This paper is a study of the behavior characteristics that occur in the hydrogen storage vessel TYPE 1 according to pressure and temperature conditions by FEM(Finite element method). Von Mises stress (VMS) generated at the highest pressure was compared with Yield strength (YS) of the material for structural safety assessment of the container, and the results of plastic strain energy density (PSED) were analyzed as basic data for life expectancy. According to the analysis results, the safety of the hydrogen gas storage vessel is not ensured due to the occurrence of VMS higher than the yield strength on the bottom of the storage container at a gas pressure of 40 Mpa or higher. In addition, the results of VMS caused by temperature conditions are very low and the behavior by temperature can be ignored. The maximum pressure of VMS/YS below 1 is calculated to be about 30 Mpa, indicating that the hydrogen storage container subject to this paper should be managed with a gas charging pressure of less than 30 Mpa.
This study performed a precise dynamic finite element time history elastic-plastic seismic analysis considering the welds, which have been not considered in design stage, on the nuclear components subjected to severe seismic loadings such as beyond-design basis earthquakes for sustainable nuclear power plants. First, the dynamic finite element elastic-plastic seismic analysis was performed for a general design practice that does not take into account the welds of the pressurizer surge line system, one of safety class I components in nuclear power plants, and then the reference values for the accumulated equivalent plastic strain, equivalent plastic strain, and von Mises effective stress were set. Second, the dynamic finite element elastic-plastic seismic analyses were performed for the case of considering only the mechanical strength over-mismatch of the welds as well as for the case of considering both the strength over-mismatch and welding residual strain. Third, the effects of the strength over-mismatch and welding residual strain were analyzed by comparing the finite element analysis results with the reference values. As a result of the comparison, it was found that not considering the strength over-mismatch may lead to conservative assessment results, whereas not considering the welding residual strain may be non-conservative.
This paper is concerned with modeling of a ductile fracture criterion for sheet metal considering anisotropy to predict the sudden fracture of advanced high strength steel (AHSS) sheets during complicated forming processes. The Lou−Huh ductile fracture criterion is modified using the Hill’s 48 anisotropic plastic potential instead of the von Mises isotropic plastic potential to take account of the influence of anisotropy on the equivalent plastic strain at the onset of fracture. To determine the coefficients of the model proposed, a two dimensional digital image correlation (2D-DIC) method is utilized to measure the strain histories on the surface of three different types of specimens during deformation. For the derivation of an anisotropic ductile fracture model, principal stresses (𝜎1,𝜎2, 𝜎3) are expressed in terms of the stress triaxiality, the Lode parameter, and the equivalent stress (𝜂𝐻, 𝐿,) based on the Hill’s 48 anisotropic plastic potential. The proposed anisotropic ductile fracture criterion was quantitatively evaluated according to various directions of the maximum principal stress. Fracture forming limit diagrams were also constructed to evaluate the forming limit in sheet metal forming of AHSS sheets over a wide range of loading conditions.

Conventional bent plate used in mandibular reconstruction surgery needs safety verification since its mechanical properties are changed due to the plastic deformation during the bending process. In this study we investigate stability of the plastically deformed plate and the plate with the same shape without plastic deformation through the finite element analysis(FEA). First we simulate the process of plate bending to fit the defect in patient. Then, the other plate is modelled to represent a customized plate with the same shape of the plastically deformed one, but without any residual stresses from plastic deformation. After binding these plates to the mandible, we conduct the masticatory simulation. Finally, we compare the resulting Von Mises stress of the customized plate and of the bent plate. The bent plate shows much higher stress than the customized one due to the residual stresses form the bending process. The study shows that plastic deformation in the plate may decrease the safety of the reconstruction surgery.
A microstructure-based finite element simulation was conducted to predict the plastic strain ratio (R-value) of a dual-phase (DP) steel. The representative volume elements (RVEs) concept was adopted for the image-based FE modeling and a 3D model was constructed using sequential 2D images. Each phase was considered with the von-Mises yield criterion and the Swift model. The Swift parameters were defined by the empirical equations based on the chemical composition. The developed model was applied to analyze the effect of residual stress on the R-value and stress distribution. In order to consider the residual stress development after cold rolling, 10 % compression was applied in the thickness direction and unloaded before the tensile stress was applied in the rolling direction. The results showed a reasonable prediction for the R-value evolution: a sharp increase at small strains was well described and a transition followed in the downward direction. The R-value evolution was analyzed using the stress distribution change on the π-plane

