  • In order to clarify an effect of the cutoff grouting, a series of field experiments were performed during construction of the waterway tunnel from the River Gilancheon(Andong) to the Youngcheon dam. The experiments were conducted in three different ways based on the grouting time in the construction sequence, i.e., the pre-grouting, after-grouting and consolidation grouting tests. And those were also planned to compare the efficiency of grouting in relation to the material types of grout, base rock types and other geologic factors such as discontinuities, depth and direction of grouting holes, and number of grouting stages. Among the materials of grout employed in the experiments, such as a common Portland cement, a micro-cement, a micro-cement with sodium silicate, and a urethane, the urethane was the most effective as the cutoff grouting. And for the same grout material, the pre-grouting was more effective to cutoff the water inflow comparing to the after-grouting and the consolidation grouting. For the rock types, the grouting efficiency in the sedimentary rocks as a base rock was less than the other rocks such as granite and volcanic rocks, which is believed due to the smaller separation of joints and the abundance of infilling materials in the joints developed in the sedimentary rocks. There was no direct relationship between the total RMR value of the rock mass and the grouting efficiency, however, the joint separation which is one of the RMR criteria is believed to have positive relation to the grouting efficiency. And the direction of the grouting holes might not so much affect on the grouting efficiency while increasing the number of grouting stage showed the better results.

  • It is believed that geological survey, drilling and geophysical survey which was carried out on Tertiary deposits in Pohang is a valuable but through the studying of many Tertiary sediments in Japan discovered many questions on analysis of final report prepared by National geological survey. The main reason is: 1. The seismic sound velocity which have regulated in the final report prepared by geological survey for Tertiary deposits in Pohang was 1,500-2,000m/sec in spite of oil bearing sediments of same age in Japan are 2,000-3,800m/sec. These may means the requirement of reconsideration of seismic velocity for Tertiary deposits in Pohang and required to have a dipper drilling. 2. Stratigraphically, geophysically, and paleontologically, the Tertiary deposits in Pahang land area is similar with that of Nishiyama-Hunakawa formations of Akita oil field in Japan. Nishiyama-Hunakawa formation is the main oil bearing formation in Japan. 3. Those valcanic rock including andestitic rock and liparitic rock which have extensively distributed over either at land area or at sea bottom, assumed by geological survey as the base of Tertiary sediments. But in case of Japan many oil bearing deposits are in over laid by these kind of volcanic rock. Therefore a possible of same condition with Japan is presumable on Tertiary sediments in Pohang. 4. It is believed that the Tertiary sediments of land area in Pohang is the extension of offshore basin but is wandering that the final report submitted by geologic survey have not remain any word on report of ECAFE discribed so much problematics as followed: A. Although it was assumed that no great thickness exceeding 1,000 meters, or major structures would be encountered in the Tertiary offshore sequence, it was hoped that shallow hydrocarbon deposits might be found, because these sediment are lithologically similar to those of the same age in the producing area of the northwest Honshu region of Japan where hydrocarbon are extracted from depths of only 500 to 600 meters. B. Four possible hydrocarbon trap conditions are represented in the survey area: anticlinal folds, faults, pinch outs, along the igneous basement and lateral facies changes. C. Most of the prime possible reservoir area are beyond the 50 meter water depth mark, except for the structures in Yonil Bay. D. Despite the shallowness of the offshore basin, sufficient trap condition exist in the area to warrant further exploration for hydrocarbon. 5. All of the problems mentioned above have gave us a strong reasons to have us hesitating to make a final conclusion on Tertiary problems in Pohang, before to have a drill to a depth to 3,000 meters or more whatever it is the Tertiary or a Mesozoics below 1,000 meters.

