In this study, the self-propulsion tests are performed in INHA towing tank. And the effective wake characteristics of the KVLCC2 and the KCS models are compared by the experimental results. The form factor is independent of Reynolds number. To estimate the hydrodynamic performance of a full scale ship, the form factor is determined to consider attendant on Reynolds number. In this research, the power predictions are carried out considering the form factor difference of model and full scale ship. The results of this research could be used as one of the fundamental data to the powering performance prediction.
Fin-tube heat exchangers are widely used in refrigeration systems. To improve the performance of fin-tube heat exchangers, the shape of plain fin was developed in slit fin and louver fin. These pins have higher heat transfer performance as well as larger pressure drop. Recent studies of a delta winglet vortex generators(DWVG) show less heat transfer capacity than louver fin. However, the DWVG have very small pressure drop. This paper compares the performance for the plain fin and DWVG fin in terms of flow characteristics and heat transfer based on CFD analyses. The DWVG generate vortex and delayed flow separation and leads to a reduction of a wake region behind a tube. The results show that the DWVG produce improved heat transfer and reduced pressure drop compared to a plain fin. This result is opposite to the Reynolds analogy.
The present study has numerically investigated two-dimensional flow over three circular cylinders in an equidistant side-by-side arrangement at a low Reynolds number. For the study, numerical simulations are performed, using the immersed boundary method, in the range of g* < 5 at Re= 100, where g* is the spacing between two adjacent cylinder surfaces divided by the cylinder diameter. Results show that the flow characteristics significantly depend on the gap spacing and a total of five kinds of wake patterns are observed over the range: modulation-synchronized (g* (equation omitted) 2), inphase-synchronized (g* (equation omitted) 1.5) , flip-flopping (0.3 < g* (equation omitted) 1.2) , deflected (g* (equation omitted) 0.3), and single bluff-body patterns (g* < 0.3). Moreover, the parallel and symmetric modes are also observed depending on g* in the regime of the flip-flopping pattern. The corresponding flow fields and statistics are presented to verify the observations.
Unsteady flow simulation for the tiltrotor Smart UAV configuration was performed to investigate the powered rotor wake effect on aerodynamic characteristics. Calculations were performed to simulate various flow conditions based on different flight modes including hover, conversion and cruise. Three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equation code were used for flow calculation and Chimera grid technique overlapping individually generated grids was employed. A dynamic grid method was adopted in simulation of the rotating blades. Flow calculations were also conducted for the un-powered case. Aerodynamic interaction between the rotor and airframe was investigated comparing three data sets from the un-powered, powered, and isolated rotor cases.
This paper reports the fluid flow and heat transfer around a module cooled by forced air flow generated by a piezoelectric(PZT) cooling fan. A flexible PZT fan with distortion in a fluid transport system of comparatively simple structure which was mounted on a PCB in a parallel-plate channel($450{\times}80{\times}700mm^3$) accelerates surrounding fluid locally. Input voltages of 20-100V and a resonance frequency of 23Hz were used to vibrate the cooling fan. Input power to the module was 4W. The cooling effect using a PZT fan was larger than that of free convection. Fluid flow around the module were visualized by using PIV system. The temperature distribution around heated module were visualized by using liquid crystal film(LCF). We found that the flow type was y-shaped and the cooling effect was increased by the wake generated by a piezoelectric cooling fan.
An oscillating foil can produce a driving force through the generation of a reversed $K\'{a}rm\'{a}n$ vortex street, and it can be expected to be a new highly effective propulsion system. A simple pitching foil model was made and it was operated within a water channel. The wake formation behind a pitching foil was visualized and unsteady fluid forces were measured using a 6-axis force sensor based on force and moment detectors. We have been examined various conditions such as reduced frequency, amplitude and pivot point in NACA 0010. The results showed that thrust coefficients increased with a reduced frequency. We also presented the experimental results on the characteristics of a pitching foil at various parameters.
An experimental investigation of the flow around a vertical fence was carried out using a PIV velocity field measurement technique. The vertical fence was embedded in a turbulent boundary layer. The instantaneous velocity fields measured at cross-sectional planes reveal complex longitudinal vortices that vary in size and strength, developing from the upstream location. In the instantaneous vorticity and velocity field data, the shear flow separated from the fence top is highly turbulent and shows unsteady flow characteristics. The topography of the ensemble averaged velocity fields, especially the separation bubble formed behind the fence, shows that the spatial distributions of streamwise velocity (U) and vertical (V) are symmetric, the spanwise velocity (W) is skew-symmetric with respect to the central xy-plane(z=0).

An interaction of turbulent boundary layer and local roughness effects was evaluated to investigate the shear frictional coefficient in diffuser. Clauser roughness function was applied to Karman's integral equation for governing equation. The roughness of overall and local diffuser surfaces were calculated using Cole's wall and wake law and Clauser's roughness function for turbulent boundary layer characteristics. The calculating results were compared with the experimental results of other paper. It shows some significant improyements for shear frictional coefficient. Computer code was then used to confirm the behavior of local frictional coefficient along with diffuser roughness surface for some reduction of shear flow stress.
The volume of fluid (VOF) model of FLUENT and the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) are used to simulate two-phase flows. Both methods are validated for static and dynamic bubble test cases and then compared to experimental results. The VOF method does not reduce the spurious currents of the static droplet test and does not satisfy the Laplace law for small droplets at the acceptable level, as compared with the LBM. For single bubble flows, simulations are executed for various Eotvos numbers, Morton numbers and Reynolds numbers, and the results of both methods agree well with the experiments in the case of low Eotvos numbers. For high Eotvos numbers, the VOF results deviated from the experiments. For multiple bubbles, the bubble flow characteristics are related by the wake of the leading bubble. The coaxial and oblique coalescence of the bubbles are simulated successfully and the subsequent results are presented. In conclusion, the LBM performs better than the VOF method.

Animation understanding and time-resolved analysis of the wake characteristic of 2-D sharp plane flows were executed by applying the multi-vision PIV to a sharp plane(three angle of attacks : $15^{\circ}, \; 30^{\circ}, \; 45^{\circ}$) submerged within a circulating water channel($Re = 2{\times}10^4$). The macroscopic shedding patterns were discussed in terms of instantaneous velocity, vorticity, velocity profile, kinetic energy, turbulent intensity, frequency analysis. Particularly, the time-averaged distribution of turbulent intensity in each experimental cases revealed separate island-like small regions magnitude of turbulent intensity was always strengthened.
