  • The present paper purposes a numerical evaluation of the Thai Long-Tail Boat propeller (TLTBP) performance by without and with propeller boss cap fins (PBCF) in full-scale operating straight shaft condition in the first. Next, those are applied to inclined shaft conditions. The actual TLTBP has defined an inclined shaft propeller including the high rotational speed, therefore vortex from the propeller boss and boss cap (hub vortex) have been generated very much. The PBCF designs are considered to weaken of vortex behind the propeller boss which makes the saving energy for the propulsion systems. The blade sections of PBCF developed from the original TLTBP blade shape. The integrative for the TLTBP and the PBCF is analyzed to increase the performance using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The computational results of propeller performance are thoroughly compared between without and with PBCF. Moreover, the effects of each PBCF component are computed to influence the TLTBP performance. The fluid flows around the propeller blades, propeller boss, boss cap, and vortex have been investigated in terms of pressure distribution and wake-fields to verify the increasing efficiency of propulsion systems.

  • The effect of molecular parameters on the steady vortex behaviors in the inertial viscoelastic flow past a cylinder has been investigated. FENE-CR model was considered as a constitutive equation. A recently developed iterative solution method (Kim et al., (in press)) was found to be successfully applicable to the computation of inertial viscoelastic flows. The high-resolution computations were carried out to understand the detailed flow behaviors based on the efficient iterative solution method armed with ILU(0) type pre-conditioner and BiCGSTAB method. The discrete elastic viscous split stress-G/streamline upwind Petrov Galerkin (DEVSS-G/SUPG) formulation was adopted as a stabilization method. The vortex size decreased as elasticity increases. However, the vortex enhancement was also observed in the case of large extensibility, which means that the vortex behavior is strongly dependent upon the material parameters. The longitudinal gradient of normal stress was found to retard the formation of vortex, whereas the extensional viscosity played a role in the vortex enhancement. The present results are expected to be helpful for understanding the inertial vortex dynamics of viscoelastic fluids in the flow past a confined cylinder.

  • A theoretical model on shock-vortex interaction is investigated using a numerical technique to solve Navier-Stokes equations. The shock-vortex interaction generated by this model based on the classical Rankin vortex is precisely investigated for a benchmark problem: Dosanjh and Weeks experiment. In terms of shock dynamics, the interaction is categorized to three stages: shock distortion, shock split, and shock-shock interaction. The quadrupolar structure of the sound source produced by the interaction is far supported with the present model, and the difference between experiment and theoretical model is also discussed in this paper.

  • Cavitation instabilities in turbo-machinery such as cavitation surge and rotating cavitation are usually explained by the quasi-steady characteristics of cavitation, mass flow gain factor and cavitation compliance. However, there are certain cases when it is required to take account of unsteady characteristics. As an example of such cases, cavitation surge in industrial centrifugal pump caused by backflow vortex cavitation is presented and the importance of the phase delay of backflow vortex cavitation is clarified. First, fundamental characteristics of backflow vortex structure is shown followed by detailed discussions on the energy transfer under cavitation surge in the centrifugal pump. Then, the dynamics of backflow is discussed to explain a large phase lag observed in the experiments with the centrifugal pump.

  • This study focuses on the near-field vortical structure and dynamics of coaxial jets. The characteristics of laminar flow and mixing in coaxial jets are investigated using a unsteady flow simulation. In order to analyze the geometic effects on the vortical structure, several cases of different configurations are selected for various values of the velocity ratio of inner jet to outer jet. From the result, it is confirmed that mixing is promoted by the development of vortical structure and the interaction between inner jet and outer jet. This feature is strongly related to the vortex frequency in the shear-layers. The vortex frequency depends on the velocity ratio and the lip thickness of inner nozzle, but the outer pipe length has no effect on the frequency variation.

  • Wake downstream of an object in the stratified flow has been of long-standing interest in fluid dynamics because of its similarity to geophysical flow over topographical terrains and more recently, concerns about the wake left behind a body moving through the ocean thermocline. Decades of studies of geophysical flow have unveiled that the flow downstream of obstacles in stratified flow consists of attached wake and strong internal waves, or separated, fluctuating wake and persistent late wakes, all of which depend on the flow conditions. Among unique and interesting characteristics of the stratified flow past obstacles is the generation of coherent vortex structure in the late wake far downstream of the object. Without the density stratification, the flow field downstream becomes undisturbed after relatively fast diminishing of the near wake. However, no matter how small the stratification is, the flow field downstream self-develops coherent vortex structures even after diminishing of the near wake. This paper present a computational approach to simulate the generation mechanism of the coherent vortex and analysis of the vortical structure.
