An unsteady numerical analysis has been carried out to study the strong impeller volute interaction of a centrifugal pump with six backward swept blades shrouded impeller. The numerical analysis is done by solving the three-dimensional Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes codes with standard k-${\varepsilon}$ two-equations turbulence model and wall regions are modeled with a scalable log-law wall function. The flow within the impeller passage is very smooth and following the curvature of the blade in stream-wise direction. However, the analysis shows that there is a recirculation zone near the leading edge even at design point. When the flow is discharged into volute casing circumferentially from the impeller outlet, the high velocity flow is severely distorted and formed a spiraling vortex flow within the volute casing. A spatial and temporal wake flow core development is captured dynamically and shows how the wake core diffuses. Near volute tongue region, the impeller/volute tongue strong interaction is observed based on the periodically fluctuating pressure at outlet. The results of existing analysis also proved that the pressure fluctuation periodically is due to the position of impeller blade relative to tongue.

A better understanding of tornado-induced wind loads is needed to improve the design of typical structures to resist these winds. An accurate understanding of the loads requires knowledge of near-ground tornado winds, but observations in this region are lacking. The first goal of this study was to verify how well a CFD model, when driven by far field radar observations and laboratory measurements, could capture the flow characteristics of both full scale and laboratory-simulated tornadoes. A second goal was to use the model to examine the sensitivity of the simulations to various parameters that might affect the laboratory simulator tornado. An understanding of near-ground winds in tornadoes will require coordinated efforts in both computational and physical simulation. The sensitivity of computational simulations of a tornado to geometric parameters and surface roughness within a domain based on the Iowa State University laboratory tornado simulator was investigated. In this study, CFD simulations of the flow field in a model domain that represents a laboratory tornado simulator were conducted using Doppler radar and laboratory velocity measurements as boundary conditions. The tornado was found to be sensitive to a variety of geometric parameters used in the numerical model. Increased surface roughness was found to reduce the tangential speed in the vortex near the ground and enlarge the core radius of the vortex. The core radius was a function of the swirl ratio while the peak tangential flow was a function of the magnitude of the total inflow velocity. The CFD simulations showed that it is possible to numerically simulate the surface winds of a tornado and control certain parameters of the laboratory simulator to influence the tornado characteristics of interest to engineers and match those of the field.

The velocity and turbulent intensity of the jet core are affected by the vortices around jet. By the control of vortex acoustically, we can expect the changes of the flow and heat transfer characteristics of free and impinging jets. On this paper, we studied the effects of vortex forcing. If vortex pairings are promoted by acoustic excitation, the turbulent intensity is increased and the high heat transfer coefficients are obtained at the small nozzle to plate distance. On the other hand, it has low turbulent intensity at the center of jet. However due to increase of potential core length, it is more effective at the large nozzle to plate distance. Therefore the excited frequency, especially its subharmonic frequency, has an important role to control the jet flows.

The present study numerically investigates the interaction between a free-surface and flow around a circular cylinder over a moving wall. In order to simulate the flow past the circular cylinder over a moving wall near a free-surface, this study has adopted the direct-forcing/fictitious domain (DF/FD) method with the level set method in the Cartesian coordinates. Numerical simulation is performed for a Reynolds numbers of 100 in the range of $0.25{\leq}g/D{\leq}2.00$ and $0.5{\leq}h/D{\leq}2.00$, where g/D and h/D are the gaps between the cylinder and a moving wall and the cylinder and a free-surface normalized by cylinder diameter D, respectively. According to g/D and h/D, the vortex structures have been classified into three patterns of the two-row, one-row, steady elongation. In general, both of g/D and h/D have the large values which mean the cylinder is far away from the wall and the free-surface, two-row vortex structure forms in the wake. When g/D decreases, the two-row vortex structure gradually transfers into the one-row vortex structure. When the g/D reveals the critical value below which the flow becomes steady state, resulting in the steady elongation vortex.

