Antioxidant Properties and Total Phenolic Contents of Cherry Elaeagnus (Elaeagnus multiflora Thunb.) Leaf Extracts

  • In Korea and China, cherry elaeagnus (Elaeagnus multiflora Thunb.) has been used traditionally to treat cough, diarrhea, itching, and foul sores. Therefore, in this study, the ethanol and water extracts of cherry elaeagnus leaves were examined for their antioxidant activities. The ethanol extract of the cherry elaeagnus leaves contained more phenolics than the water extract. All the cherry elaeagnus leaf extracts had higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability than ascorbic acid at concentrations of $250-1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$. The ethanol extract also showed higher superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity compared to the water extract. Furthermore, the SOD-like activity of the ethanol extract amounted to 89% of that of ascorbic acid at a concentration of $500\;{\mu}g/mL$. The nitrite scavenging ability and xanthine oxidase inhibitory (XOI) activity of the ethanol extract were higher than those of the water extract. In particular, the ethanol extract had higher XOI activity than ascorbic acid at a concentration of $1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$.

번행초(Tetragonia tetragonioides)로부터 추출한 Phenolic Compounds의 미용 식품 활성 (Beauty Food Activities of Isolated Phenolic Compounds from Tetragonia tetragonioides)

  • 본 연구는 물과 ethanol을 추출용매로 사용한 번행초(Tetragonia tetragonioides) 추출물이 미용 식품 소재로 사용 가능한 기능성을 증명하고자 하였다. Phenolic compounds는 물 추출물에서 3.29 mg/g, 50% ethanol 추출물에서 4.14 mg/g의 결과를 각각 나타내었다. 전자공여능 측정 결과 $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic compounds의 농도에서 물 추출물은 98.45%, 50% ethanol 추출물은 91.20%의 활성을 나타내었다. ABTS radical 활성 측정 결과 $100{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic compounds의 농도에서 물 추출물은 97.28%, 50% ethanol 추출물은 97.03%의 활성을 나타내었다. Antioxidant protection factor(PF) 측정 결과 $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic compounds의 농도에서 물과 ethanol 추출물 모두 1.77 PF의 같은 결과를 나타내었다. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(TBARS) 측정 결과 $100{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic compounds의 농도에서 물과 ethanol 추출물은 94.77%와 95.64%의 높은 활성을 나타내었다. 미백과 관련 있는 tyrosinase 저해 활성을 측정한 결과 $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic compounds의 농도에서 ethanol 추출물은 34.96%의 억제력을 나타내었다. 주름 개선 효과를 측정하는 elastase 저해 활성과 collagenase 저해 활성을 측정한 결과 $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic compounds의 농도에서 ethanol 추출물만 78.90%와 61.3%의 높은 저해 활성을 나타내었다. 수렴 효과를 나타내는 astringent effect에서 $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic compounds 농도의 ethanol 추출물은 7.82%의 효과를 나타내었다. Hyaluronidase 저해 효과 측정 결과 물 추출물 $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic compounds의 농도에서 81.04%의 염증 억제 효과를 나타내었다. 이러한 결과들로 미루어 보았을 때 번행초 추출물은 항산화 작용과 미용 식품으로서의 기능성을 기대할 수 있다.

와송(Orostachys japonicus) 추출물의 항산화 및 생리 활성 (Antioxidative and biological activity of extracts from Orostachys japonicus)

  • 와송에 함유된 phenol성 물질은 50% ethanol을 용매로 하여 추출하였을 때 $10.56{\pm}0.32mg/g$의 함량을 나타내었다. 와송 추출물의 항산화력을 측정한 결과 전자공여능은 $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic 농도에서 열수 추출물과 50% ethanol 추출물 모두 80.0% 이상으로 높은 효과가 확인되었다. ABTS radical cation decolorization을 측정한 결과에서 와송 열수와 50% ethanol 추출물 모두 95.0% 이상의 높은 항산화 활성이 측정되었다. Antioxidant protection factor (PF)는 열수 추출물이 50% ethanol 추출물에 비해 높은 PF값을 나타내었으며, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARs) 저해효과는 50% ethanol 추출물이 열수 추출물 보다 높은 항산화력을 나타내었다. 와송 추출물의 항고혈압 효과를 살펴보기 위하여 angiotensin converting enzyme 저해활성을 측정한 결과 $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic의 처리농도에서 열수와 50% ethanol 추출물이 각각 6.67%과 7.98%로 낮게 나타났다. 와송 추출물의 XOase 저해활성은 50% ethanol 추출물 $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic 농도에서 60.85%의 저해율을 나타내었으며, tyrosinase 억제활성은 50% ethanol 추출물 $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic 농도에서 64.59%로 나타나 대조구인 kojic acid 보다 미백 효과가 더 우수함을 입증하였다. 주름 생성과 관련된 collagenase 억제효과는 50% ethanol 추출물의 $50200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic 농도에서 75.9585.02%로 매우 우수하였으며, 대조구인 epigallocatechin-gallate의 68.9176.64% 보다 다소 높았다. Elastase 저해활성도 50% ethanol 추출물 $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic 농도에서 최대 63.65%의 저해효과를 나타내어 와송 50% ethanol 추출물의 주름개선 효과가 매우 우수함을 확인하였다. 이상의 결과를 통해 와송 추출물의 항산화 활성, 통풍 억제효능, 미백 및 주름개선 등의 기능성 검증을 위한 기초 연구 자료로 활용이 가능할 것으로 예상되며, 향후 추가적인 연구를 통해 와송 추출물을 기능성 식품 및 화장품, 의약품 소재로 적용이 가능할 것으로 판단되었다.

