Mental similarities between the traditional Korean costume and geometric abstraction art (한국 전통복식과 기하추상 예술의 정신적 유사성)

  • Geometric abstract art has been a persistent form since ancient times and is defined in modernity as a genre of abstract painting. According to previous studies, the geo- metric structure of traditional Korean costume possesses uniqueness based on Korean thought and philosophy. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to first derive the characteristics of Wilhelm Worringer's theory, a theorist of geometric abstraction, and then compare the spiritual similarities between the traditional Korean costume and geometric abstract art, with the aim of examining the artistic competitiveness of Hanbok. Photographic materials from domestic and international museums, as well as books published by museums and government agencies, were analyzed. Further, the characteristics of Worringer's theory of the abstract impulse were derived. The results are as follows. First, the external factors are characterized by a single geometric shape on a flat surface with restrained spatial expression. The internal factors include anxiety, comfort from religion or ideology, and the need for a visual refuge for rest. Second, traditional Korean costume and geometric abstraction share common spiritual contexts of artistry, transcendence, and stability according to Worringer's theory. Third, the study of the spiritual similarities between the traditional Korean costume and geometric abstract art through Worringer's theory reveals that the artistry of traditional Korean costume is expressed in universal forms, transcendence as intrinsic origins, and stability as a unique aesthetic consciousness. These findings provide a framework for reinterpreting the originality and universality of traditional Korean costume as Korean cultural content, infused with the characteristics of modern art.

Analysis on Visual Preference Elements of Riverscape Axis (도시하천 류축경의 시각적 선호요소 분석)

  • Recently, improvement of the quality of urban riverscape environment has been emphasized not only by landscape architectural field but also by various professionals in planning and ecology. Regarding to this current movement, the aim of this paper is to highlight major visual elements of riverscape axis as a case study of Shinchon River in Taegu City to suggest some basic guidelines for arranging riverscape in urban area. The study was mainly based on Repertory Grid Development method which was developed in Japan. The method is consist of three steps such as decision of element landscape in study area for slide photos, selection of evaluation items for interview and obstraction of proper evaluation factors. The major findings through this study are as follows; 1) The 12 major visual elements which possibly improve riverscape, based on abstraction of proper evaluation factors, are Dunchi, surface of the water,, equipment of river, buildings near riverside, river vertical and horizontal facilities like bridge, fine view, riverbed, water plant, naturalness, water's edge line, harmony and street trees by order. 2) Total numbers of adjective which describe 12 common factors are 25, such as clean, open, stable, quiet, comfortable, friendly, bright, natural etc. In addition, Dunchi was described 337 times by various adjectives, surface of the water was 200 times and arrangement of river was 146 times which is similar result with the order of 12 influential common factors. 3) Therefore, Dunchi, surface of the water and equipment of river are three most important factors which could create better riverscape. These three factors implies us how we supply good quality of urban river environment for the urban residents.

  • This paper proposes Visual Script Language which can direct a type of motion to 3D human model and create by dragging gesture like as we can express a certain meaning with hand gestures. Traditional motion control technique of articulated figures such as human needs a complex task that draws on highly developed human skills. So it will reduce the amount of motion specification to provide the motion control method that allow users to describe characters' motion at the higher level abstraction. Visual script is the visual gestures to direct various human motions, so users can express the spatial attributes of a motion such as the path of moving with high-level concepts if they use visual script. And we can show that it is possible to control the motion of human model directly and intuitively by development of 3D human motion control system based on visual script.

  • The research of the object-oriented visual programming education is related to investigate the instructional method for computer programming, the process for program development for students, and the suitability analysis and design methodology for program development. In order to develop the educational methodology for the students who have the difficulties to study the computer programming and to enhance the abilities for the development of object-oriented programs, in this paper, we suggest the evaluation metrics to apply and assess for the object-oriented programming education. Also, we introduce the visual programming education methodology and curriculum using Alice programming. The evaluation metrics for the visual programming education suggested in this paper, is accepted when the visual programming languages/tools are used in the programming education to assess and analyze the suitabilities for the programming education for students, so to utilize the analyses for abilities of understanding, abstraction, and program implementation by level.

Emotion of People with Visual Disability for Enhancing Web Accessibility (웹 접근성 향상을 위한 시각장애인과 일반인의 감성 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the emotional responses of people with visual disability with those of normal people and to understand their similarity or differences in order to apply the new understandings into the future research on Web Accessibility Guidelines. For this purpose, a Web survey system was developed using 15 auditorial stimuli prepared based on the Media Taxonomy and 11 emotion measuring criteria selected from the literature review. After developing the system, emotional responses of 31 people with visual disability and 53 normal people were collected through the Web. The results of the survey showed that the emotional responses of people with visual disability were similar to those of normal people, although there were some exceptional cases. Therefore, it is clear that emotional needs of people with disability should be taken count of in the Web accessibility discussions and further in-depth studies on the emotional characteristics of people with disability are necessary.

