  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to observe the effect of balanced acupuncture on herniated intervertebral disc of lumbar spine patients. Methods : We investigated 23 cases of in-patients with acute & subacute herniated intervertebral disc of lumbar spine in oriental hospital, and divided patients into two groups. We treated one group(12 people) by complex oriental medical treatment with Balanced acupuncture, and the other group(11 people) by complex oriental medical treatment without Balanced acupuncture. To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment applied for two groups, we used visual analog scale(VAS) and rating scale for low back pain at admission and discharge. Results : 1. In balanced acupuncture group and control group, compared with baseline and final. VAS was significantly improved. 2. In Balanced acupuncture group and control group, compared with baseline and final. Rating scale for low back pain was significantly improved. 3. VAS and rating scale for low back pain improvement rate in balanced acupuncture group were no statistical significance compared with control group. Conclusions : Balanced acupuncture might be used for relieving symptoms related with herniated intervertebral disc of lumbar spine, but it's no statistical significance.

  • Objective : The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility, safety and effectiveness of radiofrequency neurotomy[RFN] for remnant pain after vertebroplasty for the treatment of severe compression fracture. Methods : 25 patients with remnant pain after vertebroplasty for one level severe compression fracture were treated by RFN. The severe compression fractures were defined to the vertebrae which less than 50% of their original heights have collapsed. Pain relief was evaluated at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 months after the procedure using a visual analog scale[VAS]. Results : Successful outcome was determined if pain reduction exceeded 50% on the VAS at 6 weeks. Six of the 25 patients did not respond favorably to RFN [pain reduction less than 50%], and nineteen patients showed successful responses. Mean VAS score was decreased from 5.48 to 2.96 at 6 weeks. Conclusion : The radiofrequency neurotomy may be both feasible and useful treatment for the remnant pain after vertebroplasty. However long-term follow up is needed to confirm the effectiveness.

  • Objectives : This is a clinical report about the 47-year-old female patient with Trigeminal Neuralgia(TN) treated by oriental medicine treatment including Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture therapy(BVP), without any western medical treatment. Methods : The patient was treated by acupuncture, herb medication, and BVP. The improvement of the patient was judged by Visual Analog Scale(VAS). Results : The pain was gradually reduced and VAS became 0 after 8 days of treatment. Since then the pain didn't reappeared for 6 months. Conclusions : Oriental medicine treatment including BVP was very effective to improve the TN patient's symptoms. It is necessary to have more observation and many cases of patients with TN.

  • Objective: The objective of this study is to observe the effect of anti-inflammatory herbal acupuncture on the Supraspinatus Tendinosis and subdeltoid bursitis Methods : Anti-inflammatory herbal acupuncture, A-Shi Point, Sa-am acupunture were used to treat shoulder pain. We evaluated the patient through VAS(Visual Analog Scale) daily and Physical Examinations Results & Conclusions : After 12 days of treatment, shoulder pain was decreased from VAS9 to VAS1 and the patient showed nearly full ROM(range of movement). In shoulder pain, oriental treatment is good method for pain relief and better movement.

  • Purpose : This study was aimed to examine the Influence of PNF indirect treatment for frozen shoulder patient Methods : Frozen shoulder patient was measured range of motion test of shoulder joint, visual analog scale(VAS) for pain and clean up the mirror activity at pre intervention and post-intervention in 2 weeks. Results : The ROM, activities of shoulder were increased and decreased VAS point for pain after treatments. Conclusion : We found that PNF indirect treatment could improve ROM and functions of shoulder and pain for frozen shoulder patient.

  • Objectives: This case report describes good clinical progress in a patient with symptoms related to angina pectoris treated with a herbal medication. Methods: The 66-year-old male patient hospitalized in Chonnam National University Hospital (CNUH) in May 2020 for symptoms of dyspnea and chest pain was diagnosed with angina pectoris, medicated, underwent PCI in August 2020, and continued to take the medicine prescribed at CNUH during hospitalization. Korean medical treatments, including herbal medicines (Saengmaeg-san-hap-Bojungikgi-tang-gami, Yeonggyechulgam-tang), acupuncture, and cupping therapy were administered for 22 days. Symptom severity was assessed with a daily visual analog scale (VAS) for dyspnea and chest pain and standard deviation of NN (SDNN) score of heart rate variability. Results: Post-treatment, severity of dyspnea, chest pain, and fatigue reduced from VAS 7 to VAS 2, VAS 6 to VAS 1, and VAS 7 to VAS 1, respectively. The SDNN score improved from 16.474 ms to 23.270 ms. There were no side effects from Korean medicine treatment. Conclusion: Traditional Korean treatment could effectively treat symptoms related to angina pectoris.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea and pulse energy of Chon, Gwan and Cheok. Methods The subjects of this study who had certain range of dysmenorrhea symptom. The degree of dysmenorrhea were assessed by Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Multidimensional Verbal Rating Scale (MVRS), Cox Menstrual Symptom Scale (CMSS) and measured by 3D Blood Pressure Pulse Analyzer(3D-MAC) tests at menstruation start date. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results : The induced results are as follows; The induced results are as follows 1. There were no significant relationship between the pulse energy and the sum values of VAS, MVRS and checking part of severity of CMSS. 2. The frequency domain of CMSS were significantly associated with pulse energy. 3. In linear regression models, the model of Left Chon had the especially highest value of explanatory power. (R 2 = 0.517) Conclusions : The pulse energy changes are related to the symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea.

  • Objectives: This study aims to report the effect of Korean medicine treatments on a patient with secondary dysmenorrhea caused by Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich Syndrome (HWWS). Methods: We treated the patient who had secondary dysmenorrhea caused by HWWS, with acupuncture, herbal medicines, pharmacopuncture and hyperthermia therapy at ⃝⃝Hospital of Korean Medicine from July 9th 2016 to September 8th 2016. We evaluated changes of symptoms by Visual analog scale score (VAS), Multidimensional verbal rating scale (MVRS) and Verbal rating scale (VRS). Results: After treatments, the clinical symptoms such as dysmenorrhea (lower abdominal pain & lower back pain), lower abdominal fullness were significantly improved, VAS was decreased, but the improvement of scores on MVRS, VRS were unclear. Conclusions: This case report shows that Korean medical treatment is effective to treat secondary dysmenorrhea caused by HWWS.
