In this study, two types of central flow distributor designs are presented and compared to obtain the optimal compact design which has the least flow resistance and the uniform flow distribution in a vehicular fuel cell stack. For effective and reliable prediction on the thermo-flow characteristics of the reactants flow over the entire fuel cell stack domain, open channel flow in the bipolar plates of the power generating cells were simulated by applying a simplified flow resistance model with an empirical porous concept. A number of case studies were performed to figure out an optimal configuration of a central flow distributor device in terms of the time-dependent thermo-flow behavior and load-dependent flow distribution. The results showed that the stable and load-independent thermo-flow uniformity is very design specific, which is closely associated with the design of central manifolding devices in order to achieve the enhanced volumetric power density and the reliable long-lasting operating of fuel cells.

Nondestructive damage sensing and mechanical properties for thermal treated carbon nanotube(CNT) and nanofiber(CNF)/epoxy composites were investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Carbon black (CB) was used only for the comparison. Electro-micromechanical techniques were applied to obtain the fiber damage and stress transferring effect of carbon nanocomposites with their contents. Thermal treatment and temperature affected on apparent modulus and electrical properties on nanocomposites due to enhanced inherent properties of each CNMs. Coefficient of variation (COV) of volumetric electrical resistance can be used to obtain the dispersion degree indirectly for various CNMs. Dispersion and surface modification are very important parameters to obtain improved mechanical and electrical properties of CNMs for multifunctional applications. Further optimized functionalization and dispersion conditions will be investigated for the following work continuously.

In the absorption process of water vapor in a liquid film, the composition of the gas phase, in which a non-absorbable gas is combined with the absorbate influences the transport characteristics remarkably. In the present study, the absorption processes of water vapor into aqueous solution of lithium bromide in the presence of non-absorbable gases were investigated analytically. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and gas phase were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. It was found that the mass transfer resistance in gas phase increased with the concentration of non-absorbable gas. However the primary resistance to mass transfer was in the liquid phase. As the concentration of non-absorbable gas in the absorbate increased, the liquid-vapor interfacial temperature and concentration of absorbate in solution decreased, which resulted in the reduction of absorption rate. The reduction of mass transfer rate was found to be significant for the addition of a small amount of non-absorbable gas to the pure vapor, especially at the outlet of an absorber where non-absorbable gases accumulated. At higher non-absorbable gas concentration, the decrease of absorption flux was almost linear to the volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gas.

In this paper, a sliding mode controller of a fluid engine mount using MR (Magneto-Rheological) fluid was discussed When the MR fluid is applied to a fluid mount, resistance of MR fluid can be controlled by electro-magnetic valve installed in the inertia track. Since the rheological property of the MR fluid shows a function of shear rate, the damping characteristics of the mount will be change according to the frequency. Changing an applied magnetic field to the valve changes the property of the mount, such as the resistance of the MR fluid, the notch and the resonant frequencies due to the fluid passing, quantity of the fluid passing, the effective piston area of the volumetric damping and stiffness. Therefore, the fluid mount using MR fluid can be regarded as a variable structure system The sliding mode control known well as a particular type of variable structure control was introduced in this study. The sliding mode control, which has inherent robustness, is also expected to improve the control performance in the engine mount The sliding mode controller for the mount formatted by taking into account the response property with a time constant to MR fluid and the variable mount property. The motion equations of the fluid mount are derived from Newton's law of motion and used in numerical simulation. Numerical simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the sliding mode controller.
One of the most important factors that should be considered for using any ground improvement technique is the stability of stabilized soil and the durability of the provided solution for getting the required engineering properties. Generally, most of the earth structures that are constructed on clayey soils are exposing movements due to the long periods of drying or wetting cycles. Over time, environmental changes may result in swells or settlements for these structures. In order to mitigate this problem, this research has been performed on mixtures of high plasticity clay with traditional additives such as lime, cement and non-traditional additives such as polypropylene fiber. The purpose of the research is to assess the most appropriate ground improvement technique by using commercially available additives for resisting the developed desiccation cracks during the drying process and resisting the volume changes that may result during wet/dry cycles as an attempt to simulate the changes of environmental conditions. The results show that the fiber-reinforced samples have the lowest volumetric deformation in comparision with cement and lime stabilized samples, and the optimum fiber content is identified as 0.38%. In addition, the desiccation cracks were not visible on the samples' surface for both unreinforced and chemically stabilized samples. Regarding cracks resistance resulting from the desiccation process, it is observed, that the resistance is connected with the fiber content and increases with the increase of the fiber inclusion, and the optimum content is between 1% and 1.5%.

