  • Variation of brain dynamics under Zen meditation has been one of our major research interests for years. One issue encountered is the inaccessibility to the actual meditation level or stage as a reference. In this paper, we propose an alternative strategy for investigating the human brain in response to external flash stimuli during Zen meditation course. To secure a consistent condition of the brain dynamics when applying stimulation, we designed a recording of flash visual evoked potentials (F-VEPs) based on a constant background EEG (electroencephalograph) frontal $\alpha-rhythm$ dominating activities that increase significantly during Zen meditation. Thus the flash-light stimulus was to be applied upon emergence of the frontal $\alpha-rhythm$. The alpha-dependent F-VEPs were then employed to inspect the effect of Zen meditation on brain dynamics. Based on the experimental protocol proposed, considerable differences between experimental and control groups were obtained. Our results showed that amplitudes of P1-N2 and N2-P2 on Cz and Fz increased significantly during meditation, contrary to the F-VEPs of control group at rest. We thus suggest that Zen meditation results in acute response on primary visual cortex and the associated parts.

  • Purpose - This study aims to explore the influence of combining "non-halal" labels with visual and textual warning labels on cigarette packages to induce the intention to quit smoking and boost the stop-smoking campaign. Research design, data, and methodology - This study examines"non-halal" labeling on cigarette packages using an experimental method. A total of 120 smokers, aged 18-23, were chosen from among Universitas Indonesia students. Data obtained were analyzed using ANOVA and T-Test. Results - The use of a "non-halal" label as a warning on cigarette packages is more effective to influence Muslim smokers to quit smoking. The results also suggest that "non-halal" labels more effectively increase intentions to quit smoking when use din combination with textual-visual labels. Conclusions - The study found that the addition of "non-halal" labels in textual or textual-visual warning labels on cigarette packages would significantly increase the intention of Moslems smokers to quit smoking. These results support previous research findings, that if cigarettes are labeled as "non-halal" (haram) products for Moslem teenagers, it will induce them to quit smoking.

  • The ratio of aged class has been increasing gradually not only in Korea, but also in the world since several years ago. As a result, many unexpected social problems started to now. The burden charged to this society is to solve those problems; how to take care of that aged people, how to offer jobs to them, etc. It means that the study about the aged class should be done soon. Due to that need, this thesis is wrote out. The aim of this thesis is to detect the emotion of aged people and establish a certain algorithm for detecting it. In the whole process of experiment and analysis, I used HRV(Heart Rate Variability) data since the heart is a representative which is controlled by the ANS(autonomic nervous system), and the ANS reflects the changes in emotion. After stimulating the aged people with the authorized pictures which induce different emotions each. 1 measured HRV of those aged. The HRV data is then analyzed in the two domain area, time and frequency. 1 guessed that the result would show some certain differences according to the pictures and it was shown from the experiment. Seeing the result, HRV was changed by what the aged felt looking at the pictures. Then it also means that visual stimulation influence on the has of the aged people.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of receiver's moving speed and pass types on anticipation timing response. Ten subjects were required to make a total of 24 passes in coincidence with an experimentally manipulated moving light signal in randomly three different conditions by performing chest and bound pass. Results of analyses revealed AE, CE, and VE increased as moving velocity became constant-acceleration condition. In addition, chest pass was more accuracy and consistency than bound pass on AE and CE. These findings indicated that moving velocity and pass type served as the major determination of coincident timing response on passing in basketball.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to propose the useful method to improve service affective quality by analyzing customer's service experiences and evaluating the satisfaction of the affective sensual responses to physical stimulus. Methods: While customers were experiencing the service, the customers evaluated the subjective satisfaction for the visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory and gustatory senses on a scale of -3 to 3 at each stage of the service process. The customers described the positive and negative feelings about each sensory stimulus, and explained the reason for the subjective evaluation scores. After experiencing the whole service, customers evaluated the affective quality of the whole service. Results: The proposed method was applied to coffee shops. 35 male and female college students were evaluated for 15 coffee shops in Korea. Multiple regression analysis revealed that auditory and olfactory senses had a greater impact on service affective satisfaction than other senses. Conclusion: This method is useful to identify the factors that affect customer's affective quality and to find the target to improve physical environment more easily than existing methods.

