Lactic acid (LA) fermentation by Lactobacillus salivarius ATCC 11741 immobilized on loofa sponge (LS) was evaluated. To increase the surface area of LS for cell immobilization, $H_2O_2$ and chitosan were introduced as surface modifying reagents. Four chitosans of different molecular weights were separately coated on LS. All experiments were conducted in shaking flask mode at 100 rpm rotating speed and $37^{\circ}C$ with 5% $CaCO_3$ as a pH regulating agent. The effects of initial glucose concentration were investigated in the range of 20-100 g/l on LA fermentation by free cells. The results indicate that the maximum concentration of LA was produced with 50 g/l glucose concentration. The immobilized cell system produced 1.5 times higher concentration than free cells for 24 h of fermentation. Moreover, immobilized cells can shorten the fermentation time by 2-fold compared with free cells at the same level of LA concentration. At 1% (w/v) chitosan in 2% (v/v) acetic acid, the Yp/s and productivities of various molecular weights of chitosans were insignificantly different. Repeated batch fermentations showed 5 effective recycles with Yp/s and productivity in the range of 0.55-0.85 and 0.90-1.20 g/l.h, respectively. It is evident that immobilization of L. salivarius onto LS permits reuse of the system under these fermentation conditions. Scanning electron micrographs indicated that there were more intact cells on the chitosan-treated LS than on the untreated LS, thus confirming the effectiveness of the LS-chitosan combination when being utilized as a promising immobilization carrier for LA fermentation.

The objective of this study was to optimize the slurry contents and salt concentrations for ethanol production from hydrolysates of the seaweed Eucheuma spinosum. A monosaccharide concentration of 44.2 g/l as 49.6% conversion of total carbohydrate of 89.1 g/l was obtained from 120 g dw/l seaweed slurry. Monosaccharides from E. spinosum slurry were obtained by thermal acid hydrolysis and enzymatic hydrolysis. Addition of activated carbon at 2.5% (w/v) and the adsorption time of 2 min were used in subsequent adsorption treatments to prevent the inhibitory effect of HMF. The adsorption surface area of the activated carbon powder was 1,400-1,600 m2/g and showed selectivity to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) from monosaccharides. Candida tropicalis KCTC 7212 was cultured in yeast extract, peptone, glucose, and high-salt medium, and exposed to 80, 90, 100, and 110 practical salinity unit (psu) salt concentrations in the lysates. The 100 psu salt concentration showed maximum cell growth and ethanol production. The ethanol fermentations with activated carbon treatment and use of C. tropicalis acclimated to a high salt concentration of 100 psu produced 17.9 g/l of ethanol with a yield (YEtOH) of 0.40 from E. spinosum seaweed.
A 570 cm-long sediment core was retrieved at $9^{\circ}57^{\prime}N$ and $131^{\circ}42^{\prime}W$ in 5,080 m water depth from the northeast equatorial Pacific and its stratigraphy was established with $^{10}Be/^9Be$ and paleomagnetic measurements. Successive AF demagnetization reveals eight geomagnetic field reversals. In the reference geologic time scale, the eight reversal events correspond to an age of about 4.5 Ma. However, $^{10}Be/^9Be$-based age yields 9.5 Ma at a depth of 372 cm. Such a large discrepancy in determined ages is attributed to an extremely low sedimentation rate, 0.4 mm/kyr on average, of the study core and resultant loss or smoothing of geomagnetic fields. The composite age model reveals a wide range in the sedimentation rate - varying from 0.1 to 2.4 mm/kyr. However, the sedimentation rate shows systematic variation depending on sedimentary facies (Unit II and III), which suggests that each lithologic unit has a unique provenance and transport mechanism. At depths of 110-80 cm with a sedimentation rate of about 0.1 mm/kyr, ancient geomagnetic field reversal events of at least a 1.8 Myr time span have not been recorded, which indicates the probable existence of a hiatus in the interval. Such a sedimentary hiatus is observed widely in the deep-sea sediments of the NE equatorial Pacific.
