In order to investigate change of vortex structures and its evolving proceses, two dimensional LDV system was used for measurement of velocity vectors of tip vortex, and PIV system was also used for visualizations of tip vortex array for two bladed rotor, respectively. Experiments provided vortex locations, tangential and axial velocity components of tip vortex at six wake ages of 9.5, 10.5, 60.5, 99.5, 129.5, 169.5 and corresponded six wake ages shifted with 180 degrees per each. It was resulted that tip vortices generated by the first blade satisfy Landgrebe's model for their vortex locations even after they were accelerated by the second blade in downstream. Tangential velocity components of tip vortices follow Vatistas' n=2 model on both inside and outside regions of rotor slipstream without loss of vortex circulation. Axial velocity profiles revealed that there were small but significant perturbations just outside the primary vortex core which implies the second blade affects the wake substantially. It was also found that tip paths of each blade were not willing to be coincided intrinsically.
This work numerically investigates the effects of Reynolds number ReD (= 100 - 150), cross-sectional aspect ratio AR = ( 0.25 -1.0), and attack angle α (= 0° - 90°) on the forces, Strouhal number, and wake of an elliptical cylinder, where ReD is based on the freestream velocity and cylinder cross-section height normal to the freestream flow, AR is the ratio of the minor axis to the major axis of the elliptical cylinder, and α is the angle between the cylinder major axis and the incoming flow. At ReD = 100, two distinct wake structures are identified, namely 'Steady wake' (pattern I) and 'Karman wake followed by a steady wake (pattern II)' when AR and α are varied in the ranges specified. When ReD is increased to 150, an additional wake pattern, 'Karman wake followed by secondary wake (pattern III)' materializes. Pattern I is characterized by two steady bubbles forming behind the cylinder. Pattern II features Karman vortex street immediately behind the cylinder, with the vortex street transmuting to two steady shear layers downstream. Inflection angle αi = 32°, 37.5° and 45° are identified for AR = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75, respectively, where the wake asymmetry is the greatest. The αi effectively distinguishes the dependence on α and AR of force and vortex shedding frequency at either ReD. In Pattern III, the Karman street forming behind the cylinder is modified to a secondary vortex street. At a given AR and α, ReD = 150 renders higher fluctuating lift and Strouhal number than ReD = 100.

Effects of helicopter wakes on helicopter aerodynamics are serious, but the wake configuration is very complicated and hard to predict. The purpose of this study is the detailed observation of wake using numerical methods. Vortex lattice method and freewake method are used to track the vortices in the wake. In this paper, the wake configuration is observed during hovering flight. In the case of hovering flight at the moderate thrust level, besides tip vortex, counter-rotating vortex can be observed at the inboard part of blade. When the vortices move downward, tip vortex and counter-rotating vortex get close and influence to each other. Therefore, vortices are highly distorted due to their own instability.

The flow characteristics in the blade passage and in the wake region of a low speed axial flow fan have been investigated by experimental analysis using a rotating hot-wire sensor for design and off-design operating conditions. The results show that the tip leakage vortex is moved upstream when flow rate is decreased, thus disturbing the formation of wake flow near the rotor tip. The tip leakage vortex interfaces with blade pressure surface, and results in high velocity fluctuation near the pressure surface. From axial velocity distributions downstream of the fan rotor, large axial velocity decay near the rotor tip is observed at near stall condition, which results in large blockage compared to that at the design condition. Although the wake flow downstream of the rotor blade is clearly measured at all operating conditions, the trough of the high velocity fluctuation due to Karmann vortex street in the wake flow is mainly observed at a higher flow condition than the design flow rate.

Velocity field behind a container ship model with a rotating propeller has been investigated using PIV (particle image velocimetry) system. Four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured at 4 different blade phases and ensemble-averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of vortical structure of near wake within one propeller diameter downstream. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show the potential wake and the viscous wake formed due to the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces. The interaction between bilge vortex developed along the hull surface and the tangential velocity component of incoming flow causes to have asymmetric flow structure in the transverse plane.
To research on change of blade row flow field with tip clearance caused by upstream periodic wake, an apparatus that generate periodic wake through traversing cylinders were installed. Then how movement of upstream wake affect cascade flow and tip leakage flow were measured. Cylinder was installed in front of 50% of chord length, and traversing velocity was calculated at approximately 11.7m/s regarding inlet velocity and chord length. To measure three-dimensional velocity of flow inside blade row, single slanted hot-wire was used. From the results, when the periodic wake is inserted, the flow inside of cascade is dominantly affected by vortex that is generated from cylinder. This periodic wake affects passage vortex and tip leakage vortex.
The vortex flow behind a bluff body has been a subject of interest for a very long time because of its engineering applicability such as to vortex induced vibration. In the near wake of a bluff body, vortices are periodically shed in two shear layers, which originate in the trailing edges. The far wake is made up of the classical Karman vortices, which are connected together by streamwise and spanwise vortices. These vortex formations have been studied in many experimental and numerical ways. However, most of the studies considered non-cavitating flow. In this study, we investigated cavitating flow in the wake of a two-dimensional wedge. Experiments were conducted in a cavitation tunnel of Chungnam National University. Using a particle image velocimetry (PIV), we measured the velocity fields under two different flow conditions: non-cavitating and cavitating regimes. We also investigated the vortex shedding frequencies using an absolute pressure transducer mounted on the top of the test window. Throughout the experiments, it was found that the shedding frequency of the vortex was strongly affected by cavitation, and the Strouhal number could exceed its value in the non-cavitating regime.

Rotor wake causes unsteady aerodynamics of rotor blade. So, accurate prediction of wake is very important and vortex method is good solution for this problem. Aerodynamic force of the rotor blade is calculated by potential panel method and the rotor wake is simulated by vortex particle method. The vortex particle method is easier to treat wake-body interaction and has better performance to expect the effect of ground and fuselage interaction. Rotor in hovering and forward flight condition is simulated through these methods. Thrust and surface pressure of rotor are compared with experiment data.

Unsteady behavior of the early wake in the viscous flow field past an impulsively started semicircular cylinder is studied numerically. In this paper, we propose the hybrid diffusion scheme to simulate dynamic characteristics of wake such as a fishtail-like flapping and an alternate vortex-shedding more accurately. This diffusion scheme based on particle strength exchange is mixed with the stochastic nature of random walk method. Also, the viscous splitting algorithm which calculates convective and diffusion terms successively is applied in order to handle random walk method effectively. Consequently, the early behavior of wake due to the breakdown of symmetrical vortici balance is more practically simulated with the vortex particle method.
Two-dimensional numerical simulations are conducted at a low Reynolds number Re = 100 to investigate the near wake of three identical circular cylinders that are arranged in an equilateral triangular configuration. The incident angle of the three-cylinder configuration with respect to incoming flow is varied from θ = 0° to 60°, while the spacing between adjacent cylinders (L) covers a wide range of L/D = 1.25-7.0, where D is diameter of the cylinder. Typical flow structures in the near wake of the three-cylinder configuration are identified, including a single Karman vortex street, bistable flip-flopping near wake, anti-phase and/or in-phase vortex shedding, shear layer reattachment, and vortex impingement, depending on the configuration (L/D, θ). The behavior of Strouhal number (St) is discussed in detail, echoing the distinct structures of near wake. Furthermore, fluid forces on the individual cylinders are examined, which, though highly depending on (L/D, θ), exhibit a close correlation to the near wake behavior.
