  • The trophic state assessment of the Hwoiya reservoir was estimated using the Trophic state indices (TSIs) of Carlson and Aizaki using the transparency and concentrations of chlorophyll-a and total phosphorus obtained from two sites of the reservoir. The TSIs assessments showed that eutrophic phenomena occur frequently in the Hwoiya reservoir. In addition, strategies to reduce the phosphorus especially would be prepared because the Hwoiya reservoir exceeded phosphorus-limiting state of 17 < TN/TP (total nitrogen/total phosphorus). Three scenarios for a simulation of the dredging effect of sediments on the water quality using the WASP7 model were made at two sites, which were 10% (scenario 1), 40% (scenario 2) and 60% elution of the pollutants from sediments (scenario 3). In the most elution case (60%), scenario 3, it was considered that 6.4% TN and 9.3% TP at site 1, and 3.9% TN and 5.6% TP at site 2 could be reduced.

  • 1. Paju area of Kyonggydo has received serious damages by Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu in the bushes of Castanea crenata S. et Z. since 1965. I have also found the middle parts of whole country of Korea has damaged by this wasp. 2. Bobwonri was the worst case in its damage by Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu with most prosperous parasite, Aletia flavostigma singularis Butler and Dictyoploca japonica Moore. I conclude that this is the result of the lack of beneficial insects and isolated bush formation. 3. The chestnut bush at Bunsuri was recovering from the damage of gall wasp nevertheless it was illustrated big damage at last year's hranches. I conclude that this recovering phenomena is closely related with the insect fauna of this area and this characteristic insect fauna was derived from the bush formation which reveals specific bush arrangement that can be illustrated as surrounded by another bush of Quercus acutissima Carruthers. 4. As a final conclusion, I recommend mixed bush formation of chestnut tree with Quercus species to control insect population dynamics in healthy status.

  • Water quality in Daechung Lake was predicted for various discharge conditions of Yongdam dam. The same scenarios were applied as in the previous paper by the authors for Keum River water quality modeling. Effects in water quality due to changes in discharge conditions from Yongdam Dam were less distinct to the Daechung Lake than to the inflowing Keum River due to sink processes in the lake. For the minimum flow year, it is appropriate to maintain Yongdam dam discharge rate to 8.9 $m^3$/sec considering the current field conditions and future predictions of TN and TP concentrations of Yongdam dam. Effect of Yongdam dam discharge conditions to the Daechung Lake water quality were stronger for drier years. However it should be noted that the effects were dependent upon the water quality of Yongdam discharge at the same time. Therefore, water quality management effort should be emphasized before the discussion over the discharge volume of Yongdam dam. The input data sets for simulations in this study were formulated using the available data and assumptions based on authors experiences for the fields. Therefore, continued data collection effort will ensure the validity of this study.

  • Web building of the spider is an investment behavior for prey foraging with genetic constraint. Individual's decision-making on the web construction depends on diverse environmental variables. This study investigated web structure of the wasp spider, Argiope bruennichi, to compare individual's behaviors in dry field and in wet field. We measured 35 web structures in dry field (Chunma-San, Incheon) showing relatively low humidity (46.4%) and luxuriant herbage, and 13 web structures in the wet rice field (73.9%; Taean-Gun, Chungnam). Comparing to the wet field the individuals in the dry field invested significantly more silk: $32.5{\pm}12.8$ number of silk spirals used in the dry field vs. $16.9{\pm}5.4$ in the wet field. The web area of the dry field was greater than that of the wet field: $976{\pm}643cm^2$ vs. $532{\pm}254cm^2$. The web height, distance between the ground and the center of the web, appeared higher in the dry field than in the wet field: $71.4{\pm}39.6cm$ vs. $49.6{\pm}31.2cm$. Also the web constructed in the dry field showed longer stabilimentum than the web of the wet field: $18.8{\pm}3.4cm$ vs. $3.9{\pm}3.2cm$. The perpendicular inclination and the inclination to East-West of the web showed no difference between the two fields. This study suggests that adult females of A. bruennichi could modulate its construction behavior depending on the micro-habitat factors.

  • The WASP model was applied to Bokha stream with 8.4km of its main stem located in Ichon-gun, Kyonggi province in Korea. The stream was divided into 26 segments with each of 400m length, and 5 segments were embraced boundaries of its tributaries. The parameters of the model were calibrated by the trial and error method to minimize differences between observed and simulated concentration of water quality constituents. The correlation coefficients for DO, $NO_3-N,\;PO_4-P$ and organic P showed high values providing the ability of simulation. The correlation coefficients for BOD and $NH_3-N$ showed low values in both calibration and verification test.

