  • Wind-induced vibrations of buildings can be perceived when movement of objects caused by the vibration is seen. However, movement of objects that would normally be expected to trigger visual perception of building vibrations is not necessarily seen in actual building environments. Therefore, to evaluate habitability to building vibrations, it is necessary to examine the influence of movement of objects on vibration perception taking into account probability of seeing the objects. As the first step in this study, those data necessary to estimate probability of vibration perception from seeing of swaying objects have been measured during normal activities in actual buildings. In addition, statistical analysis of the data has also been carried out. As the second step in this study, the probability distribution of vibration perception by visual sensation is estimated using the series of data measured in the first step. Probability of seeing object is considered in the estimated probability distribution.

  • This paper handles, pitching and rolling posture change detection using the visual image changes due to the road slope conditions. When the moving vehicle is slanted to a direction, the objects in the visual images of the vehicle are moving to up or down and right or left. This is similar to the human's balancing behavior depending on the visual image change detection as well as the vestibular organs and semicircular canal in the ear. The proposes method shows the visual image through the camera can be used for the image information itself and for the posture change detection through the experiments.

  • We present the results of visual double stars speckle observations from 2013 using a Zeiss Double Refractor 60 cm with visual focal length f = 1,078 cm, and CCD SBIG ST-402 MEA. A Bessel V filter with ${\lambda}=550nm$ was placed in front of the CCD camera to reduce the chromatic aberration of the objective lens. The objects selected for this observation were calibration candidates and program stars with separations ranging from 0.9-6 arc second, and were located in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Seeing at Bosscha Observatory is generally 1-2 arc second, imposing a limit on visual double star separation below which the system cannot be resolved by long exposure imaging (longer than ~50 ms). Speckle interferometry methods are used to resolve double stars with separations below the typical size of seeing effects. A series of images were captured in fast short-time exposures (~50 ms) using a CCD camera. The result of our experiment shows that our system can be used to measure separations of 0.9 arc second (for systems with small ${\Delta}m$) and ${\Delta}m{\approx}3.7$ (for wide systems).

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a visual feedbackbased balance training, using force platform biofeedback, on the postural balance of elderly faller. Methods: Fifty one community-dwelling older adults (aged 66-88 years) with a recent history of fall participated in the study. Participants were randomized to an experimental group (EG, n=25) and to a control group (CG, n=26). The EG participated in training sessions three times/week for 6 weeks. Visual feedbackbased balance training with the a computerized force platform with visual feedback screen was used in the experimental group. Static balance (center of gravity) and dynamic balance (Functional reach test, Timed "Up & Go" test, Berg balance scale) were assessed before and after end of training. Results: A significant improvement in static balance and dynamic balance were demonstrated within the EG (p<.05), but not in the CG. Conclusion: Visual feedback-based balance training may be an effective intervention to improve postural balance of elderly fallers.

  • Advertisement signboards on the buildings have functionally a visual value as factor of urban and building design. But it is not easy to find any reasonable principles and regulations, how well the signboards deliver the information of stores to the customers, and how they contribute the visual amenity from the sight of urban landscape. Under this context, this study tries to analyze the information delivery power of signboards in relation to the visual cognition. The analysis method is the Two-Way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) evaluation with factors, such as scale, amount and arrangement of signboards. The scale of letters or figures at Signboards is specified in 3 different sizes such as big, medium and small. The amount is classified into 5 grades from 100% to 20% installation. And the arrangement is divided into orderly and disorderly installation. As the results of the Two-Way ANOVA, the identical scale of signboards is much better for the awareness. And the orderly arrangement shows also the same result. Above all, including these two results, the 80% of installation showed the biggest different result of awareness.

  • The purpose of this study is to recognize the differences of visual evaluation by variations in silhouette of the wide pants. The stimuli are 9 samples: One control group, 3 variations of the width of hem line and 3 variations of the silhouette. The data has been obtained from 57 fashion college students. The data has been analyzed by Factor Analysis, Anova, Scheffe's Test. The results of the study are as follows: The visual evaluation by silhouette of wide pants are composed of 5 factors(i.e., physical characteristics, complexity, attractiveness, originality, and stiffness and softness). Among these factors, the physical characteristic is evaluated to be the most important factor. The straight pants were the most attractive and modern when the width of the hem line was 66cm (1st stage), while the pants were uncomfortable and unwearable when the width of the hem line was 98cm (3rd stage). The bell-bottom pants were evaluated to be the most attractive with the average width of the hem line. When the width of the hem line of the flare pants were too wide, it was uncomfortable and unwearable but had its unique originality. When the width of the hem line was narrow, the visual image changed as the pants' silhouette varied. However, when the width of the hem line was wide, the visual image did not change by silhouette.

  • Hand grip strength has been utilized as an indicator to evaluate the motor ability of hands, responsible for performing multiple body functions. It is however difficult to evaluate other factors (other than hand muscular strength) utilizing the hand grip strength only. The purpose of this study was analyzed the motor ability of hands using EMG and the hand grip strength, simultaneously in order to evaluate concentration, muscular strength reaction time, instantaneous muscular strength change, and agility in response to visual reaction. In results, the average time (and their standard deviations) of muscular strength reaction EMG signal and hand grip strength was found to be $209.6{\pm}56.2$ ms and $354.3{\pm}54.6$ ms, respectively. In addition, the onset time which represents acceleration time to reach 90% of maximum hand grip strength, was $382.9{\pm}129.9$ ms. Results in visual reaction (on) indicate the differences in muscular strength agility and concentration of participants in regards to visual reaction.
