Application of food waste leachate to a municipal solid waste incinerator for reduction of NOx emission and ammonia water consumption

  • This study investigates the possibility of applying food waste leachate to a municipal solid waste incinerator in order to effectively dispose of the material and to reduce the environmental impact. The spray positions and the quantity of the food waste leachate in municipal solid waste incinerator were adjusted to examine the stability of the process and the environmental effect. The rear of the first combustion chamber was found to be the desirable location for an environmental perspective in this study. At a food waste leachate injection rate of $2m^3/h$, the concentration of the emitted NOx decreased from 130 ppm to 40 ppm. The consumption of ammonia water was reduced by about 36% after adding the food waste leachate. The inclusion of the food waste leachate to the municipal incinerator also increased the amount of steam that was produced. The results of this research indicated that a positive outcome can be expected in terms of diversifying the treatment options for food waste leachate. The results also provide guidance for institutional framework to manage the incineration of the food waste leachate.

The Effects of Waste Leachate on the Eco-Physiological Characteristics of Populus euramericana

  • Populus euramericana has been identified as a possible species for use for phytoremediation of landfills. To identify the effects of waste leachate on the growth and physiological characteristics of Populus euramericana. four different treatments were applied to Populus euramericana seedlings: leachate solution (100% leachate). 25% dilution (75% leachate: 25% water. v/v), 50% dilution (50% leachate: 50% water. v/v) and control (100% tab water) were applied to Populus euramericana. Treatment with waste leachate significantly stimulated Populus euramericana height. diameter at root collar and biomass production relative to the water control. Chlorophyll contents. photosynthesis and transpiration of leachate irrigated-trees were significantly higher than those of water control. These results suggested that poplar could be a suitable species for phytoremediation in landfills because these species showed good growth performance and were capable of taking up waste leachate.

  • 침출수의 수량 및 수질변화를 평가하기 위하여 세 종류(소각재 100%, 소각재 70%+일반생활폐기물 30%, 생활폐기물 100%)의 모형매립조를 실제 기상조건하에서 운영하였다. 실험결과, 누적 침출수 발생률이 모형매립조 A와 B가 모형매립조 C보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 모형매립조 A는 pH가 pH 9~11의 범위였으나 시간이 경과하면서 중성으로 점차 변하였다. 염소이온은 소각재를 매립한 모형매립조 A와 B가 높은 것으로 나타났으나 모형매립조 C의 경우 낮게 나타났다. 생활폐기물을 충전한 모형매립조 C의 경우 침출수내의 유기물 농도가 다른 모형매립조보다 높게 나타났다.

Potential use of waste rubber shreds in drainage layer of landfills - An experimental study

  • Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of waste rubber shreds in leachate collection layer of engineered landfills. The study found that waste rubber shreds layer in combination with a gravel layer can be of potential use in landfill drainage system. To study the performance, conventional gravel along with waste rubber shreds were used in different combinations (with total layer thickness = 500 mm) as leachate collection media. For the laboratory study poly vinyl chloride (PVC) pipes were used. The size range of waste rubber shreds used were 25 mm to 75 mm in length and width = 10 to 20 mm. The gravel size used in the leachate collection media is 10 mm to 20 mm size. Performance study of 7 Test Cols. with different combinations of waste rubber shreds and gravel bed thickness were studied to find out the best combination. The study found that the Test Col.-3 having waste rubber shreds thickness = 200 mm and gravel layer thickness = 300 mm gave the best results in terms of percentage removal in various physicochemical parameters present in the leachate. Further to find the best size rubber shreds three more Test Cols - 8, 9 and 10 were constructed having the rubber shreds and gravel layer ratio same as that of Test Col.-3 but having rubber shreds width = 10 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm respectively. Based on the results obtained using Test Cols. 8, 9 and 10 the study found that smaller size rubber shreds gave bests results in terms of improvement in various leachate parameters.

음폐수 공공하수처리시설 연계처리 타당성 평가 - P시 사례 - (Feasibility Study on the Treatment of Food Waste Leachate in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facility - Case of P city -)

  • P시에서는 음폐수 처리를 위해 병합처리시설을 설치하였으나, 음폐수 발생량 대비 처리용량이 부족한 실정이다. 또한 병합처리시설 방류수는 인근 바다로 직방류 되고 있어 환경적 문제가 발생할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 P하수처리장을 대상으로 P시 발생 음폐수 처리 초과 분량 및 병합처리시설 방류수 연계처리 가능성을 검토하였다. 예상 가능한 4개의 시나리오를 세운 후, 각각의 최대 음폐수 및 병합처리시설 방류수 허용 투입량을 산정 하고, 투입 후 P하수처리장 유입수 성상 변화및 시나리오별 예상 처리비용을 비교 하였다. 검토된 모든 시나리오에서 환경부의 음폐수 병합처리 업무지침을 준수하면서 음폐수 및 병합처리시설 방류수 대부분을 P하수처리장에 연계 처리 가능하며 하수처리장 부하에도 큰 영향을 주지 않을 것으로 산정 되었다.

