  • For the purpose of energy consumption and green-house gas reduction from building, new insulation materials with improved thermal property have been developed and used. Among new insulation materials, mineral hydrate which compensates for the defects of existing materials is using as a prominent insulation material. The fabrication method of mineral hydrate is similar to that of ALC for building structure but mineral hydrate is only used for insulation. The raw materials that make up of mineral hydrate are cement, lime and anhydrite. Especially anhydrite is all dependant on imports. In this study, Desulfurization Gypsum(DG), by-product of oil plant, was used for replacing for imported anhydrite and waste recycling. DG substituted all of anhydrite and a part of lime. Mineral hydrate used DG had analogous thermal and physical properties, compared to existing mineral hydrate.

  • Chemical characteristics of whitewares excavated from the of official kiln of the Choseon Dynasty period in Gwangju, Gyeonggido have been stuied using x-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma atomic absorption spectrometry and energy dispersive spectrometry. This study shows that most of whitewares excavated from the kiln site are similar in chemistry to each other regardless of their excavated positions and that the their bodies were not made of feldspar minerals. However, the whiteware from sedimentation 1 of waste articles shows mineralogical characters different from those of other sites. This result is in accordance with the report that the whitewares from sedimentation 1 of waste articles have characters different from other sites. The whiteware glaze was produced from raw minerals of both lime and alkali-lime system resulting in wide variation in chemical composition.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the adsorption potential of red mud for fluoride removal. Different operation parameters such as the effect of contact time, initial concentration, pH, competing anions, seawater, adsorbent dose amount, and adsorbent mixture were studied. Nearly 3 hr was required to reach sorption equilibrium. Equilibrium sorption data were described well by Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity of red mud was 5.28 mg/g. The fluoride adsorption at pH 3 was higher than in the pH range 5-9. The presence of anions such as sulfate, nitrate, phosphate, and bicarbonate had no significant effect on fluoride adsorption onto red mud. The fluoride removal by red mud was greater in seawater than deionized water, resulting from the presence of calcium and magnesium ion in seawater. The use of red mud alone was more effective for the removal of fluoride than mixing red mud with other industrial waste such as oyster shells, lime stone, and steel slag. This study showed that red mud has a potential application in the remediation of fluoride contaminated soil and groundwater.

  • Corrosion of steel reinforcement is the most important mode of concrete structures damages. It strongly depends on the composition and physicochemical properties of the cementitious medium. The use of waste materials as lightweight aggregates in concrete is environmentally recommended in polluted environments such as marine and/or industrial atmospheres in order to reduce its porosity and ensure the requested protection of reinforcing steel. The present study investigated the effect of waste cork addition on corrosion resistance of steel rebar in mortar specimen prepared in the laboratory. The main objective of this study was to improve the corrosion resistance of reinforcing steel. Another objective of this study was to valorize this ecological product and preserve the environment. Results obtained from various electrochemical tests indicated that the presence of a fine cork powder substantially improved the corrosion resistance of steel in the mortar contaminated by chloride ions. This improvement was reflected by a notable decrease in corrosion current density and a shift of corrosion potential of the steel towards more noble values. Moreover, the presence of a fine cork powder in the mortar had no adverse effect on its mechanical properties.

  • The major problem of a coal combustion-based power plant is that it creates large quantity of solid wastes. So, to achieve the gainful use of waste materials and to avoid other environmental problems, this study was undertaken. The quantity of coal ash by-products, particularly coal fly ash and coal bottom ash has been increasing from the coal power plants around the world. The other objective of this study was to explore the possibility of utilization of coal ash in the production of ash bricks. In 15 different mixes, Mix Designation M-1 to M-15, the varying percentages of lime and gypsum were used and sand was replaced with coal bottom ash. Further, it has been noticed that the water absorption and compressive strength of mix M-15 is 13.36% and 7.85 MPa which is better than the conventional bricks. The test results of this investigation show that the prism strength of coal ash masonry prisms was more than that of the conventional bricks.

