  • A new continuously variable transmission for bicycles(B-CVT) is developed by using a traction drive mechanism having inner and outer spherical rotors. The B-CVT has high power efficiency, large torque capacity, improved drivability and good packageability. The ratio change mechanism for the B-CVT is very simple, in contrast with other traction drive CVTs. After completing a conceptual design, a performance analysis and a detail design, a prototype of the B-CVT has been manufactured. The prototype has rated power of 100 watts, pedal speed of 6 rad/s and an overall speed ratio of 1.0-4.0. A bench test and an actual bicycle test have been performed to verify the practicability of the B-CVT.

  • In order to investigate the quality characteristics of Prunus persica Batsch var. davidiana Max. preserved in sugar, the quality characteristics were examined by dividing them into four groups: PS-A (P. persica preserved in sugar mixed with sucrose and oligosaccharides at a ratio of 100:0, w/w), PS-B (P. persica preserved in sugar mixed with sucrose and oligosaccharides at a ratio of 60:40, w/w), PS-C (P. persica preserved in sugar mixed with sucrose and oligosaccharides at a ratio of 40:60, w/w) and PS-D (P. persica preserved in sugar mixed with sucrose and oligosaccharides at a ratio of 0:100, w/w). The results were as follows: pH levels and soluble solid contents of PS-D sample were lower than those of the others, however total acidity value were higher. In case of Hunter's value, the 'L', 'a' and 'b' values of all samples were affected by addition of oligosaccharides. No great difference occurred among samples in reducing sugar contents. Organic acid content was significantly decreased with the lower addition of sucrose. The predominating organic acid components analyzed in all samples were lactic acid 156.15 g/100 g, tartaric acid 72.75 g/100 g and citric acid 32.90 g/100 g. The highest contents of total phenol and flavonoid, and DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity were $10.79{\pm}0.55mg\;GAE/mL$, $8.71{\pm}0.06mg\;CE/mL$ and 71.8%, 71.0% for PS-D, respectively. The results of this study indicated the use of oligosaccharides could increase the quality and antioxidant potentials of P. persica preserved in sugar.

  • In this study, the effects and the interactions of water content, SP-binder ratio, and water-binder ratio on the workability performance of concrete were investigated. The experiments were designed based on flatted simplex-centroid experiment design modified from standard simplex-centroid one. The data gotten from the design was used to build the concrete slump model using neural networks. Research reported in this paper shows that a small number of slump experiments can be performed and meaningful data obtained with the experiment design. Such data would be suitable for building slump model using neural networks. The trained network can be satisfactorily used for exploring the effects of the components and their interactions on the workability of concrete. It has found that a high water content and a high SP/b ratio is essential for high workability, but achieving this by increasing these parameters will not in itself guarantee high workability. The w/b played a very important role in producing workability and had rather profound effects; however, the medium value about 0.4 is the best w/b to reach high slump without too much effort on trying to find the appropriate water content and SP/b.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of a 12 tons capacity circulating concurrent flow rice dryer. An actual scale dryer with the capacity of 12 tons was developed to obtain a faster drying rate of 0.8~1.2%(w.b.)/h, while maintaining a lower drying energy consumption of 5,000 kJ/kg-water and achieving a drying quality that was comparable to a conventional cross-flow rice dryer. The Test-1 was conducted at $110^{\circ}C\;-\;20\;cmm/m^2$ and the Test-2 was conducted at $120-110-100-90^{\circ}C\;-\;20\;cmm/m^2$ under the same conditions as Test-1. In Test-1, the drying rate, drying energy consumption and crack ratio were 0.98 %(w.b.)/h, 4,573 kJ/kg-water and 3.2%, respectively. In Test-2, the drying rate, drying energy consumption and crack ratio were 0.74 %(w.b.)/h, 4,790 kJ/kg-water and 4.0%, respectively. The results of these tests demonstrated that this concurrent-flow dryer reached the desired drying rate, drying energy consumption and crack ratio.

  • In this study, in order to find the improvement effect of metakaolin for using improvement of strength in concrete structures, it is investigated the diffusion coefficient of chloride ions and adiabatic temperature rise test. As a result, due to the mixing of metakaolin, it has been confirmed reducing diffusion coefficient of chloride ions and could prevent down of slump for use of adding fly ash. Therefore, ensuring resistance to chloride ion penetration into concrete, it is possible to enlarge the W/B ratio and reduce the adiabatic temperature rise by mixing of metakaolin. So, it is confirmed that the durability of concrete structures is increased.

