Turbulence in journal bearing operation is examined and the thermal variability is studied for isothermal, convective and adiabatic conditions on the walls under aligned and misaligned conditions. Also, the effects of a contraction ratio at the cavitation region and the mixing between re-circulating oil and inlet oil on the fluid field of oil film are included. An algorithm for the solution of the coupled turbulent Reynolds and energy equations is used to examine the effects of the various factors. Heat convection is found to play only a small role in determining friction and load under no mixing condition. However, under realistic mixing condition, the heat convection cannot be ignored. The wall temperature and heat transfer have been found to be of secondary important factors to the mixing effectiveness at the groove and the final mixture temperature.

Heat transfer characteristics of distance between impinging surface and a plane jet were experi-mentally investigated. The local heat transfer coefficients were measured by a thermochromic liq-uid crystal(TLC) The jet Reynolds number studied was varied over the range from 10,000310 to 30,000310 the nozzle-to-plate distance (H/B) from 4 to 10. It was observed that the Nusselt number increases with Reynolds number the occurrence of the secondary peak in the Nusselt number is within the potential core region the potential core of the jet flow can reach the impinging surface so that the wall jet can a transition from laminar to turbulent flow resulting in a sudden increase in the heat transfer rate.

The PFI dual injection engine using one injector per an intake port was developed for solving the DISI engine cost problem. Excellent fuel atomization and targeting of the PFI dual injection engine made enhancement on the fuel efficiency and engine power. In order to develop a PFI dual injection engine, characteristics of the in-cylinder flow and fuel behavior with respect to fuel injection angle and cone angle of the PFI dual injection engine was investigated. Numerical calculation was conducted to analyze 3D unsteady in-cylinder flow and fuel behavior using STAR-CD. The engine operating condition was 2,000rpm at WOT. As a result, the amount of intake air, evaporated fuel and fuel film according to injection angle and cone angle were presented. The results were influenced by interaction between injected fuel and intake port wall.
The flow and heat/mass transfer characteristics on the squealer tip surface of a high-turning turbine rotor blade have been investigated at a Reynolds number of $2.09{\times}10^5$, by employing the oil-film flow visualization and naphthalene sublimation technique. The squealer rim height-to-chord ratio and tip gap height-to-chord ratio are fixed as typical values of $h_{st}/c$ = 5.5% and h/c = 2.0%, respectively, for turbulence intensities of Tu = 0.3% and 15%. The results show that the near-wall flow phenomena within the cavity of the squealer tip are totally different from those over the plane tip. There are complicated backward flows from the suction side to the pressure side near the cavity floor, in contrast to the plane tip gap flows moving toward the suction side after flow separation/reattachment. The squealer tip provides a significant reduction in tip surface thermal load with less severe gradient compared to the plane tip. In this study, the tip surface is divided into six different regions, and transport phenomena at each region are discussed in detail. The mean thermal load averaged over the squealer cavity floor is augmented by 7.5 percents under the high inlet turbulence level.
Most of modem aerospace gas turbines must be operated at a gas temperature which is several hundreds of degrees higher than the melting temperatures of the materials used in their construction. Complicated cooling schemes need to be employed in the combustor walls and in the high pressure turbine stages. Internal passages are cast or machined into the hot sections of aero-gas turbine engines and air from the compressor is used for cooling. In many cases, the cooling system is engineered to utilize jets of high velocity air, which impinge on the internal surfaces of the components. They are categorized as 'Impinging Cooling Method' and 'Vortex Cooling Method'. Specially, research of new cooling system(Vortex Cooling Method) that overcomes inefficiency of film cooling and limitation of space. The focus of new cooling system that improves greatly cooling efficiency using less amount of cooling air on surface heat transfer elevation. Therefore, in this study, a numerical analysis has been peformed for characteristics of flow and heat transfer in the swirl chamber and compared with the flow measurements by LDV. Especially, for understanding high heat transfer efficiency in the vicinity of wall, we considered flow structure, vortex mechanism and heat transfer characteristics with variation of the Reynolds number.

In this study, a single-phase analysis of droplet slug with different contact angles was performed based on the visualization of experimental results. Droplet slug - flowing between gases in a hydrophobic mini channel - moves with a triple contact line without a gas liquid film on the wall. The results show that the rotational flow inside the droplet occurred; this was compared and verified with the results of two-phase analysis. The pressure field shows pressure rise at the front and rear ends. The effective length - the section that satisfies the laminar flow condition - became shorter as the droplet velocity increased. The Choi's correlation for the effective length agrees with this analysis results with a slight difference. This difference is judged as the difference in the contact angle of the slug model.

In this paper, the results gained by applying many impingement models to the cylinder and flat plate were analyzed in comparison with the experimental data to study a spray/wall interaction phenomena. To begin with, the behavior of spray injected normal to the wall was analysed using three different impingement models ; Naber and Reitz model(NR model), Watkins and Wang model(WW model) and Park and Watkins model(PW model) in the present calculation. The results obtained from these models were compared with experimental data of Katsura et. al. The results indicated that PW model was in better agreement with experimental data than the NR and WW model. Also f3r spray injected at 30DEG , the result of three models were compared with experimental data of Fujimoto et. al. The results showed that m model overpredicted the penetration in the radial direction because this model was based on the inviscid jet analogy. WW model did not predicted the radius and height of the wall spray effectively. It might be thought that this discrepancy was due to the lack of consideration of spray film velocity occurred at impingement site. The result of PW model agrees with the experimental data as time goes on. In particular, a height of the spray droplets was predicted more closely to the experimental data than the other two models. The results of PW model in which the spray droplets were distributed densely around the edge of droplet distribution shaped in a circle had an agreement with the experimental data of Fujimoto et. al. Therefore, it was concluded that PW model performed better than M and WW model for prediction of spray behavior. The numerical calculation using PW model performed to the cylinder similar to the real shape of DI engine. The results showed that vortex strength near the wall in the cylinder was stronger than that in the case of flat plate. Contrary to the flat plat, an existence of the side wall in the cylinder caused the tangential velocity component to be reduced and the normal velocity component to be increased. The flow tends to rotate to the inside of cylinder going upward to the right side wall of cylinder gradually as time passes. Also, the results showed that as the spray angle increases, the gas velocity distribution and the tumble flow seemed to be formed widely.
The basic mechanism of lubrication between the piston ring and the cylinder wall is developed theoretically under the assumption of a reciprocating and dynamically loaded slider-bearing pair of parabolic form and smooth plane. A numerical computation for the prediction in cyclic variations of film thickness, net lubricant flow and frictional behaviour is attempted, and the influenec on the performance characteristics due to the ring height, ring face radius of curvature and the degree of offset, is also examined. The computational procedures develeped for a single ring system are extended and applied further to the complex problem of a ring pack system. It is well known that the ring pressure which is the total load on a ring, can be obtained from either an experimental measurement or a gas flow analysis. In this work, the latter of a gas low analysis method was used to calculate the pressures. It is remarked that the work done was focused on the role of flow continuity and lubricant starvation within the ring pack lubrication.
