  • A real-time frame-layer rate control algorithm with a token bucket traffic shaper is proposed for low bit rate video coding. The proposed rate control method uses a non-iterative optimization method for low computational complexity, and performs bit allocation at the frame level to minimize the average distortion over an entire sequence as well as variations in distortion between frames. In order to reduce the quality fluctuation, we use a sliding window scheme which does not require the pre-analysis process. Therefore, the proposed algorithm does not produce time delay from encoding, and is suitable for real-time low-complexity video encoder. Experimental results indicate that the proposed control method provides better visual and PSNR performances than the existing rate control method.

  • Numerous methods can be employed to teach students and farmers on soil science and fertilizer. The cartoon is one of the most effective teaching aids both for instructors and students. Instructor becomes a director of the cartoon to organize the framework of story based on the chapter of lecture. Director should adapt the regular sentence on soil science into the short and concise scenario suitable for the visual expression of the cartoon, followed by the selection of the scene for drawing. Next is to cast the instructor for the role of actor or sometimes supporter. After casting, the director starts to draw each cut of the cartoon in sequence. I published the cartoons in weekly serials in the farmer's newspaper for three years. Each cartoon was composed of eighteen cuts and formatted with the introductory, main and conclusive issues. Cartoon started with dialogues between the cast on subject to stimulate the interest by farmers, inserted the tables and graphs for the scientific knowledge and summarized the chapter. Major contents covered in the cartoons were glossary, nutrient uptake, pH, salt accumulation, moisture, pollution, chemical fertilizer, compost and other general aspects of soils. Cartoons had been very popular serial of the newspaper and are archived in the web for reviewing.

  • This paper presents an ARM-based SOC bus transaction verification IP and the usage experiences in SOC designs. The verification IP is an AMBA AHB protocol checker, which captures legal AHB transactions in FSM-style signal sequence checking routines. This checker can be considered as a reusable verification IP since it does not change unless the bus protocol changes. Our AHB protocol checker is designed to be scalable to any number of AHB masters and reusable for various AMBA-based SOC designs. The keys to the scalability and the reusability are Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), virtual port, and bind operation. This paper describes how OOP, virtual port, and bind features are used to implement AHB protocol checker. Using the AHB protocol checker, an AHB simulation monitor is constructed. The monitor checks the legal bus arbitration and detects the first cycle of an AHB transaction. Then it calls AHB protocol checker to check the expected AHB signal sequences. We integrate the AHB bus monitor into Verilog simulation environment to replace time-consuming visual waveform inspection, and it allows us to find design bugs quickly. This paper also discusses AMBA AHB bus transaction coverage metrics and AHB transaction coverage analysis. Test programs for five AHB masters of an SOC, four channel DMAs and a host interface unit are executed and transaction coverage for DMA verification is collected during simulation. These coverage results can be used to determine the weak point of test programs in terms of the number of bus transactions occurred and guide to improve the quality of the test programs. Also, the coverage results can be used to obtain bus utilization statistics since the bus cycles occupied by each AHB master can be obtained.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to research current trends of acupuncture treatment of lumbar herniated intervertebral disc using the PubMed database. Methods We set up the search strategy and investigated clinical trials on acupuncture treatment of lumbar herniated intervertebral disc through PubMed search. This study analyzed previous researched papers published from January 1st, 2000 to April 30th, 2014, and classified them by publication year, journal names, types of literature, treatment methods and evaluation scales. To assess the quality of the reviewed literature, randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies were assessed by Cochrane's risk of bias (ROB) tool and non-RCT studies were assessed by risk of bias for non-randomized studies (RoBANS). Results We found 35 studies on the acupuncture treatment of lumbar herniated intervertebral disc. Papers on this topic have been published, on average, three to four times annually in 9 journals since the mid-2000's. The journal with the largest number of publications was Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion, and most of articles were classified as RCT. Acupuncture treatment was performed individually or together with other treatments. The most frequently used pain evaluation index was visual analogue scale (VAS). The index of effective rate was used frequently but there was a lack of objectivity. In regards to the quality of the studies, outcome assessment in RCT showed that random sequence generation, allocation concealment, and the blinding of participants and personnel increase potential of risk of bias. For non-RCT assessment, outcome showed that confounding variable, measurement of intervention were at high risk of bias. Conclusions In order to obtain objective clinical evidence of acupuncture treatment of lumbar herniated intervertebral disc, further clinical studies should be designed to minimize the risk of bias, using STRICTA with larger sample sizes.