Speech Recognition by Integrating Audio, Visual and Contextual Features Based on Neural Networks (신경망 기반 음성, 영상 및 문맥 통합 음성인식)

  • The recent research has been focused on fusion of audio and visual features for reliable speech recognition in noisy environments. In this paper, we propose a neural network based model of robust speech recognition by integrating audio, visual, and contextual information. Bimodal Neural Network(BMNN) is a multi-layer perception of 4 layers, each of which performs a certain level of abstraction of input features. In BMNN the third layer combines audio md visual features of speech to compensate loss of audio information caused by noise. In order to improve the accuracy of speech recognition in noisy environments, we also propose a post-processing based on contextual information which are sequential patterns of words spoken by a user. Our experimental results show that our model outperforms any single mode models. Particularly, when we use the contextual information, we can obtain over 90% recognition accuracy even in noisy environments, which is a significant improvement compared with the state of art in speech recognition. Our research demonstrates that diverse sources of information need to be integrated to improve the accuracy of speech recognition particularly in noisy environments.

  • A Visual development framework for embedded system is presented based on virtual prototyping. Embedded systems often are used in life critical situation, where reliability is very important. Time_to_market, correctness, user_friendly_design are another features required for embedded system design. However, embedded systems are today designed with an ad hoc approach that is heavily based on earlier experience with similar products. We believe that new design paradigm is needed and it should be based on the use of formal model and visual system to describe the behavior of the system at a high level abstraction. Virtual prototyping has all the required features. It has the following advantages; correct design, clear interface definition, idea experimentation, increased communication. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of VIP/Sim(Virtual Prototyping Simulator), a visionary development framework for embedded system design. New feature such as state polymorphism is augmented to the de_facto standard formal language, statechart, for enhanced dynamic modeling. Actual design experience with VIP/Sim is also discussed.

An Approach to Designing Visual Forms for Process Control Displays Based on Ecological Interface Design (Ecological Interface Design에 기반한 공정제어 디스플레이의 시각적 표현 설계 방법)

  • 공정제어시스템과 같은 복잡한 시스템을 감시하고 제어하기 위한 정보 디스플레이를 설계하기 위해 두 가지의 세부적인 설계문제를 효과적으로 다루어야 한다. 정보디스플레이에서 표현할 정보의 내용을 파악하고 조직화하는 문제와 그 표현할 정보를 시각적으로 잘 표현하는 문제로 구분이 된다. Ecological Interface Design (EID)는 두 문제를 다루기 위한 이론적 배경지식과 방법을 제공하는 정보디스플레이 설계의 틀이다. EID는 1990년대 초반에 그 개념적 틀이 소개된 이후에 그 유용성이 여러 작업영역과 직무환경에서 입증되어 왔다. 그러나 실제 현장에서 EID의 개념을 활용하는데 있어 큰 어려움으로 지적된 것이 정보의 시각화를 위한 실용적이고 구체적인 원칙과 방법이 부족하다는 점이었다. 또한 EID 개념의 활용에만 집중할 경우 효과적인 정보 디스플레이 설계를 위해 고려되어야 하는 다른 설계 문제들이 쉽게 간과될 가능성도 높다. 이 점은 아직도 EID의 실제적 활용성을 높이는데 큰 약점으로 지적된다. 이 논문에서는 EID의 개요와 장단점을 소개한 후에 이에 기반해서 정보 디스플레이 설계를 종합적으로 다루는 데 도움이 될 수 있는 방법을 소개한다. 특히 이 논문에서는 기능적으로 추상화된 정보의 시각화 및 추상화 관점에서 다른 단계에 있는 정보들간의 목적-수단 관계를 시각화해서 명시화하는 것을 강조한다. 또한 디스플레이 설계 요소에 기반한 설계 프로세스 및 관련 설계 원칙 및 지침의 적절한 활용도 강조한다. 이 논문에서 제안된 방법은 EID의 개념적 틀을 확장하면서 인간 중심적인 정보 디스플레이의 설계하는데 유용한 원칙과 방향성을 정립하는데 도움이 될 것이다.

Single Image-Based 3D Tree and Growth Models Reconstruction

  • In this paper, we present a new, easy-to-generate system that is capable of creating virtual 3D tree models and simulating a variety of growth processes of a tree from a single, real tree image. We not only construct various tree models with the same trunk through our proposed digital image matting method and skeleton-based abstraction of branches, but we also animate the visual growth of the constructed 3D tree model through usage of the branch age information combined with a scaling factor. To control the simulation of a tree growth process, we consider tree-growing attributes, such as branching orders, branch width, tree size, and branch self-bending effect, at the same time. Other invisible branches and leaves are automatically attached to the tree by employing parametric branch libraries under the conventional procedural assumption of structure having a local self-similarity. Simulations with a real image confirm that our system makes it possible to achieve realistic tree models and growth processes with ease.

  • Acceleration of the globalization process as they are internationally accepted, standardized. A lot of somebody started to feel tired of the standards symbols, and like to pursuit the original and natural, and hope that the new interest in the emergence of visual symbols. Dongba (東巴文字) text are Naxi(納西族) Dongba pictograph (象形文字) of a concrete nature in china, Characterized by simplicity, abstraction, associative, interesting, decorative, symbolic etc. These features can quickly identify and satisfy to the people's demand for special aesthetic.