  • In order to protect the environment from waste disposal activities, the prediction of the flux and flow paths of the contaminants from underground facilities should be assessed as accurately as possible. Especially, the prediction of the pathways and travel times of the nuclides from high level radioactive wastes in a deep repository to biosphere is one of the primary tasks for assessing the ultimate safety and performance of the repository. Since the contaminants are mainly transported with groundwater along the discontinuities developed within rock mass, the characteristics of groundwater flow through discontinuities is important for the prediction of contaminant fates as well as safety assessment of a repository. In this study, the actual fracture network could be effectively generated based on in situ data by separating geometric parameter and hydraulic parameter. The calculated anisotropic hydraulic conductivity was applied to a 3D porous medium model to calculate the path flow and travel time of the large studied area with the consideration of the complex topology in the area. Using the model, the pathways and travel times for groundwater were analyzed. From this study, it was concluded that the suggested techniques and procedures for predicting the pathways and travel times of groundwater from underground facilities to biosphere is acceptable and those can be applied to the safety assessment of a repository for radioactive wastes.

  • Recently on Jeju island there has been a lot of development and construction. However random distribution of porous basalt and clinker seam generated from volcanic activities often interrupt and greatly reduce efficiency of blasting necessary for construction. Three test blasts were operated to solve the inefficiency problem and results indicated that a powder factor of 0.40~0.45 $kg/cm^3$ is necessary to increase the efficiency of blasting. Also the blasting scheme should be concerned whether clinker seams exists in excavation levels or not.

  • Volcanic rocks including rhyolitic tuff, rhyolite and welded tuff in the Bupyeong silver mine area form a topographic circular structure which is interpreted as a resurgent caldera. Granitic rocks are emplaced inside and outside area of the circular structure. Pervasive silver mineralization took place in the rhyolitic rock of the southwestern margin of the caldera. Gas and fluid incluson studies were carried out to investigate the petrogenetic evolution and post-magmatic alteration for the rhyolitic and granitic rocks. Gas compositions are characterized by a low $CH_4/CO_2$ ratio (0.004-0.005) for rhyolitic and inside granitic rocks and a high $CH_4/CO_2$ ratio (0.01~0.29) for outside granitic rocks such as the Kimpo and Incheon granites. Homogenization temperature of solid daughter mineral bearing fluid inclusion (III and IV types) and two phase fluid inclusion (I and II types) for quartz in the Bupyeong granites range from 400 to $500^{\circ}C$ and 121 to $514^{\circ}C$, respectively. Salinties vary from 20 to 30 wt% NaCl for type III and IV inclusions and less than 20 wt % NaCl for type I and II inclusions. The fluid inclusion data shows a considerable influx of the meteoric water toward post magmatic alteration stage.

  • A total of 23 springs distributed in the southern and northern sides of Mt. Hala in Jeju Island were seasonally sampled and analyzed for their major ion chemistry and oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions to investigate their hydrogeochemical and isotopic characteristics. Dissolved ion concentrations of the south-side springs slightly increase with decreasing altitude. This indicates that dissolved ion concentrations of groundwater recharged at higher altitudes increase by water-rock interaction during the downgradient migration of groundwater through highly permeable volcanic aquifer. Dissolved ion concentrations of the north-side springs also slightly increase with decreasing altitude, but dramatically increase at ~300 m.a.s.l. This may indicate a sudden input of contaminants to the north-side groundwater system around ~300 m.a.s.l. Springs located in areas above ~300 m.a.s.l. have very low concentrations of dissolved ions, showing little seasonal variations. Whereas springs located in areas below ~300 m.a.s.l. show a big seasonal variation in the concentration of dissolved ions. Seasonal variation of oxygen isotope compositions of springs is ~3$\textperthousand$ for high-altitude springs (~1700 m.a.s.l.) and is ~2$\textperthousand$ near shore, indicating an attenuation of the variation through mixing with other groundwater bodies during migration.

