This study aims at the optimal design of the screw rotor and its performance analysis. The optimal design of the screw rotor's shape has been performed theoretically. Also, the performance analysis technique of an oil-injected screw air compressor is developed. The effect of internal leakage, heat exchange between air and oil, and flow resistance at suction and discharge ports are included in the performance analysis. Some numerical examples of the volumetric efficiency and adiabatic efficiency for sample rotors are demonstrated for various lobe combination, rotor wrap angles and L/D ratios.
Catalytic removal of sulfur compounds from heavy naphtha (HN) was investigated using a combination of an oxidation process using hydrogen peroxide and an adsorption process using granulated activated carbon (GAC) and white eggshell (WES). This study investigated the impact of changing several operating parameters on the desulfurization efficiency. Specifically, the volume ratio of $H_2O_2$ to HN (0.01~0.05), agitation speed ($U_{speed}$) of the water bath shaker ($100-500{\pm}1rpm$), pH of sulfur solution (1~5), amount of adsorbent (0.1~2.5 g), desulfurization temperature ($25{\sim}85{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) and contact time (10~180 minutes) were examined. The results indicate that the desulfurization efficiency resulting from catalytic and adsorption processes of GAC is better than that of WES for oxidation and removing sulfur compounds from HN due to its high surface area. The desulfurization efficiency depends strongly on all investigated operating parameters. The maximum removal efficiency of GAC and WES achieved by this study was 86 and 65, respectively.

There was no significant difference in the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) between physical aerosols, NaCl and smoke, and biological aerosols, airborne MS2 virus and P. fluorescens, which implicate that the hybrid-type of air purifier, applying the unipolar ion emission and the radiant catalytic ionization, imposed identical reduction effect on both physical aerosol and bioaerosol. Ventilation decreases the efficiency of air cleaning by unipolar ionization because high ventilation diminishes the particle concentration reduction effect. The particle removal efficiency decreases with increase in the chamber volume because of the augmented ion diffusion and higher ion wall loss rate. Particle size affects the efficiency of air ionization. The efficiency is high for particles with very small diameter because reduction of charge increases with particle size. If there is no increasing supply of ions, the efficiency of air cleaning by unipolar ionization increases with respect to initial concentration of particles because of the large space charge effect at high particle concentration and amplified electric field.
Recently, artificial reefs (ARs) have been frequently used primarily owing to the development in AR materials and projects for relatively complicated, large ARs. Among several engineering issues of ARs, wake region of an AR has been characterized because these regions have a high probability of recruiting seaweed spores, providing an energy saving zone, and facilitating deposition of sediments, nutrients, and bio-deposits. To characterize an efficiency index of an AR wake region and its dependency on the prevailing water flow directions, this study proposes a so-called efficiency index diagram. This characterization is done by normalizing the wake volumes with respect to the real AR volume and illustrating how efficiency indices vary with respect to the inlet flow directions. As a result, according to the diagram characteristics such as an averaged efficiency index, fundamental symmetric angle, secure angles, and principal directions, we can easily figure out how a target AR should be aligned along the main water flows to maximize the wake region around the AR. In addition, six ARs are considered and their efficiency index diagrams are illustrated to pinpoint the physical characteristics.

In this study, the extraction efficiency and reflection coefficient by a two-dimensional OWC (Oscillating Water Column) WEC (wave energy converter) installed in front of a seawall was investigated for regular/irregular waves. The matched eigenfunction expansion method (MEEM) based on the linear potential theory was applied as an analytical tool. The diffraction problem by the incident wave in the open-chamber and the radiation problem by the oscillating pressure in the closed-chamber were solved to obtain the volume fluxes at the internal free-surface. Applying the volume fluxes into the continuity equation for the airflow in a chamber, we got the oscillating air pressure. The maximum extracted power and corresponding reflection coefficient were determined at the optimal turbine coefficient that maximizes the extracted power. OWC device designed for a high extracted efficiency simultaneously contributes to reduce reflected waves.

