  • Cranke-Nicolson scheme in native OpenFOAM source libraries was not able to provide 2nd order temporal accuracy of velocity and pressure since the volume flux of convective nonlinear terms was 1st accurate in time. In the present study the simplest way of getting the volume flux with 2nd order accuracy was proposed by using old fluxes. A possible numerical instability originated from an explicit estimation of volume fluxes could be handled by introducing a weighting factor which was determined by observing the ratio of the finally corrected volume flux to the intermediate volume flux at the previous step. The new calculation of volume fluxes was able to provide temporally accurate velocity and pressure with 2nd order. The improvement of temporal accuracy was validated by performing numerical simulations of 2D Taylor-Green vortex of which an exact solution was known and 2D vortex shedding from a circular cylinder.

  • In the production of internal combustion engines, there has been a move towards the development of high performance engines with improved fuel efficiency, lighter weight and smaller sizes. These trends help to answer problems in engines related to thermal load and abnormal combustion. In order to investigate these problems, a thin film-type probe for instantaneously measuring temperatures has been suggested. A method for manufacturing such a probe was established in this study. The instantaneous surface temperature of a constant volume combustion chamber was measured by this probe and the heat flux was obtained through Fourier analysis. In order to thoroughly understand the characteristics of combustion, the authors measured the wall temperature of the combustion chamber and computed heat flux through a cylinder wall while varying the protrusion height of the probe. For achieving the above goals, a instantaneous temperature probe was developed, thereby making possible the analysis of the instantaneous temperature of wall surface and the detection of unsteady heat flux in the constant volume combustion chamber.

  • In separating mycelia from antibiotic fermentation broths, high permeate flux was obtained by cross-flow filtration using modified regenerated cellulose membrane. The flux was increased most effectively by increasing the flow rate. There existed a critical mycelium density (about 20% PMV) at which the highest flux was observed. In a batchwise concentration of the fermentation broth, the system suffered from a severe fouling problem, which was relieved drastically by applying diafiltration technique, although it increased the permeate volume. A combined concentration/diafiltration process was ideal in keeping relatively high flux together with a high product recovery yield. The best result was obtained by starting diafiltration after concentrating the broth to 20% PMV. By doing so, a 98% product recovery yield was achieved in the shortest time while keeping the permeate volume at a minimum level.

  • The gasoline engine tends to high performance, fuel economy, small-sized. Therefore, it is necessary to solve the problems on thermal load, abnormal combustion, etc, in the engine, Thine film instantaneous temperature measurement probe was made. And the manufactural method of probe was established. The instantaneous surface temperatures in the constant volume combustion chamber were measured by this probe and the heat flux was obtained by Fourier analysis. The authors measured the wall temperature of combustion chamber and computed the heat flux through the cylinder wall in order to understand the combustion characteristics depending on height of probe. For achieving this goal, the thin film instantaneous temperature probe was developed for analyzing the instantaneous surface wall temperature and unsteady heat flux on the constant volume combustion chamber.

  • The existing approximations of diffusion flux in unstructured cell-centered finite volume methods are examined in detail with each other and clarified to have indefinite expressions in several respects. A new numerical approximation of diffusion flux at cell face center is then proposed, which is second-order accurate even on irregular grids and may be easily implemented in CFD code using cell-centered finite volume method with unstructured grids composed of arbitrary convex polyhedral shape.

  • An experimental study of heat transfer from hot flat surface to water sprays was conducted in high temperature region. Heat transfer measurements for hot flat surface were made by 4 sheathed C-A thermocouples. Droplets volume flux were also measured-independently at a position in spray field. The test conditions included variations in droplets volume flux, subcooling of cooling water of $1.565\times10^{-3} to 14.089\times10^{-3}m^3/m^2s and 80 to $20^{\circ}C$ respectively. The effects of inclination angle on heat transfer were investigated and changes in inclination angle of hot flat surface affected heat transfer coefficients of high temperature region.

  • In this paper, experiments investigating the high-temperature region heat transfer coefficients for the spray cooling of hot flat plates were performed by down spray water using flat spray nozzles. The heat transfer surface is made of copper and is 100mm in length and 40mm in width and 15mm in thickness. The experimental condition of spray are as follows: temperatures of the water droplets are T=20~$80^{\circ}C$ and droplets volume fluxes are D=0.001565~0.010438$m^3/m^2s$. Next, correlating equations for the heat transfer characteristics of spray cooling in the high temperature region are developed from the effects of droplets volume flux and the surface temperature of heat transfer plate.

  • The axial flux machine has higher power density than conventional radial flux machine, so it is widely applied to various industrial area, for instance, low speed wind power generator. For the conventional radial flux machine, 2D finite element method (FEM) is generally applied, but axial flux machine has to employ 3D FEM with long analysis time due to its own structural characteristic. This paper deals with the performance comparison of axial flux machine according to volume.

  • A study was performed to investigate the characteristics of two-phase jet injected into subsonic cross-flow using the external mixed gas blast two-phase nozzle. The shadowgraph method was adopted for the cross-flow jet visualization and PDPA system was used to measure droplet size, velocity, and volume flux. The atomization of two-phase jet is initially determined according to gas to liquid mass flow-rate ratio and the Reynolds number of cross-flows. The highest penetration trajectories of two-phase jet injected into cross-flow are governed by the momentum ratio at subsonic cross-flow. As GLR of two-phase jet injected into cross-flow increases, the droplet size decreases and the distribution area of volume flux increases. The distribution of volume flux that influenced by the counter vortex pair at the downstream of cross-flow is symmetric in shape of horseshoe.