  • Epithermal Mn-Au-Ag deposits of subvolcanic type in the Yeongil area discovered by one (Soo Jin Kim) of the present authors was studied with emphasis on their mineralogy, genesis and future potential. Mineralization is genetically related to volcanic activities of the Tertiary Period, which have produced porphyritic rhyolite, granite porphyry, felsitic rhyolite and agglomerate. Ore deposits are closely associated with felsitic rhyolite. They occur as breccia-filling, veins, or networks. Mineralization is characterized by rhodochrosite-sulfide ores of breccia-type in the central zone, and sulfide ores of disseminated type in the outer zone. Sulfides consist mainly of pyrite and marcasite, with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, argentian tetrahedrite, galena and gold in the central zone, and of pyrite, marcasite and argentian tetrahedrite in the outer zone. Sulfides are generally not easily identified with naked eye because of their very fine-grained nature. Wall rock alteration zones are also developed around ore deposits over the large area. Occurrence of ore deposits and the nature of mineralization indicate that the uppermost portion of ore deposits are now exposed on the surface, and therefore, the main mineralized zones are expected in depth.

  • This study presents a survey of the bryophytes of evergreen broad-leaved forest near Baekyaki Oreum in Gujwa-Seongsan Gotjawal in the eastern part of Jejudo Island, Korea. A total of 53 taxa belonging to Bryophyta (11 families 26 genera 39 species) and Marchantiophyta (9 families, 9 genera 14 species) were determined, and the liverwort index was found to be 26.4%. The predominant life-form was the mat type. The rates of bryophytes dominating at mesic to hygric sites were higher than those of bryophytes, which were mainly observed in xeric habitats. These values indicate that the forest areas in this study area have a high density level. Upon an investigation of the substrates, bryophytes on rocks were most diverse. It was also found that volcanic rock masses of various sizes lay scattered over the study area and offer numerous micro-habitats for bryophytes. This is related to the characteristics of Gotjawal. We consider that more detailed studies should be conducted on regional scales to establish the bryophyte flora of Gotjawal and the evergreen broad-leaved forests of Jejudo Island.

  • The Sangeun ore deposit is located in a volcanic belt within the Gyeongsang Basin in south western Korea. The ore deposit is of representative epithermal Au-Ag quartz vein type developed in lapilli tuff. This paper presents the mineralization with special emphasis on mineral zoning of the deposits. Principal points are summarized as follows: (1) Four stages of mineralization are recognized based on macrostructures. From ealier to later they are stage I(arsenopyrite-pyrite-quartz), stage II(Au-Ag bearing Pb-Zn-quartz), stage III(barren quartz), and stage IV(dickite-quartz). (2) Electrum principally occurs with arsenopyrite and galena in stage II, and has chemical compositions of 72.9-67.1 Ag atom %, and has Ag/Au ratio of 2.69-2.04. (3) Sphalerite varies in its FeS content according to the mineralization stages; 22.03-18.60 mole % FeS and 1.33-0.23 mole % MnS in stage IB, 16.11-8.64 mole % FeS and 1.33-0.23 mole % MnS in stage II. (4) Alteration zones of mineral assemblage, from the vein to the wall-rock, consist of sericite - quartz - pyrite, sericite - quartz - dickite, sericite - chlorite plagioclase respectively.

  • Using factor analysis and bivariate comparisons of major components in ground water, three geochemical processes were identified as controlling factors of ground water chemistry; 1) natural mineralization by water rock interactions, 2) effect of seawater which includes salinization by seawater near seashores and deposition of sea salt, and 3) nitrate contamination by N fertilization. Contribution of rainfall was also estimated from the measured composition of wet deposition. The geochemical processes were separated using total alkalinity as an indicator for natural mineralization, Cl for effect of seawater, and nitrate for N fertilization. Relatively high correlation of major components with nitrate suggests that nitrification of nitrogenous fertilizers significantly affects ground water chemistry. Total cations derived from nitrate sources have good linearity for nitrate in equivalent basis with a slope of 1.8, which is a mean of proton production coefficients in nitrification of two major compounds in nitrogenous fertilizers, ammonium and urea. Contribution of nitrate sources to base cations, Cl, and SO$_4$ in ground water was determined considering maximum contribution of natural mineralization to estimate a threshold of the effect of N fertilization for ground water chemistry, which shows W fertilization has a greatest effect than any other processes in ground water with nitrate concentration greater than 50 mg/L for Ca, Mg, Na and with concentration greater than 30 mg/L for Cl and SO$_4$.
