  • In this paper, the p-channel poly Si thin-film transistors (Poly-Si TFT's) using formed by solid phase crystallization (SPC) on glass substrate were fabricated. And we propose an ONO(Oxide-Nitride-Oxide) multilayer as the gate insulator for poly-Si TFT's to indicate non-volatile memory (NVM) effect. Poly-Si TFT is investigated by measuring the electrical properties of poly-Si films, such as I-V characteristics, on/off current ratio. NVM characteristics is showed by measuring the threshold voltage change of TFT through I-V characteristics.

Volatile Fatty Acids Production During Anaerobic and Aerobic Animal Manure Bio-treatment

  • Odors from manures are a major problem for livestock production. The most significant odorous compounds in animal manure a.e volatile fatty acids(VFAs). This work reviews the VFAs from the anaerobic sequencing biofilm batch reactor(ASBBR), anaerobic sequencing batch reactor(ASBR), solid compost batch reactor(SCBR), and aerobic sequencing batch reactor(SBR) associated with the animal manure biological treatment. First, we describe and quantify VFAs from animal manure biological treatment and discuss biofiltration for odor control. Then we review certain fundamentals aspects about Anaerobic and aerobic SBR, composting of animal manure, manure compost biofilter for odorous VFAs control, SBR for nitrogen removal, and ASBR for animal wastewater treatment systems considered important for the resource recovery and air quality. Finally, we present an overview for the future needs and current experience of the biological systems engineering for animal manure management and odor control.

Extraction Methods of Organic Components from Rubber Composites and Analysis of the Extract Using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

  • Rubber articles contain various organic additives such as antidegradants, curing agents, and processing aids. It is important to extract and analyze these organic additives. In this paper, various extraction methods of organic additives present in rubber composites were introduced (solvent extraction, Soxhlet extraction, headspace extraction, and solid-phase microextraction), and the extracts were characterized using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Solvent and Soxhlet extractions are easy-to-perform and commonly used methods. Efficiency of solvent extraction varies according to the type of solvent used and the extraction conditions. Soxhlet extraction requires a large volume of solvent. Headspace sampling is suitable for extracting volatile organic compounds, while solid-phase extraction is suitable for extracting specific chemicals. GC/MS is generally used for characterizing the extract of a rubber composite because most components of the extract are volatile and have low molecular weights. Identification methods of chemical structures of the components separated by GC column were also introduced.

Comparative Study on Volatile Flavor Compounds of Traditional Chinese-type Soy Sauces Prepared with Soybean and Defatted Soy Meal

  • Volatile extracts obtained from traditional Chinese-type soy sauces prepared with soybean (SSSB) and defatted soy meal (SSDSM) by solid phase microextraction (SPME) and direct solvent extraction (DSE) were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The volatile flavor compounds and relative contents of different chemical classes detected in SSSB and SSDSM were compared for their differences. Results showed that significant differences in both constituents of volatile flavor compounds and relative contents of different chemical classes were observed for both kinds of soy sauces. A total of 152 and 131 compounds were identified in SSSB and SSDSM, respectively, and 102 volatile flavor compounds were common in both kinds of soy sauces. Moreover, relative contents of acids, aldehydes, esters, furan(one)s, miscellaneous compounds, phenols, pyrazines, pyrrol(idinon)es, and sulfur-containing compounds in both kinds of soy sauces were all significantly different.

Differential Modulation of Volatile Constituents in Artemisia princeps and Artemisia argyi Plants after Gamma Ray or Electron Beam Irradiation

  • The effects of gamma ray or electron beam irradiation on herbaceous medicinal plants were investigated in terms of the composition of volatile constituents using the aerial parts or leaves of Artemisia princeps Pamp. cv. Ganghwayakssuk and Artemisia argyi cvs. Namhaeyakssuk and Hwanghaessuk. The composition of volatile constituents in leaves was clearly distinguishable among the three Artemisia cultivars. However, the relative proportions of the major volatile constituents such as 1,8-cineole, ${\alpha}$-pinene, camphene, santolina triene, and artemesia triene, were similarly changed in two or three cultivars by gamma ray or electron beam irradiation. In particular, the proportion of 1,8-cineole was increased up to 1.29- to 1.71-fold in the three cultivars after irradiation with gamma ray. These results suggest that gamma ray or electron beam irradiation can be applied to modulate the composition of volatile constituents in the leaves of Artemisia plants.