  • In tropical regions, lateritic soil is frequently used in road embankment. However, it is one of the sources of road failure owing to its low strength. Generally, cement and lime are used as stabilizers for lateritic soil, but they are not environmentally friendly. Some studies try to use eggshells, for they are food waste and share the same chemical composition as lime. Previous researchs have shown that eggshell powder could enhance the strength of lateritic soil. This research investigated the effect of particle size of the eggshell powder and the effect of the protein-membrane presence in the eggshell on stabilizing capacity of soil. Through laboratory tests, unconfined compressive strength was examined for various particle sizes. The particle size of eggshell powder ranging between 150 ㎛ and 88 ㎛ was appropriate size that made an excellent stabilizer at 3% concentration. On the other hand, the protein-membrane reduced the stabilizing ability of the eggshell powder when the content of eggshell powder is less than 4% in soil. Numerical analysis of road embankment was performed based on the results obtained in the laboratory tests. It is shown that the eggshell powder has improved the stability of the sub-base of the road embankment.

  • The goal of this study was to find an application method of the waste soda-lime glass as the feed material for foamed glass by foaming of hydrated waste glass. The proper conditions for the foaming of hydrated waste glass were found to be: temperature of $92.5^{\circ}C$; reaction time of 10~20 min; particle size of -325 mesh as the unhydrated glass starting materials; and graphite weight to the hydrated glass ratio of 0.003 as the foaming agent. The resulting formed glass made from hydrated mixed waste glass under above mentioned conditions had the characteristics of density less than $0.2g/cm^3$ and thermal conductivity of $0.05kcal/mh^{\circ}C$.

  • Trichloroethylene(TCE) is the organic compound which is used variously at the industrial areas. It contaminates soils and groundwater by leaked storage tank, careless treatment in field and the effluent from waste landfills. This study was carried out to identify adsorptive behavior of TCE by soil. Batch experiments were conducted at different soil-organic matter content and lime treatment to determine Freundlich isothermal adsorption equation constant, k and n, for TCE. Sewage sludge cake was applied to make different soil-organic matter content with the level of Oton/ha(S1), 50ton/ha(S2), 100ton/ha(S3). Lime(calcium hydroxide) was treated with the level of 2ton/ha, 4ton/ha, 6ton/ha, 10ton/ha. Freundlich isothermal adsorption equations obtained from experiment with sewage sludge cake were as follows (on condition that the level of TCE applied to soil ranged from 0.5ng/g soil to 2.5 ng/g soil.) : S1 :x/m = 0.393 $C^2$, S2 : x/m = 0.436 $C^2$, S3 : x/m = 0.636 $C^2$Value of k was increased in higher order of 51, 52, 53 with increased level of sewage sludge cake application. From this results, soil which was applied higher level of sewage sludge cake had a good ability on TCE adsorption. With increased the level of lime application, pH of the soil was increased and the ability of the soil in TCE adsorption was decreased.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effect of several improvers such as triple super phosphate, slaked lime, wollastonite and gypsum for reducing Cd content in brown rice. Several improvers were applied to two different types of soils which are contaminated with copper-zinc mine wasted and sludge.(Soil I contained Cd : 7.88, Cu : 57.9, Zn : 175.0 ppm, Soil II contained Cd : 3.95, Cu : 30.2, Zn :124.0 ppm) In general, effects of improvers on reducing content of Cd, Cu and Zn in brown rice were greater in soil I than soil II. In soil I, the Cd content of brown rice was reduced to 0.4ppm below by application of triple superphosphate, fused phosphate, slaked lime and gypsum, 98, 225, 190 and 276Kg/10a, respectively. Triple superphosphate was more effective than fused phosphate in reducing uptake of Cd, Cu and Zn by applying them as an equal amount of phosphorous, also to equal alkalinity, slaked lime had the highest effect. Negatively linear effect was found between soil pH and Cd and Zn content in brown rice. As to above results, it was no doubt that triple superphosphate, fused phosphate and slaked lime would be applied to reduced heavy metals in brown rice. The slaked lime, triple super phosphate and fused phosphate were available to reduce uptake of Cd, Cu and Zn by rice plant grown in the soil contaminated with mine waste and sludge.

  • On the international provision on prohibition of ocean dumping of waste, tap water sludge has been buried or recycled on th low value added product as landfill. Due to the tap water sludge having high inorganic content, differing from the sewage sludge, it is possible to use as a usable resource by suitable process. We have studied on hydro thermal processing of tap water sludge with phosphoric acid and finally synthesize a artificial zeolite having a deodorization property. To use it as a building material, it has to be solidification. This study is on the properties of artificial zeolite synthsized and solidification properties by various types of solidifier. It is showed that the slaked lime is the best on setting property and its optimum content is 30-60 weight proportion. Solid by solidified by slaked lime has low strength and excellent deodorization performance, so it is possible to use as a functional pannel as gypsum board.