  • This study is concerned with the accuracy and the patterns when different methods was used in interpolation task. Although 3 methods employed the same modality for input (visual) and for output (manual responding), they differed in central processing, which method 1 is relatively more tendency of verbal processing, method 2 is realtively more tendency of spatial processing and method 3 needed a number of switching code (verbal/spatial) performing task. Split-plot design was adopted, which whole plot consisted of methods (3), orientations (horizon, vertical), base-line sizes (300, 500, 700 pixels) and split plot consisted of target locations (1-99). The results showed the anchor effect and the range effect. Method 2, method 3 and method 1 that order was better accuracy. ANOVA showed that the accuracy was significantly influenced by the method, the location of target, and its interactions ($method{\times}location$, $size{\times}location$). Analysis of error data, response time and frequency of under, just, over estimate indicated that a systematic error pattern was made in task and methods changed not only the performance but also the pattern. The results provided support for the importance of the multiple resources theory in accounting for S-C-R compatibility and task performance. They are discussed in terms of multiple resources theory and guidelines for system design is suggested by the S-C-R compatibility.

  • To perceive body movement, the nervous system uses multi-sensory cues such as vision, vestibular signals, and somatosensation. Among the multi-sensory modality, the previous researchers reported that the lower limb somatosensation plays an important role on maintaining postural balance. In this study, we examined the contribution of somatosensory cues to linear motion perception by measuring the detection threshold of the direction of linear motion with and without lower limb somatosensory constraints. Six healthy male volunteers participated in randomly ordered 33 single sinusoidal acceleration trials with the stimulus at 0.25Hz with peak magnitude ranged from 0 to 8mG. After each stimulus, subjects reported their perceived direction of motion by button press. Results showed that the reduced lower limb somatosensation significantly increased perception threshold. Without constraints, mean threshold was $0.82{\pm}0.23mG$, while it was $1.23{\pm}0.35mG$ with reduced lower limb somatosensation. The results suggest that without visual cues, perception of the movement direction strongly depends on the lower limb somatosensory information.

  • In today's society, Monolithic expresses itself as a single featured work with a consistent exterior in the urban environment. In particular, such characteristics of the monolithic work have become increasingly influential in the modern society with the emergence of the minimalism. Monolithic architecture in modern has common feature which is maintaining simple construction format (Mass) with complicated and abundance space (Volume) inside. This simple architecture exterior leads new stimulus which is different from previous format and evokes unique sensibility and thoughts with monumental expressing. Uniformed exterior revealed thru purity of material builds up strong presence by itself. In contract with simple exterior, diverse space is expressed by consistent concept and process. Through this, it shows creating metaphorical space and space-oriented feature. We can interpret modern monolithic architecture as a sensation and alternative against Gestalt architecture in consequence of chasing clarity, visual stimulus and uncertain tendency only. It provides architectural experience by spatial imaginary and unexpected space development to users through exclusivetendency against outside and stressing un-private, we can evaluate its value as a space-oriented construction which helped us to think about space meaning in modern society.

  • Nowadays, some movie theaters provide additional sensory information in 3D movies to enhance visually induced motion perception. However, no studies have investigated how motion perception increases. Thus, in this study, we examined the effect of visual coherent sensory information on visually induced motion perception and quantification of sensory information. A visual stimulus rotated sinusoidally and visual coherent sensory information were applied as vibrations to a subject's foot. We measured the sway of the subject's body by using a force plate and somatosensory bar rotation that represents the subject's perception of the horizon using an encoder. By using this data, we obtained the weight of the sensory information using a Kalman filter. As a result, it was found that subjects rotated the somatosensory bar more when visual coherent vibrations were applied. The weight of vision also increased when visual coherent vibrations were applied. Thus, we can conclude that visual coherent sensory information tends to enhance visually induced motion perception and weight of vision.
