메탄생산 향상을 위한 음폐수와 미세조류의 혐기성 통합소화 (Anaerobic co-digestion of food waste leachate with microalgae for improvement of methane production)

  • Food waste leachate (FWL) is a serious pollutant waste coming from the food waste recycling facilities in Korea. FWL has a high organic matter content and high COD to nitrogen (COD/N) ratio, which can disturb efficient methane production in the anaerobic digestion of FWL. In the present study a microalga, Clorella vulgaris (C.V), was used as co-substrate for the FWL anaerobic digestion in order to supply nutrients, decrease the COD/N ratio and increase its methane yield. Different co-digestion mixtures (COD/N ratios) were studied by using biochemical methane potential test and modified Gompertz equation for kinetic study. Mixed substrate of FWL and C. vulgaris in the co-digestion clearly showed more the biomethane yield than the sole substrates. The maximum methane production, 827.7 mL-$CH_4$/g-VS added, was obtained for COD/N ratio of 24/1, whereas the highest improvement of methane yield was found for COD/N ratio of 15/1.

쓰레기 매립지 침출수 정화를 위한 갈대 선발 (A Selection of Phragmites australis for Purification of Waste Landfill Leachate)

  • We investigated the ecological characteristics of reed populations growing in Korea and tried to select reed populations showing better growth patterns in waste landfill leachate. To examine the growth characteristics, 14 reed populations from various habitats were collected. Four reed populations were from inland reclaimed habitats, 4 reed populations from brackish or salt marsh habitats, and 6 reed populations from fresh water habitats. Total plant biomass after the treatment with landfill leachate showed that Daebudo and Nanjido reed populations had the higher biomass with 3755 g DW/pot and 3305 g DW/pot, respectively. Reed populations being sampled from the higher salinity and landfill habitats had relatively higher total biomass than that of other reed populations. Especially reed populations from landfill habitats showed higher biomass. Reed populations from Songjiho and Daebudo, which were believed to have tolerance to salt stress, also showed good growth patterns. Population from the fresh water habitats exhibited relatively lower tolerance to leachate treatment compared to others. From the results, we could conclude that reed populations from Nanjido and Daebudo with higher biomass and better salt tolerance were able to good candidates for purification of waste landfill leachate.

  • For the purpose of saving the waste disposal cost a self-governing community on the whole reclamates the wetland and uses it as a landfill site. During the operation period of site, the environmental impact by the leachate is usually neglected. Therefore, to predict the environmental impact and dispersion of leachate, the wetland adjacent to the South Han River in Chungju is selected as a site of case study. The main content of this article is to apply the simulation model CONMIG to leachate transfer in the ground water and to derive the impact by the leachate. A kind of non-reacting conservative material, chloride ion is used as a tracer to quantify impacts by the leachate.

Remediation capabilities of pilot-scale wetlands planted with Typha aungstifolia and Acorus calamus to treat landfill leachate

  • Improper management and unsanitary approaches are implemented in disposal of leachate, which has resulted in groundwater pollution at village Uruli Devachi, Pune, India. Various physico-chemical treatment methods are commercially available for leachate treatment. However, the application of biological methods viz. phytoremediation to the municipal solid waste landfill leachate has been limited. We report the remediation ability of Typha aungstifolia and Acrorus calamus that is capable of reducing hazardous constituents from the landfill leachate. After 96 h of hydraulic retention time (HRT), it was observed that T. aungstifolia-treated sample showed high reduction potential in reducing biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, hardness, total dissolved solids, Na, Mg, Ca and Ni whereas A. calamus showed greater reduction capacity for alkalinity, Cl, Cu, Zn and Cr. Furthermore, it was also observed that T. aungstifolia withstood longer HRT than A. calamus. In situ application of T. aungstifolia and A. calamus for remediation of landfill leachate carries a tremendous potential that needs to be further explored.

  • Train of chemical and biological processes was investigated to treat leachate from industrial waste landfill. Organics and nitrogen concentrations of landfill leachate studied in this research were high and their BOD/COD ratio was 0.3. Biological process should be combined with chemical process for optimum treatment of leachate. PAC(Polyaluminium chloride) was the best coagulant among three chemicals tested, and the optimum condition of PAC coagulation was pH 6 and 1,250 mg/L of dosage. When SBR was operated for simultaneous removal of organics and nitrogen, removal efficiency of COD and T-N reached over $82\%,\;71\%,$ respectively and time distribution of 2/4/2/1 was most effective for one cycle of anoxic/aerobic/anoxic/aerobic.

수치모의를 통한 지하 LPG 저장시설에 인접한 폐기물매립지에서의 침출수이동 예측 및 제어공법 검토 (Prediction of Leachate Migration from Waste Disposal Site to Underground LPG Storage Facility and Review of Contamination Control Method by Numerical Simulations)