This paper deals with the preliminary design conditions of Stirling Engines based on an adiabatic analysis with regenerator effectiveness. The investigation of thermal regeneration process results that the definition of effectiveness proposed by Urieli et al. is appropriate for the present model. Then, it is applied to the already existing approximate analytic solution for the adiabatic model in order to optimize thermal efficiency as well as work parameter. Results show that thermal efficiency is less sensitive to the variation in design parameters than work. Phase angle for the maximum work is also the most efficient at high values of the effectiveness. Swept volume ratio should be chosen with care. The optimum value of dead volume ratio is at least less than the maximum efficiency condition. The feasible design range in compression ratio lies between the maximum efficiency condition and the structural limit of Stilring Engines, where the higher its value, the better. Changes in the temperature ratio do not alter the design conditions. Working fluids with the specific heat ratio 1.67 are more efficient that those with 1.4.
In this study, a series of experiments were carried out to remove total petroleum hydrocarbon(TPH) and toluene by soil flushing. In batch experiments, Triton X-100 and SWA 1503 showed TPH removal efficiency of 79.0% and 69.0%, respectively. Although the TPH removal efficiency increased as the surfactant was increased in the concentration range 1-11mmol/L, the optimum concentration was 1mmol/L, considering the ratio of the removal efficiency to the amount of surfactant injected. In column experiment, the optimal velocity was 0.3mL/min. The physical aquifer model(PAM) result revealed that the soil flushing removed as much as 5.5% of the toluene under 3 pore volume(PV) conditions. To improve the soil flushing efficiency, it is necessary to find optimal condition through recirculation or reuse of surfactant.
Coincidence summing correction effects are known to be greater as the efficiency of the detector increases and as the distance between the source and the detector increases. A point source($^{60}Co$) was used to vary the distance in the direction of the detector's center axis and in the radial direction to obtain the P/T ratio for Coincidence summing correction calibration. In this study, values for coincidence summing corrected calibration of the values in the central and radial directions were applied to the mixed volume source(450 ml CRM source) to compare the overall peak efficiency change according to P/T with Geant4. In addition, the efficiency obtained from the mapping method is applied to the seaweed, a marine sample, and the compatibility of the P/T ratio with the detector and sample very dose together. The efficiency corrected to 1,836 keV was applied to the energy zone affected by the efficiency of 500 keV and the relative error of the measured and corrected values was well matcched by the 3.2 % peak efficiency correction. As with 450 mL CRM source, the larger the volume, the lower the P/T ratio was by ${\pm}5%$. This is due to the increased scattering of gamma-rays emitted as the source becomes farther away from the detector, and this change in P/T has been confirmed to affect the Coincidence summing corrected peak efficiency.

Binary volume data has its widespread use in the application of color volume rendering and surgical simulation system where gray-scale volume is inappropriate. For the efficient representation of binary volume, this paper proposes a new data structure - the Slice-based Binary Shell (SBS) - along with its rendering algorithm. Since SBS stores the minimal set of surface voxels in slice order and supports the direct computation of voxel coordinates, it shows high efficiency for rendering multiple objects. The rendering algorithm of SBS running on a PC with no specialized hardware renders more than one hundred binary objects in a second.
In this paper, the diffraction problems for fixed offshore structures are solved using a hybrid scheme. In this hybrid scheme, potential-based solutions and the Navier-Stokes-based finite volume method (FVM) with a volume-of-fluid (VOF) method are combined. We introduce a buffer zone for efficient wave-making and damping. In this buffer zone, the near field solution from FVM-VOF is gradually changed to Stokes' 2nd order wave solutions. Three different models, including the truncated cylinder, sphere, and wigleyIII model, are numerically investigated in regular waves with a wave steepness of 1/30. The efficiency and accuracy of the hybrid scheme are numerically validated from results using different domain sizes and buffer zones. The wave exciting forces from the FVM-VOF simulations are compared with experiments and potential-based solutions from the higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM). This comparison shows good agreement between the hybrid scheme and potential-based solutions.
