  • Wall interactions of direct injection spray were investigated using laser-sheet imaging, shadowgraphy, wetted footprint and phase Doppler interferometry techniques. A narrow-cone high-pressure swirl injector is used to inject iso-octane fuel onto a plate, which has three different impact angles inside a pressurized chamber. Heated air and plate conditions were compared with unheated cases. Injection interval was also varied in the heated case to compare dry- and wet- wall impingement behaviors. High-speed macroscopic Mie-scattering images showed that presence of wall and air temperature has only minor effect on the bulk spray structure and penetration speed for the narrow-cone injector tested. The overall bulk motions of the spray plume and its spatial position at a given time are basically unaffected until a few millimeters before impacting the wall. The surface properties of the impact surface, such as the temperature, the presence of a preexisting liquid film also have a small effect on the amount of wetting or the wetted footprint; however, they have strong influence on what occurs just after impact or after a film is formed. The shadowgraph in particular shows that the plate temperature has a significant effect on vapor phase propagation. Generally, 10-20% faster horizontal vapor phase propagation is observed along the wall at elevated temperature condition. For impingement onto a preexisting film, more splash and evaporation were also observed. Contrary to some preconceptions, there is no significant splashing and droplet rebounding from surfaces that are interposed in the path of the DI gasoline spray, especially for the oblique impact angle cases. There also appears to be a dense spray front consists of large sac spray droplets in the oblique impact angle cases. The bulk of the spray is not impacted on the surface, but rather is deflected by it The microscopic details as depicted by phase Doppler measurements show that the outcome of the droplet impaction events can be significantly influenced. Only droplets at the spray front have high enough Weber numbers for wall impact to wet, splash or rebound. Using the sign of vertical velocity, the time-resolved downward droplets and upward droplets are compared. The Weber number of upward moving droplets, which seldom exceeds unity, also decreases as the impact angle decreases, as the droplets tend to impact less and move along the wall in the deflected spray plume.

  • This Paper addresses to spray characteristics in w-shaped diesel engine combustion chamber which has impingement parts for 4 sprays injected from an injector. The two-dimensional shapes have been chosen to avoid the difficulties for analysing the spray dynamics in the real chamber. The simple shapes are reproduced with same geometries in vertical or horizontal sections through the impingement lands. The spray developments are visualized with a high speed drum camera and shadowgraphy optical system, and the droplet sizes are measured by Malvern system. The detailed discussions m made for the two different combustion chamber shapes, which are new w-shape using spray wall impaction and general w-shape. The results show that the spray characteristics of the new shape are superior to those of the general w-shape.

  • Most of the research of small engines to date focused on developing spark ignition engines occupied much parts. Recently the number of a small direct injection diesel engine applied in small cars has been increased and considered as a next generation power source for passenger cars because of its high efficiency. Therefore the combustion chamber becomes smaller and the fuel injection pressure goes higher, which makes fuel sprays impinged easily on the combustion chamber walls. When strong swirls are not induced, the fuel may not mix with air because of fuel deposition on the wall. As a positive way, the combustion chamber systems which is using spray wall impaction has been introduced and assessed by an experimental or a simulate manner. In these systems the raised lands are positioned in tile chamber for spray impaction in order to break up the fuel drops into much smaller and direct them into desirable direction. This study addresses to the effects of rho position and size of the raised land or glow plug to help the chamber design using spray wall impaction. The characteristics of the spray impinged on various lands are investigated and compared with each other. Then the chamber shapes are discussed with the characteristics and their proper position and size is proposed in any chamber volume.

  • Liquefied petroleum gas and compressed natural gas haven been regarded as promising alternative fuels because of no smoke, and they are also clean fuel for spark-ignited engine. In spark-ignited direct-injection engine, direct injection technology can increase engine volumetric efficiency significantly and also reduce necessity of throttle valve. This study designed combustion chamber equipped with visualization system. To improve ignition probability, the study designed to help three types of impingement-walls to form mixture. In doing so, LPG CNG-air mixture could be easily formed after spray-wall impingement and ignition probability increased too. The results of this study could contribute as basic resources of spark-ignited direct injection LPG and CNG engine design and optimization extensively.

  • Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damage, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle inside feedwater heater installed downstream of the turbine extraction stream line. At that point, the extract steam from the turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows to reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of feedwater heaters may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. In this paper, to compare degree of shell wall thinning mitigation rate to squared type with mitigation rate of other type baffle plate, four different types of impingement baffle plate-squared, curved, mitigating type and multi-hole type-applied inside the shell. With these comparison data, this paper describes operation of experiments and numerical analysis which is composed similar condition with real feed water heater. And flow visualization is operated for verification of experiments and numerical analysis. In conclusion, this study shows that mitigating type and multi-hole type baffle plate are more effective than other baffle plate about prevention of pressure concentration and pressure value decrease.

