreased as the height and the width of berm were increased. However, the variation of run-up height was small for change of wave steepness and surf similarity parameter.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the behavior of green water on a structure with a rectangular cross section under wave conditions, along with the flow characteristics in bubbly water flow. An experiment was conducted in a two-dimensional wave flume using an acrylic model (1/125) of FPSO BW Pioneer operating in the Gulf of Mexico under its design wave condition. The occurrence of green water, including its development, in front of the model was captured using a high-speed Charge Coupled Device (CCD) camera with the shadowgraph technique. Using consecutive images, the generation procedure for green water on the model was divided into five phases: flip through, air entrapment, wave run-up, wave overturning, and water shipping. In addition, the distinct water elevations of the green water were defined as the height of flip through, height of splashing jet, and height of freeboard exceedance, and showed a linear relationship with the incoming wave height.

  • This paper contributed to the understanding of the effect of the blade relative position on performance of micro gravitational vortex turbine in free water surface. In a constant vortex flow, the rotation, voltage and current of micro vortex water turbine were measured according to the position change of the blade installed at the relative vortex height (y/hv) ranging from 0 to 0.778 below the free water surface. The flow rate ranged from 0.0063 to 0.00662 m3/s. The results of the experiments showed that relative positions of the blade affected the performance of vortex water turbine because the distributions of incoming flow velocity and turbulence intensity were changed. The highest amount of the energy generated by the vortex water turbine occurred in the relative vortex height ranging from 0.111 to 0.222. The output power at the relative vortex height of 0.111 was about 2.4 times larger than the relative vortex height of 0.588 below the free water surface.
