The occurrence of insect pests of Lycium chinense was monitored at 4 organic farms that was cultivated with environment-friendly management at Cheongyang, Chungnam from May, 2012 to September, 2014. Total 4 orders and 18 species occurred in the L. chinense. Among them, 4 major pests and Lepidopteran and Hemipteran insect pests were investigated the occurrence pattern. During the budding, the population density of Myzus persicae was very high in late-May and early-June, and the injury by Lema decempunctata was increased from mid-June. The injuries by Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata and Hedma lycia sp. were continued throughout the growing season. From the fruit held in late-July, hemipteran insects including Plautia stali and Halyomorpba balys were sucking the fruit, and their injury to L. chinense were gradually increased. In the case of Eriophys macrodonis densities to increase gradually from early July. The population density of E. macrodonis in 2014 was rapidly increased more than 5 times compared with 2012 and 2013. It was supposed that the initial control of mites or the removing of over-wintering density in the past year might be neglected. However, there is a need to more review the factors for the mass occurs.
Estuary islets should be managed systematically because they are important places for birds to rest and breed. This paper investigates the environmental properties of islets where the sand banks are located from east to west on the southernmost of Nakdong estuary during a year (September 2003 $\sim$ August 2004). The research showed that 59 species and 19,148 individuals were found in the area A (Jangja Shinja-Do) and 61 species and 28,394 individuals in the area B (Saja-Do; Beakhapdeung Doyodeung). Totally, 74 species and 47,539 individuals were observed in both of this estuary. Shorebirds are the most observed species in both areas. In area, most of individuals were especially observed in the spring when Shorebirds migrate northward for breeding. In B area, various species were also observed in the fall when they migrate southward for wintering. Therefore, many groups of birds are observed around Shinja-Do in the spring. They passed the winter in Doyodueng, associated with feeding in the main stream of Nakdong river mainly. Although the southernmost sand bar is the breeding place to access to outside without interception, invasion by human beings and predators (mice, weasels and etc.) gives a fatal blow for birds to breed or rest. The reed which is a tall herbaceous plant is flourished according to the process of ecological succession. Therefore, the sand bar becomes a land. It results in reduction of habitats and breeding grounds for birds. In conclusion, these areas where birds can use the islets as habits and breeding places must be preserved by restraining luxuriance of reeds and systematic management of human beings and predators is necessary.
Background: The composition of wild bird populations in temperate zones greatly varies depending on phenological changes rather than other environmental factors. Particularly, wild birds appearing in wetlands fluctuate greatly due to the crossover of species arriving for breeding during the summer and for wintering. Therefore, to understand the changes to species composition related to phenology, we conducted this basic analysis of populations to further the cause of the protection of wetland-dependent wild birds. Methods: It is wrong to simply divide a wild bird population investigation into seasons. This study identifies species composition and indicator species that change along with seasons. Wetlands to be surveyed are protected by natural monuments and wetland inventory and are in a state close to nature. In order to identify as many species as possible in wetlands, a survey was conducted in both shallow and deep wetlands. The water depth varied in these areas, ranging from 0.2 to 2.0 m, allowing for both dabbling and diving ducks to inhabit the area. Surveys were conducted using line-transect and distance sampling methods and were conducted at intervals of 2 weeks. The survey was conducted under the following three categories: the eco-tone and emergent zone, the submergent zone, and the water surface. The survey was conducted along a wetland boundary by observing wild birds. A PC-ord program was used for clustering, and the SAS program was used to analyze the changes in species composition. The data strongly indicates that day length is the main factor for seasonal migration periods, despite the fact that climate change and increasing temperatures are often discussed. Results and conclusions: The indicator species for determining seasons include migrant birds such as Ardea cinerea, Alcedo atthis, Anas penelope, and Poiceps ruficollis, as well as resident birds such as Streptopelia orientalis and Emberiza elegans. Importantly, increases in local individual counts of these species may also serve as indicators. The survey results of seasonal fluctuations in temperate zones shows that spring (April to June), summer (July to September), autumn (October), and winter (November to March) are clearly distinguishable, even though spring and summer seasons tend to overlap, leading to the conclusion that additional research could more clearly identify fluctuation patterns in species composition and abundance in the study area.

This study was conducted at the National Institute of Animal Science from 2010 to 2017. As a variety that is sufficiently productive in the southern regions to replace imported varieties and sufficiently cold-resistant to be cultivated in the central-northern regions, "IR605" was developed and submitted to the Korea Seed & Variety Service in an application for protection. The novel Italian ryegrass variety "IR605" is a diploid with green leaves, a semi-erect growth habit before wintering, and an erect growth habit in the spring. "IR605" was a medium maturing variety with a heading date of around May 15th. "IR605" had a flag leaf width of 9.9 mm, flag leaf length of 26.7 cm, and plant length on the heading date of 100 cm, which was approximately 5 cm longer than "Kowinearly." The stem thickness and ear length of "IR605" are 0.08 mm thicker and 0.5 cm longer than those of "Kowinearly", respectively. The cold-resistance of "IR605" was weaker than that of "Kowinearly", but strong enough to be cultivated in Pyeongchang, Gangwon province. The dry matter yield of "IR605" (9,308 kg/hectare) was 20% higher than that of "Kowinearly", which was further pronounced in the southern region of Haenam, where there was a 52% increased (p < 0.05). The in vitro dry matter digestibility of "IR605" was 68.4% at which was slightly higher than that of "Kowinearly", The total digestible nutrients was 58.5%, which was slightly lower than "Kowinearly". Overall, the feed quality characteristics of "IR605" were similar to those of "Kowinearly".