소수성 알루미나막의 증가투과에 의한 에탄올의 분리 (Separation of ethanol/water mixtures with hydrophobic alumina membrane in vapor permeation)

  • The surface of porous alumina membrane was modified with silane coupling agent in order to enhance hydrophobicity. The contact angle of water to the surface-modified alumina membrane was greater than $90^{\circ}$. The surface-modified membrane was tested in vapor permeation for the concentration of aqueous ethanol. With the increase of ethanol concentration in the feed, permeation flux increased due to the greater affinity of ethanol with surface-modified alumina membrane than that of water. The experimental results showed that the permeation rate of surface-modified alumina membrane was 15~1000 times greater than that of polymer membranes.

약용식물 추출물의 Helicobacter pylori에 대한 항균 활성과 항산화 활성에 미치는 효과 (The Effect of Medicinal Herb Extract on Antimicrobial Activity against Helicobacter pylori and Antioxidant Activity)

  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of medicinal herb extract on the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities against Helicobacter pylori, which is known as a ulcerogenic pathogen. The concentration of total phenolic compound of Scutellaria baicalensis(13.14%) was highest among water extracts and that of Ulmus parvifolia(15.12%) was highest among the ethanol extracts. The antioxidant activity of the water extract of Scutellaria baicalensis and of the ethanol extract of Ulmus parvifolia were 91.00% and 65.03%, respectively, in DPPH assay. The antioxidant activity of the water extract of Scutellaria baicalensis and of the ethanol extract of Ulmus parvifolia were 32.90% and 27.70%, respectively, in SOD assay. The antioxidant activity of the water extract of Ulmus parvifolia and of the ethanol extract of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer was 2.15 and 2.17, respectively, in TBARS assay. In disc method, Scutellaria baicalensis showed the highest anti-microbial activity against H. pylori, followed by Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer among the water extracts and Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer showed the highest anti-microbial activity followed by Radix puerariae among ethanol extract.

산수유, 황기, 감초 추출물의 생리활성 (Biological Activities of Extracts from Corni fructus, Astragalus membranaceus and Glycyrrhiza uralensis)

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to evaluate the antioxidative and anticancer activity of the water and ethanol extracts from medicinal herbs. Methods : Three kinds of medicinal herbs(Corni fructus, Astragalus membranaceus and Glycyrrhiza uralensis) were extracted with distilled water and 70% ethanol, and the extracts were tested for their antioxidative and anticancer activities. Results : The highest polyphenol contents of the water and ethanol extracts from medicinal herbs were 342.14 mg and 435.62 mg per 100 g of Cornus officinalis, respectively. The highest electron donating abilities (EDA) of the water and ethanol extracts from Glycyrrhiza uralensis were 88% and 91% at 1,000 ppm, respectively. The water and ethanol extracts from Astragalus membranaceus had the highest nitrite scavenging abilities (NSA) at 1,000 ppm. The highest anticancer activity of the extracts were from Glycyrrhiza uralensis against both of MDA and A549 cells. Conclusions : These results suggest that the medicinal herbs can be used as natural antioxidant to prevent oxidative damage in normal cells probably because of their antioxidant characteristics.