We investigated Pt and $RuO_2$ as a bottom electrode and PZT thin film for ferroelectric applications. XRD examination shows that a mixed phase of (111) and (200) Pt peak for the temperature ranged from RT to $200^{\circ}C$, and a preferred (111) orientation for the substrate temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. From the XRD and AFM results, we recommend the substrate temperature of $300^{\circ}C$, 80 W for the Pt bottom electrode growth. From the study of an oxygen partial pressure from 0 to 50%, we learned that only Ru metal was grown with $0{\sim}5%$, a mixed phase of Ru and $RuO_2$ for $10{\sim}40%$, pure $RuO_2$ at 50%. Having optimized the bottom electrode growth conditions, we employed two step process in PZT film capacitor: PZT film growth at the low substrate temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ and then post RTA anneal treatments. PZT films were randomly oriented on $RuO_2$ and (110) preferentially oriented on Pt electrode. Leakage current density of PZT film demonstrated two to three orders higher for $RuO_2$ bottom electrode. From C-V results we observed a dielectric constant of PZT film higher than 1200. This paper presents the optimized process conditions of the bottom electrodes and properties of PZT thin films on these electrodes.

For the ultimate manufacture of vinegar with watermelon juice, we examined the preliminarily alcoholic fermentation of watermelon juice using Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. ellipsoideus and Kluyveromyces fragilis. The juice contained 3.2% total reducing sugar by the Somogyi-Nelson method. Strains of yeast culture, pH, temperature and concentration of sugar in the juice were important factors affecting alcoholic fermentation. Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. ellipsoideus produced 5.3% alcohol from the juice fortified with 12% glucose under the conditions of pH 5.73 and $27^{\circ}C$ for 8 days. Generally, small quantities of various salts and N-sources affected little the alcoholic fermentation of the juice. The sterilization of the juice by autoclaving improved efficiency of fermentation than that by $SO_2$ sterilization. Determination of alcohol was carried out by the gas chromatographic method using Chromosorb W: Carbowax as packing material.

At the onset of corrosion of steel in concrete, hydrogen ions usually evolve in the process of electrochemical reaction, thereby decreasing the pH of the pore solution, which can be buffered by cement hydration products, as being representatively illustrated by calcium hydroxide. Hence, a fall in the pH is dependent on properties of cement hydration (i.e. hydration products and degree of hydration). The present study tested acid neutralization capacity (ANC) of cementitious binders of OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement), 30% PFA(Pulverized Fuel Ash), 60% GGBS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag), 10% SF(Silica Fume) to quantify the resistance of cement matrix to a pH fall. Cement pastes were cast at 0.4 of a free W/C ratio with 1.5% chlorides by weight of binder in cast. Powder samples obtained crushed and ground specimen after 200 days of curing were diluted in still water combined with different levels of 1M nitric acid solution, ranging from 0.5 to 20 mol/kg. Then, the pH of diluted solution was monitored until any further change in the pH did not take place. It was seen that the pH of the diluted solution gradually decreased as the molar amount of nitric acid increased. At some particular values of the pH, however, a decrease in the pH was marginal, which can be expressed in the peak resistances to a pH fall in the ANC curve. The peaks occurred at the variations in the pH, depending on binder type, but commonly at about 12.5 in the pH, indicate a resistance of precipitated calcium hydroxide. The measurement of water soluble chloride at the end of test showed that the amount of free chloride was significantly increased at the pH corresponding to the peaks in the ANC curve, which may reflect the adsorption of hydration products to chlorides.

The flow boiling heat transfer of water was experimentally investigated on plain and sintered microporous surfaces in a mini-channel. The effects of microporous coating on flow boiling heat transfer of subcooled water were investigated in a 300 mm long mini-channel with a cross section of $20{\times}10mm^2$. The test section has sufficiently long entrance length of 300 mm which provides a fully-developed flow before the channel inlet. The bottom side of the channel was heated by a copper block assembled with a high-density cartridge heater and other sides of the channel were insulated. The microporous surface was fabricated by sintering copper particles with the average particle size of $50{\mu}m$ on the top side of the copper block. Heat transfer measurement was conducted at the mass flux of $208kg/m^2s$ and the heat flux up to $500kW/m^2$. Microporous coated surface showed an earlier boiling incipience compared with plain surface regardless of the mass flux. Microporous coating were significantly attributed to local wall temperature and local heat transfer coefficient for flow boiling.