To define ice as a solid material, mathematical and physical characteristics and their application examples are investigated for several materials' yield functions which include isotropic elastic, isotropic elastic-plastic, classical Drucker-Prager, Drucker-Prager Cap, Heinonen's elliptic, Derradji-Aouat's elliptic, and crushable foam models. Taking into account brittle failure mode of ice subject to high loading rate or extremely low temperature, isotropic elastic model can be better practicable than isotropic elastic-plastic model. If a failure criterion can be properly determined, the elastic model will provide relatively practicable impact force history from ice-hull interactions. On the other hand, it is thought that the soil models can better predict the ice spalling mechanism, since they contain both terms of shear stress-induced and hydrostatic stress-induced failures in the yield function.

Elastomeric seals are widely used in dynamic seal applications, and it is well known that the sealing surfaces can be gradually worn out. Abrasive wear is known to be the most dominant factor; however, little research has been carried out on this problem until now. In this study, a new contact problem related to elastomeric seals-a small spherical particle and steel surface-was modeled and analyzed using MARC. Variations of von-Mises and residual stress distributions as well as deformed seal and steel surface shapes with seal materials and interferences are presented. The stress distribution and surface deformation are highly affected by the elastic properties of seal. For PTFE, the maximum von-Mises stress exceeds the yield strength, and plastic deformation occurs on the steel surface. Therefore, the sealing surface can also be worn down by sub-surface fatigue due to intervening hard particles in the sealing surfaces together with the well-known abrasion.
A 3-node 3D co-rotational beam element using vectorial rotational variables is employed to consider the geometric nonlinearity in 3D space. To account for shape versatility and reinforced concrete cross-sections, fibre model has been derived and conducted. Numerical integration over the cross-section is performed, considering both normal and shear stresses. In addition, the derivations associated with material nonlinearity are given in terms of elasto-plastic incremental stress-strain relationship for both steel and concrete. Steel reinforcement is treated as elasto-plastic material with Von Mises yield criterion. Compressive concrete behaviour is described by Modified Kent and Park model, while tensile stiffening effect is taken into account as well. Through several numerical examples, it is shown that the proposed 3D co-rotational beam element with fibre model can be used to simulate steel and reinforced concrete framed structures with satisfactory accuracy and efficiency.

The behavior of the work materials in the chip-tool interface in extremely high strain rates and temperatures is more that of viscous liquids than that of normal solid metals. In these circumstances the principles of fluid mechanics can be invoked to describe the metal flow in the neighborhood of the cutting edge. In the present paper an Eulerian finite element model is presented that simulates metal flow in the vicinity of the cutting edge when machining a low carbon steel with carbide cutting tool. The work material is assumed to obey visco-plastic (Bingham solid) constitutive law and Von Mises criterion. Heat generation is included in the model, assuming adiabatic conditions within each element. the mechanical and thermal properties of the work material are accepted to vary with the temperature. The model is based on the virtual work-stream function formulation, emphasis is given on analyzing the formation of the stagnant metal zone ahead of the cutting edge. The model predicts flow field characteristics such as material velocity effective stress and strain-rate distributions as well as built-up layer configuration

The stress waves generated by the mechanical energies by impact or the chemical energies by the explosions are transmitted through medium. The wave propagation process through medium is a very complicated procedure due to the reflections and refractions of the waves at the free surfaces and interfaces. In this study the pressure independent Von-Mises model is employed for the wave propagation analysis in the layered systems. Governing equations of this study are conservation equations of momentum and mass in Lagrangian coordinate system which is fixed to the material. Due to the shock-front which violates the continuity assumptions inherent in the differential equations numerical artificial viscosity is used to spread the shock front over several computational zones. These equations are solved by Finite Difference Method with discretized time and space coordinates. The associate normality flow rule as a plastic theory is implemented to find the plastic strains.