고삼(苦蔘)(Sopora Radix) 에탄올 추출물(抽出物)을 이용(利用)한 화장수(化粧水)의 항균성(抗菌性) (The Antibiosis of Moisture Water Included the Sophora Radix Extracted by Ethanol Solvent on Bacteria)

  • The aim of study was to elucidate the antibiosis of the Sophora Radix extracts by ethanol solvent on bacterias. The antibiosis on bacterias was examined in moisture water included the Sophora Radix extract. The results are as follows; Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Sopora Radix extracts showed markedly lower on gram positive bacterias($0.0125{\sim}0.025$) such as aureus, B. subtilis, S. epidermids than that on gram negative bacterias such as E. coli, P. aeruginosa(>10). The MIC of moisture water included the Sophora Radiix which extracted by ethanol solvent was very low which meaned good antibiosis($0.0063{\sim}0.5$). The antibiosis of moisture water included the Sophora Radiix was improved by adding the ethanol on some baterias. In conclusion, Sophora Radix had excellent antibacterial effect. Therefore, it is expected that Sophora Radix can be practically used as the natural material of functional cosmetics for preventing the Bacterial inhibitory in skin.

젤라틴 전처리 면직물의 에탄올-물 혼합용매에 의한 코치닐 염색성 향상 (Improving the Dyeability of Gelatin Pretreated Cotton Fabrics Dyeing with Cochineal in Ethanol-Water Mixture)

  • Cotton fabrics were treated with gelatin to improved their dyeability, color strength toward cochineal dye. Gelatin were used as the protein. Gelatin is containing a large number of hydrophilic groups. Pad-dry-cure method was used for the treatment process(10g/L concentration). The scanning electron micrograph showed the gelatin was deposited on the surface of cotton. Pretreated fabrics were mordanted with 10%(owf) alum. Then the fabrics were dyed with cochineal. Compared with original cotton fabric the K/S value with cochineal dyes was significantly improved on gelatin modified cotton. Treating cotton with 10g/L concentration gelatin offered higher cochineal adsorption. The dyeability of pH 4 yielded the highest color strength. In dyebaths of a ratio of ethanol and water such as; 10:0, 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, 5:5, 4:6, 3:7, 2:8, 1:9, 0:10, fabrics were dyed. The ratio of ethanol and water had powerful effects on solution polarity. Cochineal dye uptake showed maximum value, when the proportion of ethanol and water was 9:1. Dyeing at increased temperatures and with increased time resulted in higher dye uptake and reddish-purple color(5RP). The washing fastness was 1-2grade, and the fastness to light was 2-3grade.

랏트에 있어서 에탄올과 삭카린이 면역반응에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Ethanol and Saccharin on the Immune Response in Rats)

  • Experiments were performed to investigate effects of ethanol and saccharin on the immune system in rats. 4% ethanol and 0.02, 0.20, 2.00% saccharin solution in 4% ethanol were provided ad libitum by tap water for 4 weeks. Rats were sensitized and challenged with sheep red blood cells (S-RBC). Immune responses were evaluated by relative immuno organ weight, antibody production, Arthus reaction, delayed type hypersensitivity, and rosette forming cell. Ethanol exposure decreased thymus weight and delayed type hypersensitivity. A combined solution of ethanol and saccharin decreased water intake, growth rate, spleen weight, thymus weight, humoral and cellular immune response. Especially, a 2% saccharin solution in 4% ethanol very significantly suppressed cellular immunity.

인삼식초에 관한연구 (Studies on Ginseng Vinegar)

  • Ginseng-vinegars were produced by the fermentation of 5% ethanol solution contained ginseng, red ginseng, ginseng marc and red ginseng marc using Acetobacter aceti 3281 for 26 days at 35$^{\circ}C$. The ginseng and red ginseng vinegar contained 0.236mg/ml of total sugar 0.236mg/ml of reducing sugar and 0.05% of ethanol and 1.005 of specific gravity 8,58CFU of viable cell count 3,24 of pH and 5.11% of acidity. Whereas the vinegars produced using the water-extracted red ginseng marc and the ethanol-extracted red ginseng marc were consisted of total sugar was 1.27mg/ml and 1.60mg/ml reducing sugar was 0.077mg/ml and 0.725mg/ml specific gravity was 1.001 and 1.004 the number of viable cells was 8.51CFU/ml and 8.1CFU/ml pH was 2.81 and 2.89 acidity was 5.18% and 5.32% respectvely ethanol concentration was 0.05% in both cases. In five-grade scoring test of sensory evaluation, it was estimated favorable that each vinegar made by were-extracted red ginseng marc, ethanol-extracted red ginseng marc ginseng and red ginseng ginseng from 0.5 to 32% of water-and ethanol-extract red ginseng was extracted with 10% white vinegar for 30 days. The best sensory vinegars were obtained that ginseng of 0.4~1.6% above red glnsend of 0.8% water-extracted red ginseng marc of 0.8~1.6% and ethanol-extracted red ginseng marc of 0.4~1.6% added in 10% white vinegar respectively.
