  • Due to the development of technology related to a weapon system and the info-communication, the battle system of a warship has to manage many kinds of human intervention tactics according to the complicated battlefield environment. Therefore, many kinds of studies about M&S(Modeling & Simulation) have been carried out recently. The previous M&S system based on an agent, however, has simply used non-flexible(or fixed) tactics. In this paper, we propose an agent modeling methodology which has reinforcement learning function for spontaneous(active) reaction and generation evolution learning Function using Genetic Algorithm for more proper reaction for warship battle. We experiment with virtual 1:1 warship combat simulation on the west sea so as to test validity of our proposed methodology. We consequently show the possibility of both reinforcement and evolution learning in a warship battle.

  • Recently the intelligent agent systems have been emerged as one of key issues for developing the defense M&S systems. However, most conventional agent architecture of M&S systems utilize the script-based models and can only deal with the individual behaviors so that they cannot suitably describe the precise tactical/strategic behavior and/or complex warfare environment. To overcome these problems, we have proposed the hierarchical multi-agent system architecture that is able to intelligently cope with the complex missions based on the functional role of each agent on the hierarchy such as an intelligence officer, captain, warship commander. Several simulation tests performed on 2:2 warship warfare models will illustrate our techniques.

  • In most existing warships combat simulation system, the tactics of a warship is manipulated by human operators. For this reason, the simulation results are restricted due to the stereotype of human operators. To deal with this, we have employed the genetic algorithm for supporting the evolutionary simulation environment. In which, the tactical decision by human operators is replaced by the human model with a rule-based chromosome for representing tactics so that the population of simulations are created and hundreds of simulation runs are continued on the basis of the genetic algorithm without any human intervention until to find emergent tactics which shows the best performance throughout the simulation. This paper proposes an evolutionary tactics generation methodology for the emergent tactics in many-to-many warship combat simulation. To do this, 3:3 warship combat simulation tests are performed.

  • Most warship combat systems inquire human operator to control several sensor and another equipments as well as decision-modeling. For this reason, many researches with multi-agent based M&S (Modeling and Simulation) have been increasingly conducted. However there cannot find any researches of M&S based analysis for anti-submarine warfare that requires a high level of mission complexity between multiple platforms. In this research, we have been developed various combat platform models such as warship, submarine and helicopter, etc. In order to apply the multi-agent-based M&S technology to the anti-submarine warfare i.e. a HVU (High Value Unit) escort mission scenario. Then we have successfully analyzed the measures of effectiveness according to the different tactics and different situations. In future, the defence engineer maybe employ our methodology and tools to analyze actual tactical problem by simply inserting actual data into our agent model.

  • High temperature alloy steel such as Ni-Cr-Mo-V material has excellent properties of high strength and high heating resistance. It has been used for several military weapon components such as gun barrel of a warship, turbine rotor and turbine disk for nuclear power plant. Being curious about this material required excellent wear resistance and durability in extreme environmental conditions. A dry wear test at the ambient air and Ar gas conditions in the room temperature were performed in this study. What's more a lubricant wear test at different temperature was conducted. In addition that DLC was coated on Ni-Cr-Mo-V alloy steel substrate with a thickness of $3{\mu}m$, a property of it was compare with lubricant conditions. All the coefficient of friction and wear volume, comparing with DLC coated specimens. The test parameters were selected as follows: 10 N for normal load; 80 rpm for sliding wear speed; and 300 m for the sliding wear distance.

  • This paper describes two kinds of personal hand-held electronic devices to enhance marine leisure safety. The one is Radar response-type safety device triggering by the pulse signal from a commercial 9GHz-band Radar to provide quick search and rescue with combined civilian-government-military fleets. The other one is M-RFID (Marine Radio Frequency IDentification) based safety electronic device using 900MHz Tx/Rx with spread spectrum frequency hopping and GPS. Through the field tests at sea using Korea Coast Guard's warship the operating performances are verified. Further plan for practical use of each device was also discussed.

  • Deck wetness phonomena has long been considered as one of the factors that degrade the performance of a ship in waves. In rough weather, the frequent shipping of water may give rise to the capsizing of the ship. Therefore an appropriate above water bow design is an improtant assert to a ship of which successful performance in rough weather is a prerequisite such as a warship. In this paper the experimental technique for estimation of deck wetness frequency is presented. The results of the model tests are compared with those of calculation using Ochi's formula. Finally the applicability of Ochi's formula is discussed.

  • Making proper judgements in urgent situations facing a submarine at the sea is very critical. This is because the commander's misjudgments could drive the entire ally to destruction in a moment. In order to generate appropriate tactics on behalf of the human commander and to analyze the effectiveness in such emergency situations, studies using intelligent agents and genetic algorithms have been conducted. In this study, inference engine based intelligent agent is adopted to each warship and submarine to generate optimal tactics on the variable environment with genetic algorithms. And we analyze the risk of the alliance according to the performance of the enemy submarine through a simple simulation and generate appropriate tactics using the genetic algorithm. Also generated tactics are evaluated and the results are analyzed to figure out why such results are formed.
