  • A severe defoliation by typhoon in early autumn reduces fruit quality for the current season and reserve accumulations for the next season. This study was conducted to determine the effects of foliar applications during the autumn on alleviating the damages after defoliation. Leaves of 2-year-old 'Fuyu' trees, grown in 50-L pots under a rain-shelter, were 75%-defoliated on September 9. In mid-September and early October, trees were treated either with eight foliar applications of urea or with four alternating applications of urea and $KH_2PO_4$ (urea + KP application), all at 0.5% (w/v). Trees untreated after the defoliation served as the control. The urea applications slightly increased N and P concentrations of the leaves collected on November 6, while urea + KP applications significantly increased P and K concentrations. Foliar applications did not affect fruit growth, but tended to decrease skin coloration. Fruit soluble solids increased by 1.5 and $1.0^{\circ}Brix$ for urea and urea + KP applications, respectively. There was a significant increase in dry weight of fine root for the foliar application treatments but not in those of aerial woods and larger roots. With the foliar applications, N concentration tended to increase in the permanent organs but not P and K, whereas soluble sugars and starch notably increased in shoot, trunk, or fine root regardless of the different applications. Results indicated that the foliar applications could partially help to restore fruit quality and carbohydrate accumulations in the defoliated trees.

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the change of the palatal length after palatoplasty in congenital cleft palate. With the data from one hundred and twelve patients with cleft palate who had been treated at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Chonnam University Hospital over a period of 10 years(April 1995 to April 2004). The epidemiological characteristics, the method of palate repair, the postoperative complications and the extent of palatal lengthening were investigated and analyzed statistically. Incomplete cleft palate occurs more frequently than complete cleft palate. Male were affected 2.1 times more than female in complete cleft palate, and female were affected 1.2 times more than male in incomplete cleft palate. Dorrance method and Wardill V-Y method were frequently used in repair of incomplete cleft palate. Wardill V-Y method, Furlow double opposing Z-plasty, two flap method, and Perko method were widely used in repair of complete cleft palate. The extent of palatal lengthening was greater in the incomplete cleft palate group(5.84 mm) than in the complete cleft palate group(4.71 mm), and in the Furlow double opposing Z-plasty group(5.70 mm) than in the push back palatoplasty group(5.33 mm). But no significant difference was noted. Palatal fistula and wound dehiscence were popular postoperative complications in cleft palate. These results indicate that the extent of palatal lengthening, which contributing to speech function, is a range of 3.5% to 24.0%(average 10.8%) after palatoplasty in cleft palate patients.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the difference and genetic similarity at the level of molecular genetics. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood of Holstein, Korean cattle, Charolais, and hybrid between Korean cattle and charolais and RAPD(random amplified polymorphic DNAs) was analyzed by PCR(polymerase chain reaction). After genetic similarity value from different breeds are analyzed, genetic similarity was estimated by UPGMA(unweighted pair-group method using average). The results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: 1. When genomic DNA which was extracted from different breeds was subjected to electrophoresis on 1.5% agarose gel, bigger than 12.2kb was appeared. Ratio by absorbance of $A_{260}/A_{280}$ was 1.75~2.10, indicating that genomic DNA was quite pure for RAPD analysis. 2. Different band patterns by RAPD were appeared according to the breeds in cattle. The best primer used to distinguish Holstein from other breeds was 5'-GAC CGC TTG T-3'. 3. A 340bp fragment was amplified in $33.0^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature for the Holstein and Charolais breeds, but any amplification was not occurred in this annealing temperature for Korean cattle and hybrid. In addition, a 340bp fragment was amplified in $37.5^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature for the Holstein and Korean cattle, but any amplification was not occurred in this annealing temperature for Charolais and hybrid. For the reaction of PCR. $37.5^{\circ}C$ and $33.0^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature was shown to be best for genetic marker identification from Holstein, Charolais, and hybrid between Korean cattle and Charolais. 4. When genetic similarity from different breeds are analyzed at the both temperature of $33.0^{\circ}C$ and $37.5^{\circ}C$, the genetic similarity value of Holstein and Korean cattle, Holstein and Charolais, Korean cattle and Charolais, and Korean cattle and hybrid were 0.666~0.777, 0.615~0.666, 0.400~0.461 and 0.857~0.888, respectively. 5. It could be concluded that different breeds are capable of distinguishing by RAPD used random primer 5'-GAC CGC TTG T-3', genetic similarity from different breeds was appeared the higher genetic similarity value of Korean cattle and Charolais than that of Holstein between Korean cattle and Charolais by UPGMA.