The ice resistance series charts for icebreaking ships were developed through a series of systematic model tests in the ice tank of the Korean Research Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering (KRISO). Spencer's (1992) component-based scaling system for ship-ice model tests was applied to extend the model ship correlations. Beam to draft ratio (B/T), length to beam ratio (L/B), block coefficient ($C_B$) and stem angle (${\alpha}$) were selected as geometric parameters for hull form development. The basic hull form (S1) of twin pod type with B/T of 3.0, L/B of 6.0, $C_B$ of 0.75 and stem angle of $25^{\circ}$ was generated with a modern hull design concept. A total of 13 hulls were designed varying the geometric parameters; B/T of 2.5 and 3.5, L/B of 5.0 and 7.0, $C_B$ from 0.65 to 0.85 in intervals of 0.05, and 5 stem angles from $15^{\circ}$ to $35^{\circ}$. Ice resistance tests were first carried out with the basic hull form in level ice with suitable speed. Four more tests for $C_B$ variations from 0.65 to 0.85 were conducted and two more for beam to draft and length to beam ratios were also performed to study the effect of the geometric parameters on ice resistance. Ice resistance tests were summarized using the volumetric coefficient, $C_V$ ($={\nabla}/L^3$), instead of L/B and $C_B$ variations. Additional model tests were also carried out to account for the effect of the stem angle, ice thickness and ice strength on ice resistance. In order to develop the ice resistance series charts with a minimum number of experiments, the trends of the ice resistance obtained from the experiments were assumed to be similar for other model ship with different geometric parameters. A total of 18 sheets composed of combinations of three different beam to draft ratios and six block coefficients were developed as a parameter of $C_V$ in the low speed regions. Three correction charts were also developed for stem angles, ice thickness and ice strength respectively. The charts were applied to estimate ice resistance for existing icebreaking ships including ARAON, and the results were satisfactory with reasonable accuracy.
As a rotating machine element, plastic gears are more and more widely used in such as industrial machine element, since plastic gear is lighter, higher wear-resistance, and higher vibration absorbing ability than metal gears. When operating plastic parts, tooth breakage and fatigue life shortened due to increasing number of applying load and tooth flank temperature rising, such that accuracy of plastic gears is divided from allowable range to cause vibration and noise. On this study, a internal plastic gears are developed which improved the filling balance molding process by a new injection mold structure. The new mold structure called HR3P(hot runner type 3plate mold). As the result from this studies, we obtained a very accurate roundness internal gears by using design of experiment.

$Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ is emerging as a promising material with its good structure stability and little volume change during the electrochemical reaction. However, its electrochemical performance is significantly limited by low electronic or ionic conductivity. In addition, high tap density is needed forim proving its volumetric energy density and commercialization. To enhance these properties, the spherical-like $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ particles were synthesized and carried out doping with yttrium. Prepared Y-doped $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ as a anode material showed great capacity retention rate of 92% (5C/0.2C), compared with no dope done. Consequently, it was found that Y doping into $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ matrix reduces the polarization and resistance on SEI layer during the electrochemical reaction.

The simple and precise model for the estimation of rain acidity from the ambient air quality was developed using the theory of wet scrubber and the chemical equilibria of $SO_2, CO_2, and H_2O$ system. From the measured mixing height, and from the developed relationship between NTU (=number of transfer units) and the concentration of $SO_2$(aq) in rain drops, the HTU (= height equivalent to one transfer unit, i.e. mass transfer resistance) was estimated, and validated with the field-measured data. In Seoul, Korea where the effect of $SO_2$ on rainfall acidity is as high as 84% and the average mixing height is 1 km, the average HTU of $SO_2$ system was found to be 191.5m. The important parameters affecting HTU were identified as rainfall intensity and initial ambient concentration of $SO_2$, and their effects on the value of overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient were quantified.

Concrete structures often present volumetrical changes particularly due to thermal and moisture related shrinkages. Volumetric instability is detrimental to the performance and durability of concrete structures because structural elements are usually restrained. These restrained shrinkages develope tensile stresses which often results in cracking in combination with the low fracture resistance of concrete. Early-age defects in high-performance concrete due to thermal and autogenous deformation shorten the life cycle of concrete structures. Thus, it is necessary to examine the behavior .of early-age concrete at the stages of design and construction. The purpose of this study was to propose a shrinkage models of VES-LMC (very-early strength latex-modified concrete) at early-age considering thermal deformation and autogenous shrinkage.
