  • The purpose of this study is to review the concept and thinking structure of deconstruction theoretically and thereupon, analyze the visual beauty and wearable comfort of the clothing and further, discuss the aesthetic characteristics and values of the decentering phenomenon in the 21st century fashion. Deconstruction provides for an cognitive framework whereby we could comprehensively review the difficult-to-understand and imprudent creativity unravelling in the name of the post-modernism as well as the ambiguous visual beauty and wearable comfort of our contemporary fashion. In particular, deconstruction refuses such concepts involving the relationship between the conventional clothing and its components as order, symmetry, balance, harmony, perfection and simplicity and instead, attaches some sense of value to such relatively inferior concepts as disorder, asymmetry, unbalance, disharmony, imperfection and complexity, and thus, reflects them in the modes of aesthetic representations to create new aesthetics and expand the expressive potential.

  • Icon is a small graphic which represents a particular function in computer interface. Comprehension and learning of icons are needed for using them because they represent some meanings. This study was conducted to examine which were more important factors in using icons. First, representational characteristics of icons were examined. Second, using a eyetracker, the way of coding of redundant display was examined which removed obscurity of display and gave more meaning to a user. Icons using attribute of object and direct discription of action were more efficient than icons of other representational form in comprehension. Redundant display was proved to have some advantages, especially when the icons had low familarity. Visual information processing of icons were discussed according to familarity and learning.

  • The design of children's hospitals is highly dependent on color schemes. As a space shared together by both adults and children, the design of children's hospitals require color coordination that takes account of the users' characteristics. However, because the majority of prior research on color perception has focused overly on the emotional aspects, there is a necessity for more rational and scientific analyses to identify the characteristics of the visual perception of colors. Adopting this perspective in analyzing the characteristics of the visual perception of colors, this study aims to move beyond the abstract to focus on more objective methods, such as eye-tracking experiments, to examine the characteristics of hospital visitors' visual attention with respect to colors. Visual perception tracking experiment was conducted on the 2 chosen experimental images with a target group made up of adults and children, the following results were found. Firstly, spaces created with the preference colors of the different groups were found to develop a characteristic of developing higher attention. Secondly, observing the common tendencies for attention for adults and children, the highest region for visual concentration was formed towards the middle, as attention progresses to lower stages visually focused area changes in the order of upper-middle, left and right, and lower regions and edge regions show characteristics of not triggering attention Thirdly, it is understood that children's level of attention drops a lot faster than adults when identifying space therefore it is suspected that children need more elaborate color coordination than adults.

  • The MPI CyberMotion Simulator provides a unique motion platform, as it features an anthropomorphic robot with a large workspace, combined with an actuated cabin and a linear track for lateral movement. This paper introduces the simulator as a tool for studying human perception, and compares its characteristics to conventional Stewart platforms. Furthermore, an experimental evaluation is presented in which multimodal human control behavior is studied by identifying the visual and vestibular responses of participants in a roll-lateral helicopter hover task. The results show that the simulator motion allows participants to increase tracking performance by changing their control strategy, shifting from reliance on visual error perception to reliance on simulator motion cues. The MPI CyberMotion Simulator has proven to be a state-of-the-art motion simulator for psychophysical research to study humans with various experimental paradigms, ranging from passive perception experiments to active control tasks, such as driving a car or flying a helicopter.

  • Rapid object recognition is one of the main stream research themes focusing to reveal how human recognizes object and interacts with environment in natural world. This field of study is of consequence in that it is highly important in evolutionary perspective to quickly see the external objects and judge their characteristics to plan future reactions. In this study, we investigated how human detect natural scene objects and categorize them in a limited time frame. We applied Magnetoencepahlogram (MEG) while participants were performing detection (e.g. object vs. texture) or basic-level categorization (e.g. cars vs. dogs) tasks to track the dynamic interaction in human brain for rapid object recognition process. The results revealed that detection and categorization involves different temporal and functional connections that correlated for the successful recognition process as a whole. These results imply that dynamics in the brain are important for our interaction with environment. The implication from this study can be further extended to investigate the effect of subconscious emotional factors on the dynamics of brain interactions during the rapid recognition process.

  • Walking is an eco-friendly and sustainable means of transportation that promotes health and endurance. Despite the positive health benefits of walking, pedestrian safety is a serious problem in Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate with various studies to reduce pedestrian-vehicle crashes. In this study, the cognitive characteristics affecting pedestrian-vehicle crashes were considered by applying deep learning semantic segmentation. The main results are as follows. First, it was found that the risk of pedestrian-vehicle crashes increased when the ratio of buildings among cognitive factors increased and when the ratio of vegetation and the ratio of sky decreased. Second, the humps were shown to reduce the risk of pedestrian-related collisions. Third, the risk of pedestrian-vehicle crashes was found to increase in areas with many neighborhood roads with lower hierarchy. Fourth, traffic lights, crosswalks, and traffic signs do not have a practical effect on reducing pedestrian-vehicle crashes. This study considered existing physical neighborhood environmental factors as well as factors in cognitive aspects that comprise the visual elements of the streetscape. In fact, the cognitive characteristics were shown to have an effect on the occurrence of pedestrian- related collisions. Therefore, it is expected that this study will be used as fundamental research to create a pedestrian-friendly urban environment considering cognitive characteristics in the future.
