In this study, variation of ground reaction force and energy consumption are investigated while walking with four different AK prostheses in order to obtain basic biomechanical data for developing AK prosthesis for Korean. It is a important information to investigate ground reaction force(GRF) and energy consumption to evaluate efficiency and stability of the prostheses.
This paper presents an electromagnetic kinetic energy harvester which is suitable for supplying power for body-worn sensors and personal electric devices. Human motions are investigated by measuring the acceleration signal at each points of the body during walking and running. The dynamic characteristics of the harvester can be calculated from the transfer function of the system. The transduction factor can be calculated from the electromagnetic field analysis by Maxwell software. The prototype of the harvester is designed and manufactured. The theoretical power characteristics are compared with the experiment results.
Soldiers have been exposed to the risk of chilblains in cold winters. Recent studies have described sensors and IOT devices that use independent power sources based on piezoelectric energy harvesting. Therefore, the heated shoes with an independent power source have been developed. For the application of energy harvesting to shoes, it is necessary to develop a unique harvester by considering human gait characteristics. Energy harvesters and ceramics were designed and fabricated in this study. The performances of these harvesters and ceramics were evaluated experimentally. Then, the harvesters and ceramics with superior performance were selected and applied to the system. Thereafter, the heating and charging performance of the system was tested under real walking conditions. The results show that the developed system can generate adequate energy to charge the battery and heat the shoes.
Currently, Japan is undertaking a nationwide project to measure and map radioactive contamination around Fukushima, as part of the efforts to restore normalcy following the nuclear accident. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) manages the Fukushima Environmental Safety Center, located approximately 20 km north of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Minamisōma City, Fukushima Prefecture. In collaboration with the JAEA, this study involved conducting comparison experiments and analyses with radiation detectors in high radiation environments, a challenging task in Korean environments. Environmental radiation surveys were conducted using three types of detectors: CZT, NaI(Tl), and LaBr3(Ce), across two contaminated areas. Dose rate values were converted using dose rate conversion factors for each detector type, and dose rate maps were subsequently created and compared. The detectors yielded similar results, demonstrating their feasibility and reliability in high radiation environments. The findings of this study are expected to be a crucial reference for enhancing the verification and supplementation of procedures and methods in future radiation measurements and mobile surveys in high-radiation environments, using these three types of radiation instruments.
To maintain a predominantly pasture-based system, the large herd milked by automatic milking rotary would be required to walk significant distances. Walking distances of greater than 1-km are associated with an increased incidence of undesirably long milking intervals and reduced milk yield. Complementary forages can be incorporated into pasture-based systems to lift total home grown feed in a given area, thus potentially 'concentrating' feed closer to the dairy. The aim of this modelling study was to investigate the total land area required and associated walking distance for large automatic milking system (AMS) herds when incorporating complementary forage rotations (CFR) into the system. Thirty-six scenarios consisting of 3 AMS herds (400, 600, 800 cows), 2 levels of pasture utilisation (current AMS utilisation of 15.0 t dry matter [DM]/ha, termed as moderate; optimum pasture utilisation of 19.7 t DM/ha, termed as high) and 6 rates of replacement of each of these pastures by grazeable CFR (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%) were investigated. Results showed that AMS cows were required to walk greater than 1-km when the farm area was greater than 86 ha. Insufficient pasture could be produced within a 1 km distance (i.e. 86 ha land) with home-grown feed (HGF) providing 43%, 29%, and 22% of the metabolisable energy (ME) required by 400, 600, and 800 cows, respectively from pastures. Introduction of pasture (moderate): CFR in AMS at a ratio of 80:20 can feed a 400 cow AMS herd, and can supply 42% and 31% of the ME requirements for 600 and 800 cows, respectively with pasture (moderate): CFR at 50:50 levels. In contrast to moderate pasture, 400 cows can be managed on high pasture utilisation (provided 57% of the total ME requirements). However, similar to the scenarios conducted with moderate pasture, there was insufficient feed produced within 1-km distance of the dairy for 600 or 800 cows. An 800 cow herd required 140 and 130 ha on moderate and high pasture-based AMS system, respectively with the introduction of pasture: CFR at a ratio of 50:50. Given the impact of increasing land area past 86 ha on walking distance, cow numbers could be increased by purchasing feed from off the milking platform and/or using the land outside 1-km distance for conserved feed. However, this warrants further investigations into risk analyses of different management options including development of an innovative system to manage large herds in an AMS farming system.

