  • The most critical technology to implement ubiquitous health care is Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) technology which makes use of various sensor technologies, processor integration technology, and wireless network technology-Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN)-to easily gather and monitor actual physical environment information from a remote site. With the feature, the USN technology can make the information technology of the existing virtual space expanded to actual environments. However, although the RFID and the WSN have technical similarities and mutual effects, they have been recognized to be studied separately, and sufficient studies have not been conducted on the technical integration of the RFID and the WSN. Therefore, EPCglobal which realized the issue proposed the EPC Sensor Network to efficiently integrate and interoperate the RFID and WSN technologies based on the international standard EPCglobal network. The proposed EPC Sensor Network technology uses the Complex Event Processing method in the middleware to integrate data occurring through the RFID and the WSN in a single environment and to interoperate the events based on the EPCglobal network. However, as the EPC Sensor Network technology continuously performs its operation even in the case that the minimum conditions are not to be met to find complex events in the middleware, its operation cost rises. Moreover, since the technology is based on the EPCglobal network, it can neither perform its operation only for the sake of sensor data, nor connect or interoperate with each information system in which the most important information in the ubiquitous computing environment is saved. Therefore, to address the problems of the existing system, we proposed the design and implementation of USN integration management system. For this, we first proposed an integration system that manages RFID and WSN data based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Secondly, we defined the minimum conditions of the complex events to detect unnecessary complex events in the middleware, and proposed an algorithm that can extract complex events only when the minimum conditions are to be met. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methods we implemented SIP-based integration management system.

To examine the minimum conditions, a index and a query index are used to extract complex events. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methods, In the case of the method of extracting complex events based on a bitmap index, we used the existing extraction method and NS2 simulation to evaluate its performance and thus to show its good performance in terms of the number of operation and the processing time for the complex events.

  • This paper proposes an efficient caching mechanism appropriate for the integrated RFID middleware which can integrate wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and RFID (radio frequency identification) systems. The operating environment of the integrated RFID middleware is expected to face the situations of a significant amount of data reading from RFID readers, constant stream data input from large numbers of autonomous sensor nodes, and queries from various applications to history data sensed before and stored in distributed storages. Consequently, an efficient middleware layer equipping with caching mechanism is inevitably necessary for low latency of request-response while processing both data stream from sensor networks and history data from distributed database. For this purpose, the proposed caching mechanism includes two optimization methods to reduce the overhead of data processing in RFID middleware based on the classical cache implementation polices. One is data stream cache (DSC) and the other is history data cache (HDC), according to the structure of data request. We conduct a number of simulation experiments under different parameters and the results show that the proposed caching mechanism contributes considerably to fast request-response times.

  • Efficient Query processing and optimization are critical for reducing network traffic and decreasing latency of query when accessing and manipulating sensor data of large-scale sensor networks. Currently it has been studied in sensor database projects. These works have mainly focused on in-network query processing for sensor networks and assumes homogeneous sensor networks, where each sensor network has same hardware and software configuration. In this paper, we present a framework for efficient query processing over heterogeneous sensor networks. Our proposed framework introduces query processing paradigm considering two heterogeneous characteristics of sensor networks: (1) data dissemination approach such as push, pull, and hybrid; (2) query processing capability of sensor networks if they may support in-network aggregation, spatial, periodic and conditional operators. Additionally, we propose multi-query optimization strategies supporting cross-translation between data acquisition query and data stream query to minimize total cost of multiple queries. It has been implemented in WSN middleware, COSMOS, developed by ETRI.

  • In the electric power industry, It is important that the supply of energy must always be guaranteed. To satisfy these requirements, various forms of technologies are needed, such as RFID tag, reader, sensor network, middleware and so on. WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) technologies of the electric power industry are in the early stage and there is no clear guideline for developing electric facility management system using WSN. Relevant experience is limited, the challenge will be to derive requirement from business practice and to determine whether it is possible or not. To explore this issue, we focus on researching and field test of prototype system in Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). In this paper we describe requirement from power industry. And we introduce design and implementation of the power facility monitoring system.

  • As web based software has developed recently, service via web has increased gradually. For this, many research organizations and reports call web is the platform of software. While web based technologies have developed, middleware of WSN and its application service has been developed from desktop based operation system. So WSN's technology reached uppermost limit of desktop application. There's difficulty in integrating, distributing and maintaining & repairing for WSN due to a tightly-coupled structure which's related closely to the hardware of sensor nod. Unlike this, web has a loosely-coupled structure and an opened system, so web service or Rich internet application (RIA) is helpful to solve the above limits. Especially, RIA is web application but can be the platform of WSN' application because it gives us various methods to communicate with user interface similar to desktop application. In this study, I suggest Message System for WSN Using RIA, expanding WSN's interconnectedness and accessibility to internet.

  • WSN gateway which runs transmission between WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) based on IEEE 802.15.4 and PN (Public Network) based on TCP/IP belongs to core technology of application based on two network. Because WSN Gateway receives various kinds of packet from many sensor nodes in an uncertain time as well as uses hardware's performance enough, it has high level of complexity about software and it is hard to be implemented. To solve these problems, this paper suggests both efficient event detection scheme for identify packet and implementation unit of protocol called 'Transaction'. The results of applying the proposed network framework, complexity of software reduces. And we provide software development environments of reflect various performance requirements.