Unlike a slender body, vortices are shed off alternately in the wake of a blunt body. In the case of liquid flows, when the pressure falls below the vapor pressure, cavitation occurs in the vortex core and affects the formation of the vortex street. This phenomenon is of major importance in many practical cases because the alternate shedding of vortices creates imbalanced forces on the body. Hence, it is very important to determine the shedding frequency of cavitating vortices. In this paper, the unsteady cavitating flow around a two-dimensional wedge-shaped submerged body was simulated using the commercial code STAR-CCM+. A numerical investigation of the structure of cavitating vortices was performed for a model with an apex angle of $20^{\circ}C$. The results were validated by comparing them with experimental measurements carried out at a cavitation tunnel of Chungnam National University (CNU-CT). It was found that the shedding frequency of the vortex increased by up to 18%, which was strongly affected by the development of cavitation.
One of commonly physical phenomena encountered in pump sump systems in which its significant influence to the hydraulic performance of pump system plays an important role in the field of fluid engineering, is the appearance of free surface and submerged vortices. In this paper, a study of the vortices behavior and their formative mechanism of asymmetry is considered in this paper by using numerical approach. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and k-omega Shear Stress Transport turbulence model used to describe the properties of turbulent flows, in company with VOF multiphase model, are implemented by Fluent code with multi-block structured grid system. In the numerical simulation, the calculated elevation of air-water interface and vortex core contours are used to classify visually surface vortices as well as submerged vortices. It is shown that the free surface vortex is identified by the concavity of liquid region from the free surface and swirling flow at that own plane. To investigate the distinctive behavior of these vortices corresponding to each given flow rate at the same water level, some numerical testing of them are considered here in such a manner that the flow pattern of surface vortex are obtained similarly to the obtained results from experiment. Furthermore, the influence due to the change of grid refinement and the variation of depth of the concavity are also considered in this paper. From that, these influential factors will be implemented to design a good pump sump with higher performance in the future.

In the present study, an unstructured mixed mesh flow solver was used to conduct a numerical prediction of the aerodynamic performance of the S-76 rotor in hover. For the present mixed mesh methodology, the near-body flow domain was modeled by using body-fitted prismatic/tetrahedral cells while Cartesian mesh cells were filled in the off-body region. A high-order accurate weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme was employed to better resolve the flow characteristics in the off-body flow region. An overset mesh technique was adopted to transfer the flow variables between the two different mesh regions, and computations were carried out for three different blade configurations including swept-taper, rectangular, and swept-taper-anhedral tip shapes. The results of the simulation were compared against experimental data, and the computations were also made to investigate the effect of the blade tip Mach number. The detailed flow characteristics were also examined, including the tip-vortex trajectory, vortex core size, and first-passing tip vortex position that depended on the tip shape.

Turbulent jet in a crossflow, issuing from a row of holes on a convex surface of 90 .deg. bend duct, is predicted by a 3-dimensional numerical method. The Cartesian coordinate system in adopted in upstream and downstream tangents and the cylindrical polar coordinate system in curved region. The Reynolds stresses and heat fluxes are obtained from a standard k-e model in the core region and van Driest model in the vicinity of the wall. The governing equations are discretized by a finite volume method and solutions are obtained by a locally elliptic calculation procedure. Pressure and convective terms are treated by SIMPLE algorithm and hybrid scheme respectively. A vortex initially induced by the injected jet has been built up due to the interaction with the secondary flow caused by pressure gradient and centrifugal force. The vortex structure has a strong influence on the wall cooling effectiveness. Another vortex like horseshoe is formed in the vicinity of the injection hole and its strength is getting weak as it moves downward.

The flow-excited Helmholtz resonance phenomenon was investigated numerically using Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes approach. The fundamental cause of the Helmholtz resonance phenomenon is known as shedding of a single discrete vortex from orifice edge that travels during one period of the oscillation. In this study, serrated deflector, which is biomimetic design of the owl's feather, is used to split a single vortex into small vortices. Rectangular deflector and serrated deflector are compared with numerical results of pressure and streamline inside the cavity. Consequently, the serration breaks the shedding period of vortex core and eliminates the resonance. Also, it changes the flow pattern in according to the location of different serration height. By making inflows and outflows occur simultaneously in spanwise direction in the cavity, the period of Helmholtz resonance disappears. Comparing between rectangular deflector and serrated deflector, the serrated deflector can deal with the Helmholtz resonance more effectively.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of flow and wall shear stress under steady and pulsatile flow in the aneurysm. The numerical simulation using the software were carried out for the diameter ratios ranging from 1.5 to 3.0, Reynolds number ranging from 900 to 1800 and Womersley number, 15.47. For steady flow, it was shown that a recirculating vortex occupied the entire bulge with its core located closer to the distal end of the bulge and the strength of vortex increased with increase of the Reynolds number and diameter ratio. The position of a maximum wall shear stress was the distal end of the aneurysm regardless of the Reynolds number and diameter ratios. For the pulsatile flow, a recirculating flow at the bulge was developed and disappeared for one period and the strength of vortex increased with the diameter ratio. The maximum values of the wall shear stress increased in proportion to the diameter ratio. However, the position of a maximum wall shear stress was the distal end of the aneurysm regardless of the diameter ratios.
