볼텍스 튜브의 에너지 분리 특성에 대한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on Energy Separation Characteristics of Vortex Tube)

  • 볼텍스 튜브는 고압의 가스를 이용하여 고온 가스와 저온 가스를 분리하거나 입자상 물질의 분리에 사용 할 수 있는 장치이다. 본 연구에서는 직경 10mm의 볼텍스 튜브의 기본 설계 자료를 구축하기 위하여 에너지 분리 성능 실험을 수행하였다. 설계를 위한 기초 자료를 확보하기 위하여, 공급압력, 볼텍스 발생기의 오리피스 직경 및 튜브의 길이가 에너지 분리 특성에 미치는 영향력을 실험을 통하여 분석하였다. 결과적으로 오리피스 직경과 공급압력이 볼텍스 튜브의 성능의 지배적인 성능인자임을 확인하였다. 튜브길이가 성능에 미치는 영향은 미미하였다. Dc=0.7D, L=16D의 볼텍스 튜브에서 가장 우수한 에너지 분리효과를 얻을 수 있었다.

Dynamic Characteristics of an Unsteady Flow Through a Vortex Tube

  • Dynamic flow characteristics of a counter-flow vortex tube is investigated using hot-wire and piezoelectric transducer (PZT) measurements. The experimental study is conducted over a range of cold air outlet ratios (Y=0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0) and inlet pressure 0.15 MPa. Temperatures are measured at the cold air outlet and along the vortex tube wall. Hot-wire is located at cold outlet and PZT is installed at inner vortex tube by mounting at throttle valve. The cold outlet temperature results show that the swirl flow of vortex tube is not axisymmetric. The hot-wire and PZT results show that there exist two distinct kinds of frequency, low frequency periodic fluctuations and high frequency periodic fluctuations. It is found that the low frequency fluctuation is consistent with the Helmholtz frequency and the high frequency fluctuation is strongly related with precession oscillation.

  • The jet impingement cooling characteristics are investigated experimentally. The study is motivated by the potential application of local hot spot cooling by means of the vortex tube. The purposes of this research are to examine the effect of the nozzle-block spacing and flow rate. The results of jet through vortex tube is compared with ones of circular Jet. Flow visualization by the smoke-wire technique is also performed to investigate the flow structure. As the nozzle-block spacing is increased and flow rate decreased, the cooling effect of the Jet through the vortex tube decreases mere remarkably than that of the circular jet. So the cooling effect for the jet through the vortex tube is higher than that for the circular jet at $H/D{\leq}3$, $Q{\geq}10m^3/h$.

  • Fouling is very serious problem in heat exchanger because it rapidly deteriorates the performance of heat exchanger. Cross-flow heat exchanger with vortex generators is developed, which enhance heat transfer and reduce fouling. In the present heat exchanger, shell and baffle are removed from the conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger. The naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to measure the local heat transfer coefficients. The experiments are performed for single circular tube, staggered array tube bank and in-line array tube bank with and without vortex generators. Local and average Nusselt numbers of single tube and tube bank with vortex generator are investigated and compared to those of without vortex generator.

  • An object of this study is to confirm application characteristics of the vortex tube apparatus for substitution of the intercooler in a common-rail diesel engine. The turbo pressure, the intake air mass flow rate and the charging air cooling ratio of the intercooler were measured in an experimental engine. The vortex tube apparatus was made after confirmation of the geometric phenomena in fundamental experiments. The vortex tube designed with fundamental data was applied to a conventional common-rail diesel engine instead of the intercooler. Its application characteristics, engine performances and emissions were investigated. From this experimental results, we suggested the vortex tube can be applied to a conventional common-rail diesel engine throughout extra complement. We can also expect the higher cooling effect, if we consider the application of the vortex tube in supercharging diesel engine without the intercooler.

  • A vortex tube is a simple energy separating device that splits a compressed air stream into a cold and hot stream without any external energy supply or chemical reactions. The efforts of many researchers and designers have been focused on improvement of vortex tube efficiency by changing the parameters affecting vortex tube operation. The effective parameters are nozzle specifications and inflow pressure conditions. Effects of different nozzle cross-sectional area and number of nozzles are evaluated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. In this study, CFD analysis of 3-D steady state and turbulent flow through a vortex tube was performed. We investigated the cold air mass flow rate, the cold air temperature, and the cold air heat transfer rate behavior of a vortex tube by utilizing seven straight nozzles and four inflow pressure conditions.

The vortex tube apparatus was made after confirmation of the geometric phenomena in fundamental experiments. To investigate energy separation characteristics of the vortex tube, the measured turbo pressure was applied to the vortex tube inlet and the ${\Delta}T_c$ decrease ratio was compared with one of the intercooler in the cold air mass flow ratio similar to the intake air flow rate of the experimental engine. From the results, we found that the energy separation ratio is increased according to of the inlet pressure and the ${\Delta}T_c$ decrease ratio of the vortex tube apparatus is higher than one of the intercooler at low engine speed and engine load of medium and low.

  • vortex tube의 에너지 분리현상이 Ranque에 의해 처음으로 발견된 이래 vortex tube는 산업현장에서의 그 이용률이 점차 증대되고 있다. 특히, 최근에는 작업자의 쾌적한 작업환경을 조성하여 작업능률을 향상시킬 목적으로 제철소 등의 고온, 고습 작업장이나 분진, 석면, 유해먼지나 가스, 증기 등이 많이 발생하는 작업장에서 냉각복(air cool jacket) 또는 공기공급식 호흡보호구의 공기공급시스템에 많이 활용되고 있다. 이러한 vortex tube를 이용한 냉각복 및 호흡보호구는 작업자의 능률향상뿐만 아니라 직업병의 예방 및 안전측면에서 매우 효율성이 높아 그 적용범위가 점차 확대될 전망이다.   • In present study, the flow field near the fin surface of plate fin - oval tube heat exchanger with delta wing vortex generator was numerically analyzed. As results, the well developed vortex behind delta wing was observed. These vortex can improve heat transfer fin surface behind delta wing vortex generators.

  • The phenomena of energy separation in vortex tubes was investigated experimentally to see the effects of the conductivity of a tube and convective heat transfer on the outer surface of a tube. The experiment was carried out with different conductivity (pyrex, stainless steel and copper) of a tube and three kinds of convective heat transfer modes (adiabatic condition, natural convection (air) and forced convection (water) on the outer surface of a tube. the results were obtained that hot exit fluid temperature was highly affected by a change of conductivity of a tube when the outer surface was cooled by the forced convection of water. However, the cold exit temperature was little affected by heat transfer modes on the outer surface in vortex tubes.