  • Radiation absorption parameters of carbon fiber panel were measured in comparison to acrylic panel. $30{\times}30cm$ sized 2mm thick carbon fiber panel and identical sized 6mm thick acrylic panel were placed in tray holder position and 0cm, 5cm, 10cm from surface of phantom. Radiation field size was $10{\times}10cm$. 50MU of 4MV photon was irradiated to the phantom with dose rate of 300MU/min. Source-to-phantom distance was 120cm. Radiation dose was measured with 0.6cc Farmer-type ionization chamber with 1cm build-up. Measurement was repeated thrice and normalization was done to the dose of the open field. Radiation transmission rate of carbon fiber panel is approximately 1% lower than acrylic panel of equivalent thickness. However, considering the strength of the material, transmission rate is higher for carbon fiber panel. Although carbon fiber panel increases the radiation dose when attached to the surface for about 2%, it normalizes the radiation dose to 97-99% of irradiated dose which could have been lowered to as much as 5-7.5% with acrylic panel. As carbon fiber panel is stronger than acrylic panel, radiation fixation device could be made thinner and thus lighter and furthermore, with increased radiation transmission. This in turn makes carbon fiber more ideal material for radiation fixation device over conventionally used acrylic.

The result of the study is as following. Regarding the length/width ratio of barley grain, black naked barley was the biggest; while amethyst barley was the smallest. Moisture content of barley grain was in the range of 54.96~71.74%. The saccharification liquid pH was in the range of 5.40~5.63 and the soluble solid content was in the range of 15.37~18.73 brix %. The saccharification liquid of sikhye made of tetrastichum waxy barley had the highest soluble solid content; while the saccharification liquid of sikhye made of black naked barley had the lowest soluble solid content. Reducing sugar was in the range of 4.35~7.42 mg/ 100 g; at which tetrastichum waxy barley sikhye had the highest reducing sugar while black naked barley sikhye had the lowest reducing sugar. The result of reducing sugar was similar to the result of soluble solid content. Black naked barley had low Lightness, redness and yellowness in its cooked rice grain and saccharification liquid. The result of barley sikhye characteristics was as following. Black naked barley had the strongest fullness while tetrastichum waxy barley had the weakest fullness. Black naked barley had strong feeling after swallowing the barley rice grain; while tetrastichum waxy barley had weak feeling after swallowing the barley rice grain. The result of feeling after swallowing the barley rice grain had correlation with fullness. The result of preference test was as following. naked waxy barley sikhye and naked barley sikhye had best outlook. In the smell, amethyst barley sikhye was the best. regarding texture, naked barley sikhye and naked waxy barley sikhye had high preference. In overall preference, naked barley sikhye was the best. Like above, there were differences in quality in sikhyes dependent on the variety of barley. In particular, tetrastichum waxy barley and naked barley will be able to increase the amount of sweetness without malt production during sikhye.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the distribution of the variables on the quality of life and the determinants of the sexual attitude and behavior of the unmarried female workers. This study was surveyed to the 306 unmarried women who worked in the small and medium scale industries in Kyungin area and analyzed the respondent's knowledge of sex, sexual behavior, health behavior, health status, satisfaction of working condition and recognition of working environment. The result of this study could be summarized as follows: The respondent's age are mostly early of twenties and their education level are high school and more. They recognize that their health condition is not so good but they hardly try to improve health condition. They think that their working condition are mostly unsatisfied and they also believe that they expose themselves to the toxic working environment. Although their knowledge of sex are low they have few chances for the education of sex and family planning. Their attitude of premarital sex are conservertive but the rate of approval of living together before marriage are high and the rate of premarital sex is around 15 percent. The premarital sex behavior are positively related with family size, living condition, knowledge of sex and working period but the sex experiences are negatively related with working period and knowledge of sex. As a result we suggest that the sex education and consultative program are necessary for improving the quality of life of the unmarried working women in small and medium scale industries.

