  • Waste Isolation Pilot Plant repository releases are evaluated through the application of modified parameters to simulate accelerated creep closure, include capillary pressure effects on relative permeability, and increase brine and gas saturation in the operations and experimental (OPS/EXP) areas. The modifications to the repository model result in increased pressures and decreased brine saturations in waste areas and increased pressures and brine saturations in the OPS/EXP areas. Brine flows up the borehole during a hypothetical drilling intrusion are nearly identical and brine flows up the shaft are decreased. The modified parameters essentially halt the flow of gas from the southern waste areas to the northern nonwaste areas, except as transported through the marker beds and anhydrite layers. The combination of slightly increased waste region pressures and very slightly decreased brine saturations result in a modest increase in spallings and no significant effect on direct brine releases, with total releases from the Culebra and cutting and caving releases unaffected. Overall, the effects on total high-probability mean releases from the repository are insignificant, with total low-probability mean releases minimally increased. It is concluded that the modified OPS/EXP area parameters have an insignificant effect on the prediction of total releases.

  • Emission of hazardous and volatile organic chemicals from solid waste landfill site was become to important issue because of environmental pollution and health risk by such chemicals. Laboratory batch and continuous experiments were conducted respectively to elucidate isothermal sorption behaviors and transport phenomena(by gas through unsaturated solid waste layer) in wet solid waste-gas system. Source separated and size reduced refuse(bulky waste) and incinerated ash were used after controlling water content, and trichloroethylene(TCE) was chosen among many such chemicals because of it's generality among those man-created pollutants. Isothermal TCE sorption equilibria wet solid waste-gas system can be described in linear equation and partition coefficient in this system can be estimated approximately by the simple equation derived from schematic structure of the system. Transport equation modified by instantaneous equilibrium sorption fraction and kinetic sorption rate(overall mass transfer capacity coefficient) simulated well the column experiment results.

  • In order to make use of finished municipal landfill as a construction site, it is necessary to consider environmental and geotechnical aspects for the ground improvement and application of waste landfill. In environmental aspect, methods for management of landfill gas and leachate have to be established, and in geotechnical aspect, it is necessary to investigate available method for constructing structure foundation. In this study, the finished landfill was selected for pilot test. Investigation about the environmental characteristics of the waste landfill was performed to establish the methods far management of landfill gas according to monitoring the gas quantity and to investigate economical efficiency according to utilizing landfill gas. Investigation about cases of utilizing the waste landfill in Korea and abroad as construction site was performed and pilot tests were performed to analyze the improvement effects of methods such as dynamic compaction method and PG pile method available to waste landfill. The results of this study showed that economical profits could be gained by utilizing landfill gas and improved waste landfill, besides, dynamic compaction method was effective in case of improvement depth being shallow, and PG pile method was effective in case of improvement depth being deep.

  • The bed combustion in an incinerator interacts with the gas flow region through heat and mass transfer. Combined bed combustion and gas flow simulations are performed to investigate this coupled interaction for various operating conditions and furnace configurations. Radiation onto the bed from the furnace is interrelated with the combustion characteristics in the bed, and is also affected by the flow pattern in the gas flow region. Since the contribution of gaseous emission to the total radiation is significant, an adequate flow pattern in a well-designed furnace shape would lead to an increased heat influx on the bed, especially in the early stage of the waste combustion. Advancing the initiation point of the waste combustion can also reduce the size of the lower gas temperature region above the bed, which can be achieved by controlling operating conditions such as the waste feeding rate, the bed height and the primary air flow distribution.

  • Classical membrane processes like microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) are being applied in the last years more frequently in environmental and effluent process problems. Newer technologies and developments like pervaporation (PV) and gas sepaxation (GS) recently found commercial applications in the treatment of waste waters and gas streams. The incentive here is either the clean-up from organic components to comply with federal emission regulations or the recovery of the organics for economical reasons. Processes still in their development stage are combinations of chemical reactions with membrane processes to separate and treat $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ laden waste gas streams in the clean-up of stack-gases. In this paper we will first give a short overview of the more recent developments in MF, UF and RO. This is followed by a closer look on newer technologies applied in environmental problems. The applications looked at are the recovery of organic components from solvent laden gas streams and the separation of organic volatiles from aqueous waste waters via pervaporation. Technical solutions, the advantages and disadvantages of the processes and. where possible, cost estimations will be presented.

  • The leachate recirculation anaerobic digestion system has the advantage of stable methane gas generation compared with existing one phase systems. In this study, an anaerobic digestion system fed with source separated food waste from school cafeteria was studied with different food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratios (8:2, 3:7, 2:8). From this study, leachate recirculation anaerobic reactor with food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratio of 2:8 that is 9 gVS/L of OLR(Organic Loading Rate) had the highest gas production. Also this anaerobic reactor showed daily decrease of H2S and NH3 contents in produced gas. Average biogas yield was 1.395 m3 Biogas/kg VS added. Other anaerobic reactors with food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratio of 8:2 and 3:7 stopped methane gas production.

  • The interest on the recovery of thermal energy using the waste has been rising to solve the problems of continuous increase of waste generation and the depletion of the fossil fuel recently. The incineration has been used most popularly as a treatment process of the waste for the energy recovery. However, it is expected that incineration and design cost will increase in the treatment of air contaminant emitted from incinerator. This research has simulated the actual incinerator and the flue gas treatment system using the Aspen plus which is the software to simulate the chemical process. The incineration process is composed of the 1st and 2nd combustor to burn the waste, SNCR process to reduce the $NO_x$ using the urea, and the steam generation process to save the energy during incineration. The $Ca(OH)_2$ slurry was used as an acid gas (HCl, $SO_2$) treatment materials and the removal efficiency for the products from the neutralization of acid gas in SDA and combustion ash was simulated at the bag filter. The simulation result has been corresponded with the treatment efficiency of emitted gas from the actual industrial waste incinerator and it is presumed to be used to forecast the efficiencies of flue gas treatment system in the future.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the waste recycling possibility, practicability, economic efficiency and acid gas sorbent use of the hard-shelled mussel. This study is to investigate the hydration/calcination reaction and fixed bed reactor. The physical-chemical characteristics of the hard-shelled mussel were analyzed by ICP SEM-EDX, BET and pore volume. Thus, the results could be summarized as follows; Hard-shelled mussel can be used as iron-manufacture and chemical sorbents considering more than 53.7% of the mussel is lime content. The SO$_2$removal efficiency of the hard-shelled mussel after calcined hydration increased thirty times as a result of the higher pore size, specific surface area and pore volume. Also, the CaO content, pore volume, pore size distribution and specific surface area greatly influenced the SO$_2$ and NOx removal reactivity. The optimum particle diameter average of hard-shelled mussel was $\pm$100 mesh, which was applied to the sorbent on the medium/small scale waste incinerator and flue gas desulfurization processes.