  • 9 species of parasitoids emerged from chestnut gall samples collected at Chunchon, Kangwon in June to July 1995 - 1997, and 8 species emerged from gall samples at the 5 investigation sites in December 1997. The primary parasitoids among them were Torymus sinensis, Torymus geranii, Sycophila variegata, Megastigmus nipponicus, Megastigmus maculipennis, Eurytoma brunniventris, Ormyrus flavitibialis, Ormyrus punctiger, Eupelmus urozonus, while the secondary parasitoids were Torymus geranii, Sycophila variegata, Eupelmus urozonus, Eupelmus sp., Eurytoma setigera, Ormyrus punctiger. Torymus sp.. Some of secondary parasitoids were facultative hyperparasitoids, parasitizing the gall wasp as well as primary parasitoids, Among these natural enemies, Torymus sinensis was dominant at all sites. At Chunchon, the rate of gall formation showed decreasing tendency as the function of generation and the parasitism rate of Torymus sinensis showed increasing tendency gradually. But the rate of parasitization of the secondary parasitoids(Sycophila variegata, Eupelmus urozonus, Torymus geranii, Ormyrus puntiger) ranged from 4.0% to 10.5%. The mortality was high during June to October which was immature stage of Torymus sinensis, and mainly caused by secondary parasitoids. Torymus sinensis emerged from April to May and the estimated dates of 50% emergence was 21st April. The estimated dates of 50% emergence for the other, Sycophila variegata, Eupelmus urozonus, Torymus geranii, and Ormyrus puntiger were 25th April, 30th April, 4th May, and 22nd May, respectively.

  • Investigated data on Lake Okjeong were used for the simulation of water quality. According to the simulation results, the effective scheme of water quality management on reservoir has been proposed. It has been recognized that the water quality of Lake Okjeong is under eutrophic and mesotrophic condition even though there are seasonal variation. The water quality of lake is mainly affected by the inflow of pollutant load from watershed. Therefore, to estimate and quantify the accurate amounts of pollutants flowing into reservoir is absolutely necessary for the effective management of water quality on Lake Okjeong. When the pollutant load measured during 7 different rainy periods in 1999 was compared with total pollutant load in 1999. TN and TP measured during 7 different rainy periods showed almost 50% of total pollutant load. In case of SS, it was 72.8%. On the other hand, the rainfall amount measured during the 7 different rainy periods was about 17.5% of total rainfall amount in 1999. Release rate of TP shows 11.92 mg/L at fish farm site and 0.2∼1.9 mg/L at monitoring station of water quality on Lake Okjeong, and which is considered to be less than that of other foreign reservoirs under the circumstances of anoxic condition. For the effective management of water quality on Lake Okjeong. WASP5 water quality simulation model has been applied and verified, and the verified model was used to propose the effective scheme of water quality management. In this case, 6 different scenarios were applied, by changing the amount of inflow of pollutant load in each subbasin. The most effective scheme has turned out that pollutant load generated from Imsil and Gwanchon subbasin should be reduced, and the best way to improve the water a quality is to reduce the pollutant load at every subbasin. According to the simulation result, wastewater treatment facility should be located at every subbasin.

  • Web structure of spiders is a foraging strategy as well as an investment to get prey. In order to make a good foraging decision spiders should change its foraging strategy in the basis of sensory information provided by potential prey species. We conducted experiments to demonstrate whether a wasp spider, Argiope bruennichi modifies its web-building behavior after experiencing sensory information emitted by a cricket species, Teleogryllus emma. To know how the web structures would be modified, we quantified web characteristics after providing sensory information of the cricket and compared to the control group. Web construction decreased in the course of the experiment in both, control group(without stimulus) and experimental group(with stimuli). The results did not show remarkable differences between two groups. However, on the first day after providing sensory information of the cricket, the web-building behavior of A. bruennichi decreased only in 3.7% of the experimental group individuals against 11.8% of the control group individuals. The number of the stabilimentum constructions decreased overall in both groups. On the first day the decreasing proportion was doubled in the control group(14.7%), comparing to the experimental group(7.4%). The individuals did not lower its web height and did not extend its web area according to sensory information of the prey.

  • In this study we tried to develop a biological method for evaluating environment using the potter wasps as an indicator. Wasp species in family Eumenidae, were collected from 13 locations including agricultural area using nest trap. The wasps collected were classified and selected candidate species as an environmental evaluation indicator. Seven species were collected and the Anterhynchium flavomarginatum was the most dominant species. The number of the nest of potter wasps was 12.8/m both in the non-fertilizer and the non-pesticide areas and 7.2/m in the general agricultural areas. The number of nests was 13.4/m in the location where the Degree of Green Naturality (DGN) was high (4.28) and it was 1.2/m where the DGN was low (1.00), suggesting that the index of both richness and diversity tend to increase in locations with more nests. Based on these results, A. flavomarginatum, Orancistrocerus drewseni (Saussure), Isodontia nigellus and Chalicodoma sculpturalis were selected as indicator species for the evaluation of environment including agricultural ecosystem. And a standard for grading an environment (I to IV) was made based on the occurrence, the total number of nesting and the species diversity of potter wasps.
