  • This paper deals with the underwater image transmission system which includes in AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) Project(that is VORAM(Vehicle for Ocean Research And Monitoring)), developed by KIMM for survey and investigation of a sea-bed through transmitting the underwater image to the mother ship. The system presented in this paper consists of a transducer which has a 136KHz center frequency and it's 10KHz bandwidth, pre-amplifier, $\pi$/4 QPSK(Quadreature Phase Shift Keying) modulation/demodulation method, image compressing method using JPEG technique and modified Stop & protocol. The experimental results of the system is verified to a high performance with 9600 bps for transmitting the underwater image through the basin test. The results of test are also verified which allows to desirable transmission performance compared with the existing developed system and the possibility to put the practical use of survey and investigation. And, the viterbi coding and adaptive equalizer for cancelling the multipath effect are developing for more effective image transmission system. Also, these technique will very effectively adapt to realtime image transmission system.

  • Underwater acoustic communications has been limited use for military purposes in the past. However, the fields of underwater applications expend to detection, submarine and communication in recent. The excessive multipath encountered in underwater acoustic communication channel is creating inter symbol interference, which is limiting factor to achieve a high data rate and bit error rate performance. To improve the performance of a received signal in underwater communication, many researchers have been studied for channel coding scheme with excellent performance at low SNR. In this paper, we applied BCJR decoder based ( 2,1,7 ) convolution codes and to compensate for the distorted data induced by the multipath, we applying the turbo equalization method. Through the underwater experiment on the Gyeungcheun lake located in Mungyeng city, we confirmed that turbo equalization structure of BCJR has better performance than hard decision and soft decision of Viterbi decoding. We also confirmed that the error rate of decoder input is less than error rate of $10^{-1}$, all the data is decoded. We achieved sucess rate of 83% through the experiment.

  • In this paper, we present an implementation and it's real-sea test of an underwater acoustic data communication system, which allows the system to reduce complexity and increase robustness in time variant underwater environments. For easy adaptation to complicated and time-varying environments of the ocean, all-digital transmitter and receiver systems were implemented. For frame synchronization the CAZAC sequence was used, and QPSK modulation/ demodulation method with carrier frequency of 25kHz and a bandwidth of 5kHz were applied to generate 10kbps transmission rate including overhead. To improve transmission quality, we used several techniques and algorithms such as adaptive beamforming, adaptive equalizer, and convolution coding/Viterbi decoding. for the verification of the system performance, measurement of BER has been done in a very shallow water with depth of 8m at JangMok, Geoje. During the experiment, image data were successfully transmitted up to about 7.4km.

  • The front-end system having a capable of 2x reading and writing of BD-R/Ra/ROM is developed. Its readability is improved by adopting 5-tap adaptive partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) with the PR(a,b,c,d,e) type channel. Due to the proposed PRML, less than $2{\times}10^{-4}$ of the bit error rate (BER) is achieved with radial and tangential tilt margin of over${\mp}0.6{\circ}$ on 25GB disc in 2x speed. The method of an optimum Power control (OPC) for stable writing of various BD-R/RE is proposed. The developed chip contains 14-million transistors in a $60mm^2$ dies, and is fabricated in $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology.

  • In this paper, we present symbol detection methods for decision feedback equalizers (DFE) in trellis coded modulation systems. The proposed symbol detectors improve symbol error rate (SER) by exploiting the coding structure of trellis coded modulation (TCM). For example, for 8-PAM signals the achieved SER with the proposed detection scheme is improved to $2{\times}10^{-5}$ from $2.5{\times}10^{-2}$ of the conventional symbol-by-symbol detector under AWGN channel at 20dB SNR. This SER improvements mitigate error propagation of DFE.and produces significant over-all SER improvement for under multipath channels (for example, from 0.26 to 0.01 and 0.005 under a severe multipath channel 20dB SNR as shown in the simulation result of this paper).

  • We Propose a partial response maximum likelihood(PRML) detection method that improves the performance of the high-density optical storage system. It concurrently adjusts the coefficient of equalizer and reference values of branches in Viterbi detector. For the estimation of asymmetric channel characteristics by the tangential tilt, we exploit sync patterns in each data frame. The simulation result shows it improves the Performance up to 4dB at 10-6 BER compared to conventional adaptive PRML.

  • Wireless communication systems are inevitable for efficient underwater activities. Because of the poor propagation characteristics of light and electromagnetic waves, acoustic waves are generally used for the underwater wireless communication. Although there are many kinds of information type, visual images take an essential role especially for search and identification activities. For this reason, we developed an acoustic-based underwater image transmission system under a dual use technology project supported by MOCIE (Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy). For the application to complicated and time-varying underwater environments all-digital transmitter and receiver systems are investigated. Array acoustic transducers are used at the receiver, which have the center frequency of 32kHz and the bandwidth of 4kHz. To improve transmission speed and quality, various algorithms and systems are used. The system design techniques will be discussed in detail including image compression/ decompression system, adaptive beam- forming, fast RLS adaptive equalizer, ${\partial}/4$ QPSK (Quadrilateral Phase Shift Keying) modulator/demodulator, and convolution coding/ Viterbi. Decoding.

  • In this paper, to increase the throughput for wireless communication, FTN methods that is faster than Nyquist rate are used recently. To improve performance, turbo equalization algorithms that iteratively exchange probabilistic information between soft Viterbi equalizer and LDPC decoder to minimize ISI are applied in this paper. In FTN transmission, the performance depends on roll-off value and number of tabs of SRRC(Square Root Raised Cosine) filter. Therefore, Based on simulation, this paper present optimal number of filter coefficient and tab for various ISI factor of ${\tau}$.

  • In this paper, the system performance with the convolution code using a Viterbi decoding and the one tap LMS equalizer applied to the OFDM system, which is suitable for IEEE 802.1la wireless LAN in indoor wireless channel, is analyzed through computer simulation. Indoor wireless channel is modeled as Rician fading channel, and QPSK and 16QAM scheme are used for subchannel modulation. In Rician fading channel with the power ratio of the direct path signal to the scattered signals, K=5 dB, BER of $10^{-4}$ is satisfied if the SNRs of the QPSK/OFDM and the 16QAM/OFDM are 8.6 dB and 19.2 dB in hard decision and 5.3 dB and 9.8 dB in soft decision, respectively. Compared with convolution code scheme, it is observed that 16QAM/OFDM system with the one tap LMS equalizer has the performance improvement of 8.6 dB and 2 dB in hard decision and soft decision, respectively.