  • 지하 LPG 저장시설과 같은 지하수에 의존하는 시설물 인접지역에 폐기물매립장이 설치될 경우, 침출수 누출로 인한 지하수오염 예측 및 오염방지 대책수립이 요구되고, 이를 위한 지하수유동 및 용질 이동(Mass Transport) 해석을 실시하게 된다. 본 연구에서는 현재 U 지역 석유화학공단내에서 발생된 상기 와 같은 내용의 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 해석학적 해석 및 수치해석에 의한 침출수이동 예측을 실시하였으며 침출수제어 공법을 검토하였다. 해석학적 해석은 입력요소를 이송(Advenction)요인과 분산 (Dispersion)요인으로 구분하여, Peclet 수로 부터 각 요인의 침출수이동에 미치는 영향을 분석 검토하였으며, 보존성용질 이송확산 방정식으로부터 입력요소 변화율과 침출수이동속도 변화율의 관계를 함수식으로 도출하여, 입력요소 변화에 따른 침출수 이동속도 변화를 간단히 예측할 수 있었다. 수치해석은 지하수유동 및 용질이동 해석용 FEM 프로그램인 AQUA2D를 이용하여 침출수이동 예측을 위한 수치모의를 실시하였다. 침출수제어공법 검토를 위해서 3D 불연속체모형을 모의하고 모의된 모형을 대상으로 지하수유동해석을 실시하여 암반내 열극(Fracture)의 상호 연결성 분석을 통한 수벽(Water Curtain) 시스템의 타당성을 분석하였다. 해석학적 해석 및 수치모의 결과, 폐기물매립장으로 부터 지하 LPG 저장기지로 침출수가 30년 이내로 유입되는 것으로 예측되었으며, 이를 방지하기 위한 침출수 제어공법으로는 수직수벽 시스템이 효율적인 것으로 예측되었다.

  • 본 논문은 폐기물의 하중과 침출수위의 변화를 고려할 수 있는 컴퓨터 프로그램 CONSOL을 이용하여 폐기물 매립이 진행되는 동안과 이후의 해안 폐기물 매립장의 압밀침하량을 분석하였다. 또한, 이들 변화된 기초점토지반 강도특성하에서 매립지 기초지반을 포함한 제체사면의 안정성 해석을 수행하였으며, 현장 침하계측자료와 본 논문의 이론적 침하량을 비교 검토하였다. 그 결과, 단계별 폐기물 매립이 실시됨에도 침출수위가 함께 상승할 경우 점토지반의 강도를 향상시키는 유효응력 증가가 거의 없어 매립높이가 증가할수록 안정성이 확보되기 어려운 것으로 나타났으며, 그 결과 매립경사구배를 낮추거나 배수공법에 의한 침출수위를 절감시키는 등의 보완 작업이 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 압밀해석으로부터 구한 침하량은 실측침하량 자료와 비교적 잘 일치하였다.

  • 쓰레기 매립지 침출수의 중금속과 유해성분을 자작 나무와 이태리포플러 묘목이 얼마나 흡수, 제거하는 지를 알아보기 위해서 침출수 원액, 50% 침출수, 25% 침출수 그리고 대조구 등 4개의 처리로 나누어서 관수하였다. 실험이 끝난 후에 뿌리, 줄기, 잎을 분쇄기로 분쇄하고 그 함량을 Inductively Coupled Plasma emission spectrometer(ICP)로 조사하였다. 위에서 살펴본 것과 같이 이태리 포플러와 자작나무 모두 쓰레기 매립지 침출수의 유해 중금속을 흡수할 수 있는 능력이 있어 매립지나 황폐지 같은 지역의 빠른 조림을 위해서 활용이 기대되는 수종임을 알 수 있다. 특히 토양의 알루미늄(AA),크롬(Cr), 철(Fe) 등의 오염이 문제가 되는 지역에 이들 수종을 식재하게 되면 뿌리를 통해서 이들 원소를 흡착, 흡수 할 수 있는 효과를 올릴 수 있다.

  • Objectives of this research were to reclaim the coal mine overburdens using the lime waste cake from the soda ash production by stabilizing the overburden slopes, introducing neutralizing the AMD from runoff and leachate in an attempt find the sink to dispose the lime wastes and alleviate the environmental problems caused by the closed coal mines. The pH changes of the runoff and leachate collected in the tanks at the end of the experimental plots, averaged over measurements from April to August, indicated that the runoff pH of the coal overburden was 4.3 but increased significantly to the ranges of 6.7 to 7.1 with treatments of tile calcites and lime wastes. This might be related with the decreases in Fe concentrations in the runoff and leachate from the coal overburdens. The Fe concentrations in tile runoff seemed to increase with the amounts of precipitation. Results demonstrated that the amounts of lime wastes at 25% of the lime requirement were sufficient for neutralizing the acidic coal overburden. Either layering between the coal waste and topsoil or mixing with coal overburdens could be adopted as the lime waste treatment method. The lime wastes from the soda ash production might have a potential to be recycled for the reclamation of the abandoned coal mines to alleviate the environmental problems associated with coal mine waste.

Applying methane and carbon flow balances for determination of first-order landfill gas model parameters

  • Landfill gas (LFG) emissions from a given amount of landfill waste depend on the carbon flows in the waste. The objective of this study was to more accurately estimate the first-order decay parameters through methane (CH4) and carbon flow balances based on the analysis of a full-scale landfill with long-term data and detailed field records on LFG and leachate. The carbon storage factor for the case-study landfill was 0.055 g-degradable organic carbon (DOC) stored per g-wet waste and the amounts of DOC lost with the leachate were less than 1.3%. The appropriate CH4 generation rate constant (k) for bulk waste was 0.24 y-1. The the CH4 generation potential (L0) values ranged 33.7-46.7 m3-CH4 Mg-1, based on the fraction of DOC that can decompose (DOCf) value of 0.40. Results show that CH4 and carbon flow balance methods can be used to estimate model parameters appropriately and to predict long-term carbon emissions from landfills.