  • The effects of ginseng saponins and some phenolic acids on the in vitro biosynthesis of prostaglandins was examined in order to identify the role of some ginseng components on the regulaion of arachidonic acid metabolism. The productions of prostaglandin $E_2(PGE_2).$ prostaglandin $F_2{\alpha}(PGF_2{\alpha}).$ thromboxane $B_2(TxB_2)$ and 6-keto-prostaglandin $F_1{\alpha}(6-keto-PGF_1{\alpha})$ from $[^3H]-arachidonic$ acid were evaluated with rabbit kidney microsome. human platelet homogenate and bovine aortic microsome. The amounts of the total cyclooxy-genase products from arachidonic acid did't show significant changes in the presence of ginseng saponins. Panaxadiol. panaxatriol and all of the ginsenosides used in these experiments reduced the formation of $TxB_2.$ while increased the $6-keto-PGF_1{\alpha}$ production dose dependently. Ginseng saponins did't inhibit the ADP($10{\mu}M$) induced platelet aggregation. but sodium arachidonate (0.5 mM) induced platelet aggregation. but sodium arachidonate (0.5 mM) induced platelet aggregation was signiticantly inhibited. These findings suggest that ginseng saponins seem to playa role in the regulation of the arachidonate metabolism. probably by affecting the divergent biosynthetic pathway of prostaglandins from endoperoxide.

  • The luminescence properties of $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As/In_{0.5}Al_{0.5}As$ multiple quantum wells (MQWs) grown on $In_{0.5}Al_{0.5}As$ buffer layers have been studied by using photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL measurements. A$1-{\mu}m$ thick $In_{0.5}Al_{0.5}As$ buffer layers were deposited on a 500 nm thick GaAs layer, followed by the deposition of the InGaAs/InAlAs MQWs. In order to investigate the effects of InAlAs buffer layer on the optical properties of the MQWs, four different temperature sequences are used for the growth of InAlAs buffer layer. The growth temperature for InAlAs buffer layer was varied from 320^{\circ}C to $580^{\circ}C$. The MQWs consist of three $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}$As wells with different well thicknesses (2.5 nm, 4.0 nm, and 6.0 nm thick) and 10 nm thick $In_{0.5}Al_{0.5}$As barriers. The PL spectra from the MQWs with InAlAs layer grown at lower temperature range ($320-580^{\circ}C$) showed strong peaks from 4 nm QW and 6 nm QW. However, for the MQWs with InAlAs buffer grown at higher temperature range ($320-480^{\circ}C$), the PL spectra only showed a strong peak from 6 nm QW. The strongest PL intensity was obtained from the MQWs with InAlAs layer grown at the fixed temperature of $480^{\circ}C$, while the MQWs with buffer layer grown at higher temperature from $530^{\circ}C$ to $580^{\circ}C$ showed the weakest PL intensity. From the emission wavelength dependence of PL decay times, the fast and slow decay times may be related to the recombination of carriers in the 4 nm QW and 6 nm QW, respectively. These results indicated that the growth temperatures of InAlAs layer affect the structural and optical properties of the MQWs.

  • The effects tea beverages (TBs) prepared from powdered green tea (Gt), oolong tea (Ot), black tea (Bt), or pure tea (Pt) with lemon, orange, grenadine etc on cadmium toxicity in rats were investigated Sensory evaluations of the TBs are better than those of each water extracted teas. Cadmium (50 ppm) was administered to experimental rats fed a basic diet, or a diet with various TBs (15% w/v), for 5 weeks. Although body weight gains, feed intakes, and fecal weights in all Cd-treated groups were lower than those in the normal control group (NC), feed efficiency ratio, urine volumes, liver weights, and kidney weights did not differ significantly between groups. The serum ALT and AST levels in the Cd-treated control group (Cd-Co) were higher than those in the NC animals. Serum ALT and AST levels in all Cd-treated rats fed TB-supplemented diets were lower than in animals of the Cd-Co group. Tibia and femur weights in Cd-Co animals were lower than those in NC rats. Tibia and femur weights in Cd-treated rats fed TB-supplemented diets were higher than those in Cd-Co animals. There were no between-group differences in tibia lengths; animals in the NC and TB-supplemented diet groups showed femur lengths longer than those of Cd-Co rats. Although the contents of crude ash and cadmium in the femurs of Cd-Co mts was markedly higher than in the femurs of NC animals, the cadmium content in femurs of Cd-Co rats was significantly lower than that in the femurs of NC animals. The changes in mineral levels caused by Cd administration were alleviated by every TB-supplemented diet tested Whereas fecal calcium excretion by Cd-Co animals was significantly higher than that of NC rats, calcium excretion by Cd-treated rats fed TB-supplemented diets was significantly lower than that of Cd-Co animals. Fecal cadmium excretion by all Cd-treated rats fed TB-supplemented diets was significantly higher than that of Cd-Co animals. In conclusion, this study provides experimental evidence that various TBs may regulate cadmium-induced organ toxicity by reducing cadmium accumulation in tissues through the mechanism of increasing the fecal excretion of cadmium.
