Background: The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) is gaining attention as an efficient decomposer of food waste. However, recalcitrant compounds such as plastics mixed into food waste may have negative effects on its growth and survival. Moreover, its efficiency of food waste degradation may also be affected by plastics. In addition, salt (NaCl) can also be present in high concentrations, which also reduces the efficiency of H. illucens-mediated food waste treatment. In this study, we assessed the growth of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) reared on food waste containing polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) and NaCl. The weight of BSFL was measured every 2-4 days. Survival and substrate reduction rates and pupation ratio were determined at the end of the experiment. Results: The total larval weight of Hermetia illucens reared on food waste containing PS was greater than that of the control on days 20 and 24. However, the survival rate was lower in the group treated with 5% PS, as was substrate reduction in all PS-treated groups. The weight of BSFL reared on food waste containing PE was lower than that of the control on day 6. PE in food waste did not affect the survival rate, but the pupation ratio increased and substrate consumption decreased with increasing PE concentrations. Regardless of the plastic type, the addition of NaCl resulted in decreased larval weight and pupation ratio. Conclusions: Larval growth of black soldier fly was inhibited not by plastics but by substrate salinity. Additional safety assessments of larvae reared on food waste containing impurities are needed to enable wider application of BSFL in vermicomposting.
Due to the environmental problem caused by plastics largely used in various fields, the importance of recycling is being emphasized. A research on material separation of ABS and PS mixed plastic waste, using a triboelectrostatic separator, was carried out for recovery the ABS. As a results of research on charging characteristic for choosing charging material, it was confirmed that ABS was optimum charging material for a tribo-charger in the material separation of ABS and PS. In the material separation using ABS charger, ABS grade of 99.5% and recovery of 92.5% were achieved at 20 kV, splitter position +2 cm from the center and 30% relative humidity. Therefore, material separation technique for recycling ABS and PS mixed plastic waste was established.
The total hydrocarbon distribution of oil products obtained from the pyrolysis of four kinds of mixtures of polyethylene-polystyrene waste has been studied by multidimensional chromatography(high performance liquid chromatography followed by capillary gas chromatography)/mass spectrometry. Saturated, unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons in oil products were selectively pre-separated according to structural groups by HPLC and the weight fraction of each group was estimated by analysis of each component using GC-FID response factors. The hydrocarbon distribution of aliphatic fraction consists of $C_{5}$ to $C_{25}$ saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. And that of aromatics fraction consists of benzene, toluene, xylene, styrene, propenyl benzene, naphthalene, and some of derivatives. Pyrolysis temperature did not affect the ratio of total weight fraction of aliphatic over aromatic hydrocarbon distribution in case of PS only and PE-PS mixtures (1:1 and 1:4 wt. ratio) as a feed while affected the ratio of total wt. fraction in case of PE only. The optimal temperature for the maximum oil production was $600^{\circ}C$ for pyrolysis of PS and 1:1 and 1:4 mixtures of PE and PS. The optimal condition for aromatic recovery was $600^{\circ}C$ with 1:1 mixture of PE and PS. In this condition, aromatic was produced up to 90% of total oil product. The maximum yield of toluene, xylene, styrene, and propenyl benzene were 8.6, 8.9, 51.0 and 7.4% of feed for pyrolysis PS at $700^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, only 1.3% naphthalene was recovered at $700^{\circ}C$ with 1:1 PE:PS(by wt.).
In this study, the compound materials of GRT/plastics (HDPE, LLDPE, LDPE, PP and PS) were developed. Their tensile strength, strain at yield and flexural modulus according to the change in CRT content were measured. And, the physical properties of the compound materials that the GRT content was changed in the waste vinyl HDPE and pure HDPE were measured, compared and analyzed. If tile GRT is added to PE plastics, the physical properties were superior to those of PP and PS, and in the case of HDPE, the waste vinyl HDPE had superior physical properties by the GRT content to the pure HDPE.
Recycling as a stabilizer of industrial by-product can be terms of the proper handling of industrial by-product and positive side in terms of recycling of waste. This study was performed to evaluate has the possibility as stabilizer by primary processing Pre-Red Mud and Bio-Solids which are generated as waste in soils contaminated with heavy metals and compared the efficiency with steel slug being applied in an existing site. In evaluation of the arsenic-fixing ability of stabilizer in batch test, Bio-Solids have the similar arsenic-fixing ability with Pre-Red Mud, which shows 17% h igher arsenic-fixing ability than PS Ball. Since the stabilization periods using Bio-Solids and Pre-Red Mud are faster than the PS Ball, they seems to be better stabilizer than PS Ball to decrease the leaching of arsenic in contaiminated soil.
