  • The automatic interpretation of awake background electroencephalogram (EEG), consisting of quantitative EEG interpretation and EEG report making, has been developed by the authors based on EEG data visually inspected by an electroencephalographer (EEGer). The present study was focused on the adaptability of the automatic EEG interpretation which was accomplished by the constructive neural network with forgetting factor. The artificial neural network (ANN) was constructed so as to give the integrative decision of the EEG by using the input signals of the intermediate judgment of 13 items of the EEG. The feature of the ANN was that it adapted to any EEGer who gave visual inspection for the training data. The developed method was evaluated based on the EEG data of 57 patients. The re-trained ANN adapted to another EEGer appropriately.

  • Visual images are important elements of the communication of environment in secondary school environment textbooks, which dominate classroom approaches to teaching and learning. This study was to analysed the perspectives of pedagogical and social-pedagogic of visual images in 'global warming' unit of six different Korean environment textbooks. Analysis makes use of the dimensions pedagogical functions, content specialization, social-pedagogic relationships, and abstraction of the visual codes. The results showed that most of the visual images in school environment textbooks tend to establish social-pedagogic relationships with students. The results of our study have implications for textbook authors and secondary environment teachers. We suggest that future studies may focus on students' and teacher's interpretation of visual images new secondary environment textbooks.

  • This study is about the aesthetic function of product design. On the basis of aesthetic characteristics inside the products, the main purpose of this study lies in the interpretation of aesthetic function in terms of provider and receptor. To interpret the aesthetic function of product design, many attempts had been made with theorists who studied the aesthetic function in product modeling. Especially, this study is systemized from Haug's product aesthetic criticism to Vershofen, Loewy, Villeger, Buerdeck, Packard and Sombart's interpretation. Under the point of view of both provider and receptor, this study analyzes the different characteristics of interpretation on the basis of above theorist's concept. This analysis is able to demonstrate the rationales of the demands in current prestigious design and understanding of concrete design principals. Accordingly, the future study will be proceeded with interpretation of aesthetics functions in prestigious design.

  • This study intends to understand the visual experience of architectural space generated by users' movement based on the interpretation of visual properties. An analytic theory of Isovist is suggested for the objective and comparable measurement for such visual experience, and a computer program for the analysis has been proposed as well. By using the analytical theory and computer program, eight houses designed by Adolf Loos and Le Corbusler are analyzed for the purpose of understanding the visual characteristics of the Modern Architecture and the contemporaries. The result shows that, while the architectural space of Loos emphasizes personal privacy as for being livable spaces, the architectural space of Corbusier emphasizes users' movement as for including diverse visual arrays. These commensurable results exhibit that the analytical tool and research frame suggested in this study can be a competitive tool for such analysis.

  • Pulmonary emphysema is a cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Emphysema can be accurately diagnosed via CT. The severity of emphysema can be assessed using visual interpretation or quantitative analysis. Various studies on emphysema using deep learning have also been conducted. Although the classification of emphysema has proven clinically useful, there is a need to improve the reliability of the measurement.

  • The magnetic field due to a current is one of the core concepts in electromagnetism which has been taught in secondary science education. In addition, it is a representative example of using visual representations to explain the relation between invisible physical quantities; current and magnetic field. In this study we investigated middle school students' representational competence into three components; interpretation, construction, and application of visual representations. According to the analysis, more than 75 % of the respondents interpreted the meaning of the arrows for current and magnetic field correctly. However, half of them confused the movement of electric charges with the direction of magnetic field. Over 60 % of the students constructed the magnetic field representation as circular closed curves, but many of them could not express the density of field lines properly. In application of visual representations, more than half failed to draw the direction of compass needle correctly. The scores were in order of interpretation, construction and application. There were also significant correlations among three components of representational competence. More attention and research on students' representational competence and effective use of visual representations is needed to better support science learning and teaching.

  • Text has evolved along with the history of art as a means of communicating human intentions and emotions. In addition, text visualization artworks have been combined with the social form and contents of new media to produce social messages and related meanings. Recently, in text visualization artworks combined with digital media, communication forms with viewers are changing instantly and interactively, and viewers are actively participating in creating artworks by direct engagement. Interactive text visualization with additional viewer's interaction, generates external dynamics from text shapes and internal dynamics from embedded meanings of text. The purpose of this study is to propose a visual dynamics model to express the dynamics of text and to implement a text visualization system based on the model. It uses the deconstruction of the imaged text to create an interactive text visualization system that reacts to the gestures of the viewer in real time. Visual Transformation synchronized with the intentions of the viewer prevent the text from remaining in the interpretation of language symbols and extend the various meanings of the text. The visualized text in various forms shows visual dynamics that interpret the meaning according to the cultural background of the viewer.

  • The automatic detection of artifacts and vigilance level as for pre-processing of the automatic EEG interpretation are discussed. The equations for detecting artifacts and vigilance level were determined such that they would conform to the procedures that an EEGer (one of the authors, H.S.) usually adopts for visual inspection of the actual EEG record. The automatic EEG interpretation was found to be improved by the newly developed pre-processing method even will artifact contamination or in drowsy condition of the subjects.

  • The purpose of exhibition at museum is to provide the space of aesthetic interpretation of arts for visitors as well as performing the role of communications characterized by various elements. Such elements as visual, spacial and physical factors influence the visitors movement directly, on aesthetic interpretation of arts and these elements would be important for design of space, on considering of promoting the relationship between the art exhibition and visitors. Visitor's movement would be influenced by the property of the art materials, the space shape and the situations of environments, and these elements are important to plan the design of exhibition on museum. The aim of this study is to exam the early stage's points of factors and to standard in basic level for visitors behaviors, through surveying the visitors movement in the museum and analysing the space, in order to find out the factors influencing the aesthetic interpretation of arts and the characteristics of physical properties of art materials exhibited.

  • Throughout the history of architecture, sometimes the main focus of design was determined by a particular visual representation method, and other times a particular form of visual representation method was required by perception of a particular architectural issue or an architectural form or idea. That is why the visual representation method of architects becomes an important means of reading the flow of idea and thinking behind architecture. This study is an investigation on the relation between architectural thinking and visual representation method expressed through the conceptual drawings by avant-garde architects of the 1970s and 80s, a period of the emergence of postmodernism. Rather than proving the objective reality regarded important by traditional architectural drawing, attempts are made to express the design concept in which the project has its base. Such interpretation and explanation regarding the concept become the main interest of the drawing. It is not that the architecture itself was not expressed in the contents, but it may not be the main subject of expression in the drawing. The value of architectural drawing recovers its value as an art work in itself, as a means of communication, and as an important conceptual tool in the design process. It can be seen that the visual representation method in postmodern architectural drawings is breaking free of the traditional objective depiction of matter and is changing and developing as a design tool of the architect.