A Study on Physico-chemical Properties of Dust-fall in Inchon (대기중 강하먼지의 물리화학적 특성분석 -인천지역을 중심으로-)

  • In order to evaluate the air quality, dry and wet deposition samples were collected by deposit containers during four months in Inchon area. The samples were analyzed for its solid composition and trace elements(Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn). The main results are summarized below 1. The amounts of dry and wet deposition in Inchon area were 1.06~3.14 ton/$km^2$/month, and affected by the rainfall and suspended yellow sand. 2. Through the analysis of solid balance, we found that 50% of total solids(TS) was fixed suspend ed solids(FSS), 25% was fixed dissolved solids(FDS), and each of volatile suspended solids(VSS) and volatile dissolved solids(VDS) accounted for 12.5%. 3. The amounts collected by sampler for trace elements were 938 ~ 2,765 $\mu g$ calcium/10days sampler, 0.2 ~ 90.4 $\mu g$ cadmium/10days/sampler, 26 ~ 298 $\mu g$ copper/10days/sampler, 928 ~ 3,939 $\mu g$ iron/10days/sampler, 50 ~ 202 $\mu g$ manganese/10days/sampler, 4 ~ 37 $\mu g$ nickel/10days/sampler, 52 ~ 406 $\mu g$ lead/10days/sampler, and 97 ~ 1,317 $\mu g$ zinc/10days/sampler, respectively. 4. Using the manganese analysis, it was found that 76.1% of TS was from soil.

Trace Enrichment of Volatile Free Acids from Aqueous Samples (수용성 매체로부터 휘발성 유리 지방산의 미량 농축에 관한 연구)

  • Liquid-solid extraction technique was applied to enrich volatile free acids (VFAs) from aqueous matrices. Chromosorb P was found to be an efficient solid sorbent. The unionized VFAs could be quantitatively recovered from the Chromosorb P column with ether while interfering watermiscible components were retained in the adsorbed water on the surface of Chromosorb P. The method of simple and efficient isolation-enrichment of VFAs, followed by the quantitative analysis employing stainless steel capillary column coated with Carbowax 20M containing phosphoric acid has been applied to the determination of VFAs in several aqueous samples.

Characterization of Fennel Flavors by Solid Phase Trapping-Solvent Extraction and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

  • Headspace solid phase trapping solvent extraction (HS-SPTE) and GC-MS was applied for the characterization of volatile flavors from fennel, anise seed, star-anise, dill seed, fennel bean, and Ricard aperitif liquor. Tenax was used for HS-SPTE adsorption material. Recoveries, precision, linear dynamic ranges, and the limit of detection in the analytical method were validated. There were some similarities and distinct differences between fennel-like samples. The Korean and the Chinese fennels contained trans-anethole, (+)-limonene, anisealdehyde, methyl chavicol as major components. The volatile aroma components from star anise were characterised by rich trans-anethole, (+)-limonene, methyl chavicol, and anisaldehyde. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) has been used for characterizing or classifying eight different fennel-like samples according to origin or other features. A quite different pattern of dill seed was found due to the presence of apiol (dill).

Development of Eco-Friendly High-Solids Paints for Automotive Coatings (환경친화형 고고형분 자동차용 도료의 개발)

  • Manufactures of automotive repair finishes are tending to reduce more and more the level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in their paint processes in order to comply with increasingly strict environmental legislation. The production of high solids paints is a way to solve this problem. However, the application of high-solids paints is limited primarily by the viscosity of resin which is strongly related to painting ability: the higher solid content, the lower desired property. In this study, alkyl copolymer with low viscosity was synthesized by the introduction of the monomers with long-side chains and functional groups which improve flexibility and cross-linking density, respectively. The solid content of the paint prepared with the synthesized resin was 80wt% and its VOCs was reduced by 20%, compared to the commercialized paint. Also, the physical and mechanical properties of coatings on steel sheets were similar to commercialized one.

Low Temperature Effects on the Nitrification in a Nitrogen Removal Fixed Biofilm Process Packed with SAC Media

  • A fixed biofilm reactor system composed of anaerobic, anoxic(1), anoxic(2), aerobic(1) and aerobic(2) reactor was packed with synthetic activated ceramic (SAC) media and adopted to reduce the inhibition effect of low temperature on nitrification activities. The changes of nitrification activity at different wastewater temperature were investigated through the evaluation of temperature coefficient, volatile attached solid (VAS), specific nitrification rate and alkalinity consumption. Operating temperature was varied from 20 to $5^{\circ}C$. In this biofilm system, the specific nitrification rates of $15^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$ and $5^{\circ}C$ were 0.972, 0.859 and 0.613 when the specific nitrification rate of $20^{\circ}C$ was assumed to 1.00. Moreover the nitrification activity was also observed at $5^{\circ}C$ which is lower temperature than the critical temperature condition for the microorganism of activated sludge system. The specific amount of volatile attached solid (VAS) on media was maintained the range of 13.6-12.5 mg VAS/g media at $20{\sim}10^{\circ}C$. As the temperature was downed to $5^{\circ}C$, VAS was rapidly decreased to 10.9 mg VAS/g media and effluent suspended solids was increased from 3.2 mg/L to 12.0 mg/L due to the detachment of microorganism from SAC media. And alkalinity consumption was lower than theoretical value with 5.23 mg as $CaCO_3$/mg ${NH_4}^+$-N removal at $20^{\circ}C$. Temperature coefficient (${\Theta}$) of nitrification rate ($20^{\circ}C{\sim}5^{\circ}C$) was 1.033. Therefore, this fixed film nitrogen removal process showed superior stability for low temperature condition than conventional suspended growth process.