해성점토의 투수성에 대한 폐기물 침출수의 영향 (Effects of Waste Leachate on Permeability of Marine Clay)

  • 폐기물의 침출수가 해성점토의 투수성에 미치는 영향에 대해서 연구하기 위하여 실내에서 강성벽의 정수위투수시험을 시행하였다. 본 연구에서 이용한 해성점토와 침출수는 김포 폐기물 매립장에서 채취하였으며 공시체에 가한 동수경사는 비교적 큰 값인 37.5~225 정도이었다. 연구결과 침출수의 농도가 클수록 그리고 동수경사가 작을수록 침출수에 대한 해성점토의 투수계수는 증가한다. 또한 침출수와 혼합시킨 해성점토의 액성한계와 소성지수는 침출누의 농도가 증가할수록 감소한다.

침출수 특성 분석을 통한 사용종료 비위생매립지 안정화 평가 - 살미매립지 사례연구 - (Assessment on Stabilization of Open-dumping Landfill Based on Leachate - A Case Study of Salmi Landfill -)

  • To utilize a closed municipal solid waste landfill site in environmentally secure conditions, it is necessary to verify the stabilization level of landfill leachate. To assess leachate stabilization of an open-dumping municipal solid waste landfill site (Salmi Landfill) which is located at the vicinity of Chungju Reservoir which flows into Paldang Reservoir utilized as Seoul Metropolitan water supplies, the landfill history and surrounding characteristics of the landfill site were surveyed. In this investigation, waste, leachate, groundwater and surfacewater samples from this landfill were physically and chemically analyzed, and the analysis results were evaluated by 'The Criteria of Landfill Waste Stabilization (CLWS)', 'Discharge Criteria of Landfill Leachate', 'The Criteria of Domestic Use in Groundwater Quality', and 'The Criteria of Domestic Use in Surfacewater Quality' that promulgated by Korean Ministry of Environment. From the analysis results on the Salmi open-dumping landfill, C/N ratio was 18.9 and $BOD/COD_{Cr}$ ratios in leachate were higher than 1/10. Based on the CLWS, this results seemed to imply that the process of leachate stabilization at this landfill was still proceeding.

  • In recent years there has been a steady increase in geoenvironmental engineering projects where geotechnical engineering has been combined with environmental concerns. Many of these projects involve some investigation on contaminant and leachate flume in the ground and landfill. In this study, investigation on leachate around the waste landfill was carried out to detect the leaked and contaminated area. Many techniques such as geophysical, drilling and sampling method were applied. As a result of this study, the concentration of leachate and the point of leachate leaking around landfill were found out, and countermeasures for cut-off of leachate flow from landfill were investigated.

생활(生活)쓰레기 매립지(埋立地) 침출수(浸出水)가 이태리 포플러와 자작나무 묘목(苗木)에 미치는 영향(影響)(II) (Effects of Waste Leachate Irrigation on Populus euramericana and Betula platyphylla var. japonica Seedlings(II))

  • 이 연구는 대표적인 속성수인 이태리 포플러와 자작나무가 쓰레기 매립지주변의 조림 수종으로서 적당한가를 평가하기 위해서 수행되었다. 두 수종 묘목에 대한 침출수 관수 효과를 알아보기 위해서 침출수 원액, 50% 침출수, 25% 침출수 그리고 대조구(수도물) 등 4가지 침출수로 다르게 희석하여 약 3개월 정도 관수했다. 이태리 포플러와 자작나무 공통적으로 묘고, 근원경, 물질생산량 모두 침출수 원액을 관수한 처리구가 다른 처리구보다 좋았다. 침출수 원액으로 관수한 묘목의 엽록소 지수, 광합성능력, 증산량이 수도물로 관수한 대조구보다 모두 유의하게 높음을 보여주었다. 이는 비록 3개월이라는 짧은 기간의 결과이긴 하지만, 이들 두 수종은 매립지 주변의 조림, 복구를 위해서 좋은 추천 수종임을 보여주고 있다.