  • This paper proposes a method to detect fall action by using stereo images to recognize emergency situation. It uses 3D information to extract the visual information for learning and testing. It uses HMM(Hidden Markov Model) as a recognition algorithm. The proposed system extracts background images from two camera images. It extracts a moving object from input video sequence by using the difference between input image and background image. After that, it finds the bounding rectangle of the moving object and extracts 3D information by using calibration data of the two cameras. We experimented to the recognition rate of fall action with the variation of rectangle width and height and that of 3D location of the rectangle center point. Experimental results show that the variation of 3D location of the center point achieves the higher recognition rate than the variation of width and height.

  • Purpose Through the provision of real time performance information about who is contributing and who is not in Electronic Brainstorming, prior studies evidenced a significant performance gain. However, it has been observed that the quantity-based performance feedback alone does not have enough restrictiveness to guide the performance behavior throughout the idea generation session. We included the notion of goal setting into the process performance feedback mechanism in an effort to regulate performance behavior and to better understand why individuals in Electronic Brainstorming are not obtaining enough stimulation benefits in the group interaction process. Design/methodology/approach We had developed real-time visual process performance feedback and modified to include goal setting. This mechanism visually displays individuals' performances two-dimensionally (quality for each idea vertically and quantity of ideas horizontally along with their goals). As individuals' contributions accumulate, the mechanism reveals performance histories by connecting the sequence of ideas in a time-series format, telling stories of individuals' performances. Then, we compared the performance outcome from this study with the outcomes from two prior studies (i.e., Jung et al., 2010 and Jung, 2014). Findings The results showed that the inclusion of goal setting into the process performance feedback solved the issue in the previous study. That was the lower than expected magnitude of performance enhancement of process performance feedback when compared to that of quantity-based feedback. It appears that goals as a motivational technique provide standards for systematic self-evaluation, serving as a cue to regulate performance behavior by strengthening the linkage between effort and performance. Thus, goals seem to set up a self-fulfilling prophecy, preconditioning better performance. However, the outcome still showed that its performance magnitude is unsatisfactory because the outcome of this study turned out to be close to the outcome of just quantity-based performance feedback in Jung et al.'s (2010) study.

  • Many reported methods assume that the faces in an image or an image sequence have been identified and localization. Face detection from image is a challenging task because of the variability in scale, location, orientation and pose. The difficulties in visual detection and recognition are caused by the variations in viewpoint, viewing distance, illumination. In this paper, we present an efficient linear discriminant for multi-view face detection and face location. We define the training data by using the Fisher`s linear discriminant in an efficient learning method. Face detection is very difficult because it is influenced by the poses of the human face and changes in illumination. This idea can solve the multi-view and scale face detection problems. In this paper, we extract the face using the Fisher`s linear discriminant that has hierarchical models invariant size and background. The purpose of this paper is to classify face and non-face for efficient Fisher`s linear discriminant.

  • Extraction of regions of interest (ROIs) is the first and important step for the applications in computer vision and affects the rest of the application process. However, ROI extraction can be easily affected by the environment such as illumination, camera, etc. Many applications adopt problem-specific knowledge and/or post-processing to correct the error occurred in ROI extraction. In this paper, proposed is a robust framework that could overcome the environmental change and is independent from the rest of the process. The proposed framework uses a differential image and a color distribution to extract ROIs. The color distribution can be learned on-line, which make the framework to be robust to environmental change. Even more, the components of the framework are independent each other, which makes the framework flexible and extensible. The usefulness of the proposed framework is demonstrated with the application of hand region extraction in an image sequence.

  • Objective: This study aimed to investigate the reliability and validity of muscle thickness (MT) and pennation angle (PA) measurements of the ankle muscle, including the tibialis anterior (TA) and the medial gastrocnemius (MGCM), using a hands-free fixed probe and to compare it with the conventional linear probe. Design: Observational inter-rater reliability study. Methods: Thirty-three healthy subjects (20 male, 13 female) were included. In all subjects, ultrasound images were acquired from the TA and MGCM using a hands-free fixed probe and a conventional linear probe in random sequence by two examiners at two time-points within a 7-day interval. MT and PA were calculated on the taken images. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC), 95% confidence intervals, standard error of measurement and the Pearson's correlation coefficient were used to estimate reliability and validity. And also, Bland-Altman plots were generated for a visual representation of MT and PA at the TA and MGCM. Results: The ICC for all intra-rater reliability was 0.943 to 0.995 and that for all inter-rater reliability was 0.928 to 0.993, indicating excellent reliability. A significantly high correlation was observed between MT and PA at the TA and MGCM with use of the hands-free fixed probe and the conventional linear probe (r>0.938; p<0.001). Conclusions: The hands-free fixed probe provided excellent images for measurement of the MT and PA of the TA and MGCM and is a useful device for making clinical measurements of muscle structure without grasping of the probe.
