Local and overall heat transfer characteristics of fin-flat tube heat exchangers with and without vortex generators were investigated. Local heat transfer coefficients were measured with the heat exchanger model using naphthalene sublimation technique. In case of a fin-flat tube heat exchanger without vortex generators, only the horseshoe vortices formed around tubes augment the heat transfer. On the other hand, longitudinal vortices created artificially by vortex generators additionally enhance heat transfer in case of a fin-flat tube heat exchanger with vortex generators. Overall heat transfer coefficients were measured with the prototypes of the fin-flat tube heat exchanger with and without vortex generators in a wind tunnel and results were compared with those of a fin-circular tube heat exchanger with wavy fin. Friction losses for heat exchangers were also measured and compared. The fin-flat tube heat exchanger with vortex generators is found to be more effective than the fin-circular tube heat exchanger with wavy fin.

The computational prediction method of speed performance for a ship with vortex generators is proposed. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation has been solved together with the application of Reynolds stress turbulence model. The computations are carried out under identical conditions of the experimental method, i.e., towing and self-propulsion calculations without and with vortex generators. The speed performance in full scale is obtained through analyzing the computational results in model scale according to the revised model-ship performance analysis method of ITTC'78 with considering the vortex generators into account. The characteristics of resistance, self-propulsion and wake characteristics on the propeller plane are investigated. The proposed computational prediction clearly shows the effect of vortex generators and can be applicable to the design tool for vortex generators.
In this study the optimization of plate-fin type heat sink with vortex generator for thermal stability is conducted numerically. To acquire the optimal design variables, the CFD and mathematical optimization are integrated. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method. The optimization is carried out by means of the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method. The results show that when the temperature rise is less than 40 K, the optimal design variables are as follows; $B_1=2.584mm$, $B_2=1.741mm$, and t = 7.914 mm. Comparing with the initial design, the temperature rise is reduced by 4.2 K, while the pressure drop is increased by 9.43 Pa. The Pareto optimal solutions are also presented between the pressure drop and the temperature rise.
This paper represents a numerical study of the flow field due to the interactions between a pair of vortices produced by vortex generators in a rectangular channel flow. In order to analyze longitudinal vortices induced by the vortex generators, the pseudo-compressibility method is introduced into the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Strokes equations of a 3-dimensional unsteady, incompressible viscous flow. A two-layer $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model is applied to a flat plate 3-dimensional turbulence boundary to predict the flow structure and turbulence characteristics of the vortices. The computational results predict accurately the vortex characteristics related to the flow field, the Reynolds shear stresses and turbulent kinetic energy. Also, in the prediction of skin friction characteristics the computational results are reasonably close to those of the experiment obtained from other researchers.
Fin-tube heat exchangers are widely used in refrigeration systems. To improve the performance of fin-tube heat exchangers, the shape of plain fin was developed in slit fin and louver fin. These pins have higher heat transfer performance as well as larger pressure drop. Recent studies of a delta winglet vortex generators(DWVG) show less heat transfer capacity than louver fin. However, the DWVG have very small pressure drop. This paper compares the performance for the plain fin and DWVG fin in terms of flow characteristics and heat transfer based on CFD analyses. The DWVG generate vortex and delayed flow separation and leads to a reduction of a wake region behind a tube. The results show that the DWVG produce improved heat transfer and reduced pressure drop compared to a plain fin. This result is opposite to the Reynolds analogy.

The flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by the interaction of a pair of vortices are studied numerically. To analyze the common flow up produced by vortex generators in a rectangular channel flow, the pseudo-compressibility viscous method is introduced into the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation for 3-dimensional unsteady, incompressible viscous flows. To predict turbulence characteristics, a two-layer $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is used on the flat plate 3-dimensional turbulence boundary The computational results predict accurately Reynolds stress, turbulent kinetic energy and flow field generated by the vortex generators. The numerical results, such as thermal boundary layers, skin friction characteristics and heat transfers, are also reasonably close to the experimental data.
This paper deals with the performance analysis and estimation of the electrical parameters of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) for hydrokinetic energy conversion applications using vortex induced vibration (VIV). The analytical solutions for the magnetic fields produced by permanent magnets (PMs) and stator winding currents are obtained using a 2D polar coordinate system and a magnetic vector potential. An analytical expression for the 2D permeance is also derived, which takes into account stator skew effects. Based on these magnetic field solutions and the 2D permeance function, electrical circuit parameters such as the backemf constant and the air-gap inductance are obtained analytically. The performances of the PMSG are investigated using the estimated electrical circuit parameters and an equivalent circuit (EC). All analytical results are validated extensively using 2D finite element (FE) analyses. Experimental measurements for parameters such as the back-emf and inductance are also presented to confirm the analyses.

In this study, the characteristics of the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop were numerically analyzed according to the axis ratio (AR), pitch, location of vortex generator, and bump phase of the tube surface about an elliptical fin-tube heat exchanger. The boundary condition for CFD analysis was decided as a tube surface temperature of 348 K and inlet air velocity of 1-5 m/s. RSM 7th turbulent model was chosen as the numerical analysis for the sensitivity level. The analysis results indicated that the AR and transverse pitch decreased whereas the heat transfer coefficient increased. On the other hand, there was little difference in the longitudinal pitch. Furthermore, the heat transfer rate was more favorable when the vortex generator was located in front of the tube. Also, the bump phase of the tube surface indicated that the pressure drop and heat transfer were more favorable with the circle type than with the serrated type.