  • It has been recognized that alternative fuels such as Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) show less polluting combustion characteristics than diesel fuel. Furthermore, engine performance is expected to be nearly equal to that of the diesel engine if direct-injection stratified-charge combustion of the LPG can be adopted in the spark-ignition engine. However, spray characteristics of LPG are quite different from those of diesel fuel. understanding the spray characteristics of LPG and evaporating processes are very important for developing efficient and low emission LPG engines optimized in fuel injection control and combustion processes. In this study, the LPG spray characteristics and evaporating processes were investigated using the Schlieren and Mie scattering optical system and single-hole injectors in a constant volume chamber. The results show that the mixture moves along the impingement wall that reproduced the piston bowl and reaches in ignition spark plug. LPG spray receives more influence of ambient pressure and temperature significantly than that of n-dodecane spray.

  • To understand the transient behavior of droplets after impingement in a diesel engine, a numerical model for diesel sprays impinging on a flat wall is newly developed by the proposition of several mathematical formulae to determine the post-impingement characteristics of droplets. The new model consists of three representative regimes such as rebound, deposition and splash. The gas phase is modeled in terms of the Eulerian conservation equations, and the dispersed phase is calculated using a discrete droplet model. To validate the new model, the calculated results are compared with several experimental data. The results show that the new model is generally in good agreement with the experimental data. Therefore, it is thought that the new model is acceptable for the prediction of transient behavior of wall sprays.

  • It is an aim of this study to perform extensive numerical study for analyzing the anisotropic turbulence effects on spatial and temporal behaviors of diesel sprays after wall impingement. The turbulence model of Durbin is used for comparisons with the $k-\varepsilon$ model. The turbulence-induced dispersions of droplets are considered to describe the anisotropy of turbulence effectively and the spray/wall interactions are simulated using the model of Lee and Ryou. The present study investigates the internal structures of impinging diesel sprays such as Sauter mean diameter (SMD), loca1 droplet velocities, and local gas velocities and also compares the results predicted by two turbulence models with the experimental data. The Durbin's model considering the anisotropy of turbulence predicts both gas and droplet tangential velocities better than the$k-\varepsilon$ model does. It is concluded that the anisotropy of turbulence should be considered in simulating impinging diesel sprays.

  • The effect of injector geometries including the injection angle and number of nozzle holes on homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine combustion has been investigated in an automotive-size single-cylinder diesel engine. The HCCI engine has advantages of simultaneous reduction of PM and NOx emissions by achieving the spatially homogenous distribution of diesel fuel and air mixture, which results in no fuel-rich zones and low combustion temperature. To make homogeneous mixture in a direct-injection diesel engine, the fuel is injected at early timing. The early injection guarantees long ignition delay period resulting in long mixing period to form a homogeneous mixture. The wall-impingement of the diesel spray is a serious problem in this type of application. The impingement occurs due to the low in-cylinder density and temperature as the spray penetrates too deep into the combustion chamber. A hole-type injector (5 holes) with smaller angle ($100^{\circ}$) than the conventional one ($150^{\circ}$) was applied to resolve this problem. The multi-hole injector (14 holes) was also tested to maximize the atomization of diesel fuel. The macroscopic spray structure was visualized in a spray chamber, and the spray penetration was analyzed. Moreover, the effect of injector geometries on the power output and exhaust gases was tested in a single-cylinder diesel engine. Results showed that the small injection angle minimizes the wall-impingement of diesel fuel that results in high power output and low PM emission. The multi-hole injector could not decrease the spray penetration at low in-cylinder pressure and temperature, but still showed the advantages in atomization and premixing.

  • This study investigates spray characteristics before and after wall impingingment of gasoline spray in suction air flow. For this study, a rectangular model intake port was made of acrylic glass, and suction air was generated by using the forced air blower contrariwise. The injector for this study was a pintle-type port gasoline injector in which an air-assist adaptor is installed to supply assisted air. A PDPA system was employed to simultaneously measure the size and velocity of droplets near the wall. Measured droplets are divided into "pre-impinging droplets"with positive normal velocity and "post-impinging droplets"were negative normal velocity for the suction flow. The velocities, size distributions and Sauter mean diameter(SMD) of pre-and post-impinging droplets for varions injection angles and air-assists are comparatively analyzed.