Pyrolysis characteristics of waste plastic films were investigated by using a thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolyzer-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Thermogravimetric analysis results revealed that the pyrolysis of waste plastic films can be divided into two distinct reactions; (1) the decomposition reaction of starch at between 200 and $370^{\circ}C$ and (2) that of other plastic polymers such as PS, PP, PE at between 370 and $510^{\circ}C$. The kinetic analysis results obtained by using the revised Ozawa method indicated that the apparent activation energy of the pyrolysis reaction of waste plastic films was also changed dramatically according to the different decomposition reactions of two major waste plastic film components. Py-GC/MS results also revealed that the typical pyrolyzates of each polymer in waste plastic films were levoglucosan (starch), terephthalic acid (PET), styrene monomer, dimer, and trimer (PS), methylated alkenes (PP), and triplet peaks (PE) composed of alkadiene/alkene/alkane. The phthalate, used as a polymer additive, was also detected on the pyrogram of waste plastic films mixture.
The recycling of waste XLPE(crosslinked polyethylene), which is a major source of scraps from high voltage power transmission cables, has been discussed. The waste XLPE scraps were ground into fine powder with various sizes from less than $100{\mu}m$ up to about $1000{\mu}m$ using two types of tailor-made pulverizers. The compounds were prepared in a modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder at various conditions such as different compositions, types and powder sizes of waste XLPE, screw configurations and various polymer matrices (LDPE, HDPE, PP, PS). The mechanical and rheological properties and the fracture surface or the compounds were investigated. It was found that an improved impact strength was obtained from the compound with white XLPE powder pulverized from the scraps without outer/inner semi-conductive layers. Generally, the impact strength increases with the content of XLPE but decreases with the size of XLPE. Especially for LDPE, the extrusion was possible up to 80 wt% loading of XLPE. Also, the impact strength increases with the number of kneading disc blocks in the given screw configurations. The melt viscosity of the compounds increases with increasing XLPE loading. However, the higher shear thinning behavior of the compounds at common shear rates implies proper processibility of the compounds. In addition, the impact strength for other polymer matrices used increases with XLPE and it is noticeable that the impact strength of PS/XLPE (80/20 wt%) compound was improved twice that of pure PS.
In Korea, although the generation of waste plastic has been increasing, the rate of recycling is considerably low and moreover, there is no suitable method for the treatment of waste plastics. However, pyrolysis, which is appropriate for the treatment of highly polymerized compounds, such as plastics, has recently gained much interest. In this study, a property of the products from the pyrolysis of mixed waste plastics, with a possible practical use for the recycling oil produced, were assessed. First of all, in order to investigate the pyrolysis characteristic of waste plastics, TGA (Thermogravimetric analysis) and DCS (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) were performed on a number of different plastics, including PP, LDPE, HDPE, PET and PS, as well as others. According to the result, it appeared that PP was the most efficiently pyrolyzed by changing the temperature, followed by LDPE, HDPE, PET, PS and the other plastics, in that order. From the results, the optimum conditions f3r pyrolysis were set up, and the different waste plastics pyrolyzed. The recycling oil produced from the flammable gases generated during the pyrolysis was com-pared with fuel oil by an analysis using the petroleum quality inspection method on KS(Korea industrial Standard). The results of the analysis showed the recycling oil was of a similar standard to fuel oil, with the exception of the ignition point, with a quality somewhere between that of paraffin oil and diesel fuel. With respect to these results, the quality of the recycling oil produced by the pyrolysis of waste plastics was suf-ficient for use as fuel oil.

The purposes of daily cover are to control odor and volatile organic compound emissions, to control litters, to mitigate rainfall infiltration. Under usual operation of landfill, the soil layer of 15cm thick is used for daily cover, but about $20{\sim}$25% of landfill capacity is consumed by daily cover volume. Considering our limited land and difficulty in getting landfill site, developing an alternative daily cover material which usually occupies much less volume than soil will be very significant. Also, if we can use waste material for alternative daily cover, we can get additional benefit of recycling waste.
