  • This paper deals with the experimental study on the flow characteristics in straight flow can type combustor which has been used for high pressure ratio gas turbine combustor. The author has investigated the effects of swirl number and secondary air hole arrays in axial position on the flow characteristics by adopting the tuft method and 5-Hole Pilot Tube. From these experiments, as the swirl number increases, the results obtained is that the area of recirculation zone becomes wide and the position of vortex-core region approaches to the near of fuel nozzle in the model combustor. The most favourable penetration is obtained when secondary air jet is introduced through the air holes distributed in the form of paralled two rows in axial position of model combustor.

  • The combustion instability in a model dump combustor with an exhaust nozzle and the possibility of combustion control using a loudspeaker to these instabilities were studied. By changing inlet velocity, combustor length and equivalence ratio, dynamic pressure signals and flame structures were simultaneously taken. Because inlet velocity and combustor length affect the life time of vortex in the dump combustor, the results showed that as the combustor length increased and the inlet velocity decreased, the instability frequency decreased and the maximum power spectral density of the dynamic pressure generally decreased. Also, instability frequency and maximum power spectral density of the dynamic pressure increased with the increment of equivalence ratio. From the data of close-loop control, the optimum time-delay control using a loudspeaker was confirmed to be able to reduce the vortex shedding induced from the mixed acoustic-convective mode combustion instability.

  • Axisymmetric shear layers around a free jet is forced by co-flowing and counter-flowing secondary jets from/to an annular tube around the jet nozzle. The jet potential core extends far downstream with co-flowing secondary jets due to inhibited vortex developing and pairing. For counter-flowing cases, the axisymmetric shear layer around the jet transits from convective instability to absolute instability for velocity ratios R=1.3~l.65 for the uniform velocity jets. Consequently, the jet potential core length increases and the turbulence level in the jet core is reduced significantly. The jets are controlled better with extension collars attached to the outer nozzle exit because the annular secondary flow is guided well by the extension collars. For the vectoring of jet, the annular tube around the jet is divided in two parts and the only one part is used for suction. The half suction makes the different shear layer around the jet and vectoring the jet by Coanda effect. The vectoring and turbulent components are varied significantly by the suction ratio. The experiments are carried out to investigate the characteristics of forced free jets using flow visualization, velocity and turbulence measurements.

  • A study was performed to investigate the characteristics of two-phase jet injected into subsonic cross-flow using the external mixed gas blast two-phase nozzle. The shadowgraph method was adopted for the cross-flow jet visualization and PDPA system was used to measure droplet size, velocity, and volume flux. The atomization of two-phase jet is initially determined according to gas to liquid mass flow-rate ratio and the Reynolds number of cross-flows. The highest penetration trajectories of two-phase jet injected into cross-flow are governed by the momentum ratio at subsonic cross-flow. As GLR of two-phase jet injected into cross-flow increases, the droplet size decreases and the distribution area of volume flux increases. The distribution of volume flux that influenced by the counter vortex pair at the downstream of cross-flow is symmetric in shape of horseshoe.

  • Endwall losses contribute significantly to the overall losses in modern turbomachinery, especially when aerodynamic airfoil load and pressure ratio are increased. Hence, reducing the extend and intensity of the secondary flow structures helps to enhance overall efficiency. From the large range of viable approaches, a promising combination positioning and height of endwall contouring was chosen. The objective of this study is to document the three-dimensional flow in a turbine cascade in terms of streamwise vorticity, total pressure loss distribution and static pressure distribution on the endwall and blade surface and to propose an appropriate positioning and height of the endwall contouring which show best secondary, overall loss reduction among the simulated endwall. The flow through the gas turbine were numerically analyzed using three dimensional Navier-Stroke equations with a commercial CFD code ANSYS CFX-10. The result shows that the overall loss is reduced near the flat endwall rather than contoured endwall, and the case of contoured endwall installed at 30% from leading edge with height of 25% for span showed best performance.

  • The three-dimensional numerical study of a water jet pump was carried out to investigate the relationship between performance and the geometric variables of nozzle space, area ratio, and throat length. Because of the complex geometry, the multiblock technique was adopted for numerical analysis and a special treatment for transferring data from each of the block interfaces was implemented in order to maintain the conserved properties. To validate the present code, flow passing through a square duct with a 90-deg bend was computed, our results show good accordance with other experimental and computational results. The numerical simulation was done with the flow of the water jet pump having a 180-deg bend in order to calculate the performance at different operating conditions. The performance of the water jet pump can be improved by study of parameters which clarify the relations between the geometric variables and the flow characteristics of vortex strength and location.

  • The numerical analysis of a waterjet propulsion system was performed to provide detail understanding of complicated flow phenomena including interactions of intake duct, rotor, stator, and contracted discharge nozzle. The incompressible RANS equations were solved on moving multiblocked grid system. To handle interface boundary between rotor and stator, the sliding multiblock method was applied. The numerical results were compared with experiments and good agreement was obtained. The complicated viscous flow features of the waterjet, such as secondary flow inside the intake duct, the recovery of axial flow by the role of the stator, and tip and hub vortex, etc. were well analyzed by the present simulation. The performance of thrust and torque was also predicted.

  • Mechanism of combustion frequencies occurring during combustion is experimentally investigated in model combustor with V-gutter flameholder. this combustor has a long duct shape with a cross section area of $40{\times}40\;mm$. The v-gutter type flameholder with 14mm width is mounted at the bottom of combustor. Kerosene and methane were used as fuel, and these fuel were injected transversely into air crossflow. It is found that combustion frequencies were considered as 1L longitudinal mode caused by combustor geometry and vortex shedding mode of flameholder. And fuel phase effect and nozzle effect were also observed in the low frequency range.

  • The objective of this study is to obtain the instability characteristics of the plane jet impinging on circular cylinder associated with the cylinder-tone. It is found that the characteristics depends upon he ratio of the cylinder diameter to the nozzle width, D/h, and the jet velocity. When the ratio is oderate the cylinder-tone is similar to the edge-tone. With increase of the ratio, its characteristics ecomes similar to that of the plate-tone in which only the high-speed tone associated with turbulent et is generated. When D/h 〈1. the frequency range, especially the lower limit of frequency, is ignificantly influenced by the cylinder diameter. At around D/h = 1/2, while low speed tones are nduced with the antisymmetric mode of instability and affected by the vortex shedding from the ylinder, high-speed tones are generated, at first, with the symmetric mode of instability. and then, ith antisymmetric mode, as the jet velocity increases.