Recently human activity recognition using accelerometer has become a prominent research area in proactive computing. In this paper, we present a real-time activity recognition system using a single tri-axial accelerometer. Our system recognizes four primary daily human activities: namely walking, going upstairs, going downstairs, and sitting. The system also computes extra information from the recognized activities such as number of steps, energy expenditure, activity duration, etc. Finally, all generated information is stored in a database as daily log.
This study examined the differences in spatio-temporal parameters, joint angle, ground reaction force (GRF), and joint power according to the changes of gait speed for trans-tibial amputees to investigate the features of the energy-storing foot for sports. The subjects walked at normal speed and at fast speed, wearing a single-axis type foot (Korec) and an energy-storing foot for sports (Renegade) respectively. The results showed that Renegade yielded faster gait speed as well as more symmetric gait pattern, compared to Korec. However, as gait speed was increased, there was no significant difference in kinematics, ground reaction force, and joint power between two artificial foots. This was similar to the results from previous studies regarding the energy-storing foot, where the walking velocity and gait symmetry have been improved. Nevertheless, the result of this study differed from the previous ones which reported that joint angle, joint power, and GRF increased as the gait speed increased except spatio-temporal parameters.
The needs of walking assistive device such as the Ankle Foot Orthosis (A.F.O.) are getting greater than before. However, most of the A.F.O. are generally imported rather than domestic manufacturing. The major reason of high import reliability is the rack of impact properties of domestic commercial products. Therefore, this research is going to focus on the evaluation of impact properties of the A.F.O. which has the high import reliability. Unfortunately, these kinds of researches are not performed sufficiently. This research is going to evaluate impact energy behavior in composite materials such as the glass/epoxy (S-glass, $[0/90]_{2S}$) and the aramid/epoxy (Kevlar-29, woven type, 8 ply) of ankle foot orthosis. The approach methods were as follows. 1) The history of impact load and impact energy due to the various velocities. 2) Relationship between the deflection and damage shape according to the impact velocities. 3) The behavior of absorbed energy and residual strength rate due to the various impact velocities.
This paper proposes a controller to regulate the supply pressure of the hydraulic power unit (HPU) for driving a bipedal robot. We establish flow rate models for charging accumulator, actuating joints and leaking from actuators and spool valves. This determines the pump driving motor speed to satisfy the demanded flow rate for operating the bipedal robot without the energy loss caused by the bypass through a pressure regulating valve. We apply proposed controller to an onboard HPU mounted on top of bipedal robot platform with twelve degrees of freedom. We implement air-walking motion and squat motion which require variable flow rate to the bipedal robot. Through this experiment, the energy efficiency of proposed controller was verified by comparing the electric energy consumed when the controller was applied and when the pump operated at constant speed. We also shows the capability of the HPU's control performance to regulate supply pressure.

Green building certifications are being adopted widely, and existing research continues to show an array of benefits to stakeholders of green certified buildings. However, little attention has been paid thus far to the effects these buildings may have on their surrounding neighborhoods economically. This research examined the effect of LEED and/or Energy Star certification on the neighborhoods surrounding certified office buildings from an economic standpoint with spatial and statistical analyses. This research showed the unit market value of LEED and/or Energy Star certified office buildings and the parameters of LEED and/or Energy Star certification had statistically a positive impact on the median unit market value of their neighborhood areas. The findings can provide useful insights into the possibilities for additional economic benefits of their neighborhoods, encouraging a win-win approach that enhances the local real estate market.