  • In this paper, the mix design of the super flowing concrete is described with respcet to basic concept, confined water ratio($\beta_p$), volume ratio of water-binder(w/b), volume ratio of fine aggregates($S_r$) and coarse aggregates($G_v$). The primary purposes of this study are to evaluate the effects of cementitious materials(fly ash, slag cement, portland cement), mixing factors ($\beta_p$, w/b, $S_r$, $G_v$)., and to propose the mix design method of the super flowing concrete. As results of this study, confined water ratio($\beta_p$) of cementitious materials is very high (0.99~1.1), and then the ranges of the optimum mixing factors to be satisfied with the super flowing concrete are $S_r$ 47$\ell$ 2%, $G_v$ 52$\ell$ 1%.

  • This paper presents the fundamental study on rational manufacture of Ultra High Strength(VHS) concrete using industrial by-products as like silica fume, slag and fly ash. In this study, we had tested various mixing cases to manufacture the UHS concrete(target compressive strength : over $1,000kgf/cm^2$) which is easily workable (target slump flow : $60{\pm}10cm$). The main variables are studied: 1) to find the optimum replacement ratio of mineral admixture. 2) to find a rational water-binder ratio and a proper binder content. 3) to find the method for reduction of slump loss. From the test results, it is concluded that the rational mix design can be made by using 40% slag, 10% silica fume. We found that compressive strength of UHS concrete increases according to decreasing W/B ratio but in W/B ratio 18~20%, the difference is vague and the compressive strength does not necessarily increase according to increasing binder content over 700kg.

  • This paper suggests an efficient method of protection ratio calculation and shows some results applicable to frequency coordination in microwave(M/W) relay system networks, and the net filter discrimination(NFD) associated with Tx spectrum mask and overall Rx filter characteristics has been examined to obtain the adjacent channel protection ratio. The protection ratio comprises several factors such as C/N of modulation scheme, noise-to-interference ratio, multiple interference allowance, fade margins of multi-path and rain attenuation, and NFD. According to computed results for 6.7 GHz, 64-QAM, and 60 km at BER $10^{-6}$, fade margin and co-channel protection ratio are 41.1 and 75.2 dB, respectively. NFD for channel bandwidth of 40 MHz reveals 28.9 dB at the first adjacent channel, which results in adjacent channel protection ratio of 46.3 dB. In addition, NFD and protection ratio for different systems with channel bandwidth 20 and 40 MHz have been investigated to be used for actual M/W networks. The proposed method provides some merits of an easy calculation, systematic extension, and applying the same concept to frequency coordination in millimeter wave relay system networks.

  • The use of blast-furnace slag (BFS) in making not only normal concrete but also high-performance concrete has several advantages with respect to workability, long-term strength and durability. However, slag concrete tends to show more shrinkage than normal concrete, especially autogenous shrinkage. High autogenous shrinkage would result in severe cracking if they are not controlled properly. Therefore, in order to minimize the shrinkage stress and to ensure the service life of concrete structures, the autogenous shrinkage behavior of concrete containing BFS should be understood. In this study, small prisms made of concrete with water-binder (cement+BFS) ratio (W/B) ranging from 0.27 to 0.42 and BFS replacement level of $0\%$, $30\%$, and $50\%$, were prepared to measure the autogenous shrinkage. Based on the test results, thereafter, material constants in autogenous shrinkage prediction model were determined. In particular, an effective autogenous shrinkage defined as the shrinkage that contributes to the stress development was introduced. Moreover, an estimation formula of the 28-day effective autogenous shrinkage was proposed by considering various W/B's. Test results showed that autogenous shrinkage increased with replacement level of BFS at the same W/B. Interestingly, the increase of autogenous shrinkage is dependent on the W/B at the same content of BFS; the lower W/B, the smaller increasing rate. In concluding, it is necessary to use the combination of other mineral admixtures such as shrinkage reducing admixture or to perform sufficient moisture curing on the construction site in order to reduce the autogenous shrinkage of BFS concrete.

  • We powders were synthesized from W powders in differnet particle sizes by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis process (SHS) using a chemical furnace. The effects of the mole ratio of chemical fuel content, pellet thickness and the mole ratio between carbon and tungsten (C/W Ratio) on synthesis were investigated with the tungsten powders have different particle size each other. Compositional and structural characterization of these powders was carried out by scanning electron microscope (SEM0 and x-ray diffractometer. Powder characterization was carried out by the measurement of particle size distribution with laser-particle size analyzer. The amounts of WC obtained by SHS process depend very much on the particle size of tungsten powder and heat contents given in a product, i.e. as the particle size of W powder is smaller, the amounts of WC produced increase. Also the more heat contents is given, the more amounts of WC increase. By optimizing the synthesis conditions, it is possible to fabricate WC powders which have little secondary phases (W2C, C).