Corrosion has been around for all of recorded history. Cathodic protection is the electrical solution to the corrosion problem. Corrosion is not exactly a new topic. It has been around since the beginning of time. Corrosion is simply the loss of material resulting from current leaving a metal, following through a medium, and returning to the metal at a different point. Corrosion takes many forms and has various names, such as oxidation, rust, chemical, and bacteria action. Regardless of the agent, all corrosion is the result of electrical current flow. Various methods are used to treat corrosion or to try to prevent ti. Some of these include chemical treatment. coatings, and electrical current. Especially, proper impressed current can stop corrosive action on the protected surface. In this article, we introduce the Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) Control and monitoring system developed by ourselves. The ICCP system is composed of a power supply, anode, reference electrode and controller. The main issue is to control the current flow on the desired value such that it is possible to force a metal to be more negative(cathodic) than the natural state. From the this process, we can achieve the cathodic protection. Of course, in the developed system, the necessary functions are possessed, such as remote control, monitoring of system fault detection etc. Some experimental results show the system performance and usefulness.
The present study attempted to compare the behavioral patterns and attitudes of American and Korean female students toward apparel ads in magazines in relation to their physical self-concept. The study used a self-administered questionnaire. The sample consisted of 730 female students majoring in the fields related to clothing and textiles : 310 American students at six colleges and universities located in the west, northeast and southwest parts of the U.S., and 412 Korean students at four Seoul-based universities. Likert scales were used for most measures with 1=never or very unimportant and 5 =always or very important. Physical self-concept was measured on the basis of W. S. Jung's Standardized Self-concept Test and Tennessee Self-concept Scale. Surreys were back translated for validity. Percentage, t-test, Contingency Tables and Chi-square were used for the analysis of the data. Results are as follows : (1) Korean students read more magazines than U.S. students, however, Vogue was the most popular for both groups. (2) Those with a high sense of Physical self-concept read more magazines. for both countries. (3) American students'attitudes toward apparel ads in magazines were similar, regardless of whether their sense of physical self-concept was high or low. For Koreans, those with higher sense of physical self-concept showed greater interest in magazine ads, consulted magazines for fashion trends, found ads more useful, and more often expressed satisfaction with the ads, than the lower self-concept group. (4) Korean students cited a lack of information in ads while American students felt body types of models were unrealistic. Both Koreans and Americans in the higher self-concept group expressed a greater level of dissatisfaction with apparel ads in magazines. (5) Advertisers should attempt to again a deeper understanding of the socio-psychological characteristics of their readership as self-concept appears to be related to several magazine readership attitudes and behaviors. Magazines targeting Americans might consider the importance of coordination and merchandising. Apparel ads targeting Korean should consider the importance of company ads.
For the study on the Latin American culture reflected in fashion designs since 2000, the applications of Latin American culture shown in the four major collections from 2000 S/S to 2005 F/W (110 pieces) and some African designers' collections (157 pieces) have been analyzed and compared in three categories - forms, patterns and accessories. First, in the formal application of traditional clothes, the traditional elements of Indio culture are utilized in both the four major collections (76.8%) and the Latin American designers' collection (77.1%). Quechquemitl, the traditional Indio clothes are utilized in various forms in the four major collections, while the Latin American designers adopt various forms of traditional clothes, such as quechquemitl, camisa and pollera. Second, in the textile design, the patterns from Indio's traditional textile design are utilized in both the four major collections (68.7%) and the Latin American designers's collections (5.6%). The remarkable difference between the Latin American designers and the western designers is that the former like to mix the simple and primitive Indio culture with the colorful Iberian culture, and to utilize various patterns of feather, which is an important symbol in the traditional culture, expressing tradition in the modern touch. On the other hand, the western designers change the primitive and handcraft feel of Indio patterns into colorful ones, or mix the colorful Spanish-style flower patterns with primitive and passionate feel. Third, simple and handcraft feel of Indio accessories are utilized in modern fashion in both the four major collections and the Latin American designers' collections. The most remarkable difference between the two group of designers' collections is that various feather patterns are used in Latin American designers' collection, while the accessories reminding of relics of Maya and Inca are widely used in the four major collections.