Objective of this study was to evaluate the adaptation and the soil conservation effect of improved wild vine in sloped upland of highland about 600m from sea level in Korea. A mainly producing district of the improved wild vine in Korea was distributed 230m to 540m from sea level, and its rainfall ranged 1,200 to 1,700 mm. The lowest temperature was from -19.6 to $-25.4^{\circ}C$. Their soil texture was from sandy loam to clay loam, where drainage class was well drained and the contents of soil organic matter and total nitrogen in the improved wild vine's cultivation area were higher than those of Chinese cabbage's cultivation area in the highland. According to improved wild vine's cultivation methods, the amounts of soil erosion were 25.5,4.1, and $1.8MT\;ha^{-1}$ in clean culture, part sod + mulching, and nature sod, respectively. Those were below 30 to $80MT\;ha^{-1}$ of sloped upland at highland in Korea. The result suggests that it is possible to cultivate the improved wild vine over wintering at 600m of highland above the sea level. We can substitute the improved wild vine for Chinese cabbage in the highland for soil conservation.
The purposes of this study were to analyze the weediness potential associated with 'Vitamin A enforced rice' and to evaluate the relationships between growth characteristics and environmental adaption related to survival ability in the natural environment. 'Vitamin A enforced rice', 'Nagdong', donor variety of 'Vitamin A enforced rice' and three other varieties were used for this study. The 'Vitamin A enforced rice' was experimented according to ratio of ripened grain, shattering of grain, germination traits, germination ratio of low temperature, emergence ratio after wintering, ratio of viviparity, and growth ratio after ratooning ability. 'Vitamin A enforced rice' was not significant between 'Nagdong' and other varieties in seven characters. Germination ratio was similar of Vitamin A enforced rice' and 'Nagdong', but average germination ability of was different at low temperature. Also, shattering of grain and germination ratio of alternating temperature were significant between 'Nagdong' and other varieties. These results suggested that the relationships between growth characteristics and environmental adaption in 'Vitamin A enforced rice' could be applied to the stability of weediness potential and biosafety guide in GM rice.
The distribution, and length and age compositions of Johnius belengeri were studied using samples collected by an otter trawl from the five different coastal waters of Korea ; Asan Bay, Cheonsu Bay, waters off Yeongkwang and Samchonpo, and Yeongil Bay. This fish showed a high density of 1,147 individuals/$10,000m^2$ and predominated in abundance of the demersal fish in the coastal water off Yeongkwang. The mean density was 94 individuals/$10,000m^2$ in Cheonsu Bay and 8-24 individuals/$10,000m^2$ in Asan Bay and in the water off Samchonpo. Few fish were collected from Yeongil Bay. J. belengeri occurred from spring to autumn in the study area and showed a relatively high density in spring or in summer. The fish collected in spring and in summer composed of adults of age group I, II and III. Some juveniles began to occurred in the waters off Yeongkwang and Samchonpo from summer. The fish collected in autumn consisted mainly of the fish of age group 0. It implies that the adults after spawning moved out from the embayments for feeding. but the young fish stayed and grew in the embayments until late autumn when they migrated to the offshore water for wintering.
The study was conducted to obtain some basic information to establish the system of performance-tests and selection of honeybee queens(Apis mellifera) under Korean circumstances, Colony performances were tested with thirty colonies of Apis mellifera at two apiaries in Taegu, Korea from September, 1988 to August 1989. The results of performance-testing on the colonies are summarized as follows : The colony weight measured before wintering was averaged $23.6{\pm}1.90kg$ and the colony weight was decreased by $2.9{\pm}0.82kg$ in average during winter season. Thirteen colonies were entered in two story hive from thirty single box colonies from April 17 to May 5, 1989 with increase of bee population and, consequently, the ability of enter-supers of the colonies apperared to be low. The ability of collecting pollen was measured to be $14.8{\pm}2.15gr$ per colony during 24 hours in April, and the number of swarm cells was counted $12.5{\pm}3.43$ cells per colony in aveage. Tendency to use propolis appeared to be moderate, and the number of returning foragers for a minute per colony was counted $108.7{\pm}18.31$ bees in average. Brood area was measured $2,464{\pm}628,67cm^2$ per colony in the post nectar flow season of acasia, and 30.8 percent of the colonies appeared to be infected with chalkbrood disease, The amount of honey production was $14.9{\pm}8.49kg$ per colony, which was harvested two times during the main nectar flow season of acasia.

There are variations among grapevine genotypes in the levels of tolerance to cold, and cold-hardiness of grapevine has been affected by the change of short-term environment during over-wintering. In this study, the responses of vines to cold in open field and rain-shelter system were investigated to obtain useful information in increasing the tolerance to cold in grape cultivation. Total carbohydrate content of bearing mother branches was higher in the rain-shelter system than in the open field, and lower in the branches of 'Muscat Bailey A' than in 'Campbell Early' and 'Kyoho'. Bud-burst and shoot growth were better in the rain-shelter system than in open field, whereas there is no significant difference among the treatments of net beside vines. There was also low incidence of gray mold in rain shelter system. Stilbene compounds such as t-piceid, resveratrol, piceatannol, c-piceid were accumulated in the cold-treated shoot from vine cuts harvested in rain shelter system. Genes of chalcone isomerase, manganese superoxide dismutase, proline rich protein 2, and temperature induced lipocalin were highly expressed in the cold-treated shoot from vine cuts harvested in rain shelter system. While there was not change of air temperature, but high reduction of wind speed in the rain shelter system compared to open field, and increase in the reduction of wind speed by net treatment. The damage of grapevines by cold in the extreme low temperature could be reduced by keeping them in the rain shelter system with net during winter season.
