  • Populus euramericana has been identified as a possible species for use for phytoremediation of landfills. To identify the effects of waste leachate on the growth and physiological characteristics of Populus euramericana. four different treatments were applied to Populus euramericana seedlings: leachate solution (100% leachate). 25% dilution (75% leachate: 25% water. v/v), 50% dilution (50% leachate: 50% water. v/v) and control (100% tab water) were applied to Populus euramericana. Treatment with waste leachate significantly stimulated Populus euramericana height. diameter at root collar and biomass production relative to the water control. Chlorophyll contents. photosynthesis and transpiration of leachate irrigated-trees were significantly higher than those of water control. These results suggested that poplar could be a suitable species for phytoremediation in landfills because these species showed good growth performance and were capable of taking up waste leachate.

  • A pilot study was performed at the experimental field of Konkuk University in Seoul, to examine the waste water treatment using constructed wetland and pond system. The effluent of the wetland system in winter often exceeded effluent water quality standards for sewage treatment plant, therefore, pond system could be applied to additional system. As a result, removal rate of $BOD_{5}$, SS was 84.4%, 81.5% and effluent concentration was 4.6mg/L and 5.0mg/L respectively, when surface water of pond system was discharged in March. So we concluded that pond system stored wetland effluent in winter and discharged surface water of pond system in March, so met water quality standard.

  • Since the beginning of the water shortage by disasters such as global warming, environmental pollution, and drought, development of original technology and studies have been undergone to increase availability of water resources. Among them the water treatment separation membrane technology is an environmentally friendly process that does not use chemicals and shows better water quality improvement effect than conventional physicochemical and biological processes. The water treatment membrane can be applied to various fields such as waste water treatment, water purification treatment, seawater desalination, ion exchange process, ultrapure water production, organic solvent separation and water treatment technology, and it tends to expand the range of application. In the core technology of water treatment membrane, researches are being actively carried out to develop a separation membrane of better performance by controlling the pore size to adjust the separation performance. In this review, we summarized the frequency of announcement by country and organization through the technological competitiveness evaluation of patents and papers of the water separation membrane. Also, we evaluated the results from membrane research for waste water treatment, water purification treatment, seawater desalination, ion exchange process and present the future direction of research.

  • Porous materials were manufactured by hydrothermal treatment of waste bottle glass without foam agent. Factorial design was applied to analyze data by statistical methods and deal with the important factors for a process. The largest effect for porosity was for temperature of hydrothermal treatment. Amount of water and temperature-water interaction appeared to have little effect. The particle size of raw material was also identified as a major factor by one-way ANOVA and the porosity decreased as the size increased. The sintering temperature was not statistically significant for the porosity but was significant for the pore size. The porous material had compressive strength and thermal conductivity comparing with those of ALC (autoclaved lightweight concrete), although it has higher porosity than for ALC.

  • The efficiency of biological hydrolysis at $80^{\circ}C$ on municipal solid waste mixed with anaerobic digestion sludge was investigated in 100L batch reactors. The hydrolysis effect was observed within a day, when the hydrolysis reactor used for a pre-treatment reactor for methanogenesis, and the effect was observed during two days, When the reactor used for post-treatment reactor. For both configurations, methane production rate decreased, when hydrolysis was carried out more than a day. Gaseous ammonia in the hydrolysis reactors was successtully removed by the ammonia stripping system. Microbial diversity analysis on the hydrolysis reactors indicated dependency of microbial diversity on the configuration of the hydrolysis reactors. Carbohydrate and lactate degrading microbes dominated in the hydrolysis reactor, when the hydrolysis reactor used for a pre-treatment reactor for methanogenesis, while protein degrading microbes dominated in the post-treatment reactor.

  • Recently, due to the primary emphasis of environmental problem, the proper selection of the membrane systems necessary for waste water treatment has been one of the critical issues in the industrial sector. This paper shows how an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) model can be used for assessing the performance of selected membrane systems: ultrafiltration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and electrodialysis essential for waste water treatments. The final results show that ultrafiltration is the most attractive membrane system to use in a water recycling system, followed by microfiltration, reverse osmosis and electrodialysis. This is consistent with the information that we found with respect to the elements that were taken into consideration. Sensitivity analysis is also provided here.

  • In China, serious environmental problems are induced by the extremely soft construction waste slurries in many urban areas, and there is no appropriate method to treat it presently. In this paper, four model tests were conducted to investigate the efficiency of waste slurry treatment by combining three conditioning agents which can change characteristics of the slurries with a traditional vacuum preloading method. The tests of size analysis of particle aggregate were conducted to investigate the influence of different conditioning agents on the size distributions of particle aggregate. During the model test, the discharged water volumes were monitored. The pore-size distribution and void ratio of the waste slurries after the vacuum preloading were measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). It is found that 1) During the natural precipitation, volume of water out of the organic agent is higher than that of the mixed agent, but it is smaller than that of the mixed agent in the vacuum preloading stage; 2) the mixed agent has a higher total volume of water out than the organic agent and the inorganic agent after test, while the organic agent and the inorganic agent have little difference with respect to the drainage effect. The results demonstrate that the combination of mixed conditioning agent and vacuum preloading for the solid-liquid separation in waste slurry has a satisfactory effect and can be applied in engineering practice.

  • Since 2005, food waste has been separately collected and recycled to animal feed or aerobic compost in South Korea. However, the conventional recycling methods discharge process wastewater, which contain pollutant equivalent to more than 50% of food waste. Therefore, anaerobic digestion is considered as an alternative recycling method of food waste to reduce pollutant and recover renewable energy. Recent studies showed that hydrogen can be produced at acidogenic stage in two-stage anaerobic digestion. In this study, the authors investigated the effects of pretreatment time and pH low set value on continuous mesophilic hydrogen fermentation of food waste. Food waste was successfully converted to $H_2$ when heat-treated at $70^{\circ}C$ for 60 min, which was milder than previous studies using pH 12 for 1 day or $90^{\circ}C$. Organic acid production dropped operational pH below 5.0 and caused a metabolic shift from $H_2/butyrate$ fermentation to lactate fermentation. Therefore, alkaline addition for operational pH at or over 5.0 was necessary. At pH 5.3, the result showed that the maximum hydrogen productivity and yield of 1.32 $m^3/m^3$.d and 0.71 mol/mol $carbohydrate_{added}$. Hydrogen production from food waste would be an effective technology for resource recovery as well as waste treatment.

  • Finding the optimal solution in the river water quality management system is very hard with the non-linearity of the water quality model. Many suggested methods for that using the linear programming, non-linear programming and dynamic programming, are failed to give an optimal solution of sufficient accuracy and satisfaction. We studied a method to find a solution optimizing the river water quality management in the aspect of the efficiency and the cost of the waste water treatment facilities satisfying the water Quality goals. In the suggested method, we use the QUAL2E water quality model and the genetic algorithm. A brief result of the project to optimize the water quality management in the Youngsan river is presented.
