  • To steer a camera is done based on system parameters of the vision system. However, the system parameters when they are used might be different from those when they were measured. As one method to compensate for this problem, this research proposes a gaze-steering method based on LMI(Linear Matrix Inequality) that is robust to variations in the system parameters of the vision system. Simulation results show that the proposed method produces less gaze-tracking error than a contemporary linear method and more stable gaze-tracking error than a contemporary nonlinear method. Moreover, the proposed method is fast enough for realtime processing.

  • This paper proposes a vision-based kinematic control method for mobile robots with camera-on-board. In the previous literature on the control of mobile robots using camera vision information, the forward velocity is set to be a constant, and only the rotational velocity of the robot is controlled. More efficient motion, however, is needed by controlling the forward velocity, depending on the position in the corridor. Thus, both forward and rotational velocities are controlled in the proposed method such that the mobile robots can move faster when the comer of the corridor is far away, and it slows down as it approaches the dead end of the corridor. In this way, the smooth turning motion along the corridor is possible. To this end, visual information using the camera is used to obtain the perspective lines and the distance from the current robot position to the dead end. Then, the vanishing point and the pseudo desired position are obtained, and the forward and rotational velocities are controlled by the LOS(Line Of Sight) guidance law. Both numerical and experimental results are included to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents a novel range-free localization algorithm based on quantum particle swarm optimization. The proposed algorithm is capable of estimating the distance between two non-neighboring sensors for multi-hop heterogeneous wireless sensor networks where all nodes' communication ranges are different. Firstly, we construct a new cumulative distribution function of expected hop progress for sensor nodes with different transmission capability. Then, the distance between any two nodes can be computed accurately and effectively by deriving the mathematical expectation of cumulative distribution function. Finally, quantum particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to improve the positioning accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is superior in the localization accuracy and efficiency when used in random and uniform placement of nodes for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks.

  • Various scanning systems have been studied in many industrial areas to acquire a range data or to reconstruct an explicit 3D model. Currently optical technology has been used widely by virtue of noncontactness and high-accuracy. In this paper, we describe a 3D laser scanning system developped to reconstruct the 3D surface of a large-scale object such as a curved-plate of ship-hull. Our scanning system comprises of 4ch-parallel laser vision modules using a triangulation technique. For multi laser vision, calibration method based on least square technique is applied. In global scanning, an effective method without solving difficulty of matching problem among the scanning results of each camera is presented. Also minimal image processing algorithm and robot-based calibration technique are applied. A prototype had been implemented for testing.

  • The present study describes neural networks for stereoscopic vision, which are applied to identifying human speech. In speech recognition based on stereoscopic vision neural networks (SVNN), the similarities are first obtained by comparing input vocal signals with standard models. They are then given to a dynamic process in which both competitive and cooperative processes are conducted among neighboring similarities. Through the dynamic processes, only one winner neuron is finally detected. In a comparative study, the two-layered SVNN was 7.7% higher in recognition accuracies than the hidden Markov model (HMM). From the evaluation results, it was noticed that SVNN outperformed the existing HMM recognizer.

  • This paper presents a navigation system based on the tactical communication and vision system in outdoor environments which is applied to unmanned robot for perimeter surveillance operations. GPS errors of robot are compensated by the reference station of C2(command and control) vehicle and WiBro(Wireless Broadband) is used for the communication between two systems. In the outdoor environments, GPS signals can be easily blocked due to trees and buildings. In this environments, however, vision system is very efficient because there are many features. With the feature MAP around the operation environments, the robot can estimate the position by the image matching and pose estimation. In the navigation system, thus, operation modes is switched by navigation manager according to some environment conditions. The experimental results show that the unmanned robot can estimate the position very accurately in outdoor environment.

  • We have been studying the next generation of video creation solution based on TVML (TV program Making Language) technology. TVML is a well-known scripting language for computer animation and a TVML Player interprets the script to create video content using real-time 3DCG and synthesized voices. TVML has a long history proposed back in 1996 by NHK, however, the only available Player has been the one made by NHK for years. We have developed a new TVML Player from scratch and named it T2V (Text-To-Vision) Player. Due to the development from scratch, the code is compact, light and fast, and extendable and portable. Moreover, the new T2V Player performs not only a playback of TVML script but also a Text-To-Vision conversion from input written in XML format or just a mere plane text to videos by using 'Text-filter' that can be added as a plug-in of the Player. We plan to make it public as freeware from early 2009 in order to stimulate User-Generated-Content and a various kinds of services running on the Internet and media industry. We think that our T2V Player would be a key technology for upcoming new movement.

  • Multiplexing information over parallel data channels based on RF MIMO concept is possible to achieve considerable data rates over large transmission ranges with just a single transmitting element. Visual multiplexing MIMO techniques will send independent streams of bits using the multiple elements of the light transmitter array and recording over a group of camera pixels can further enhance the data rates. The proposed system is a combination of the reliance on computer vision algorithms for tracking and OOK cell frame modulation. LED array are controlled to transmit message in the form of digital information using ON-OFF signaling with ON-OFF pulses (ON = bit 1, OFF = bit 0). A camera captures image frames of the array which are then individually processed and sequentially decoded to retrieve data. To demodulated data transmission, a motion tracking algorithm is implemented in OpenCV (Open source Computer Vision library) to classify the transmission pattern. One of the most advantages of proposed architecture is Computer Vision (CV) based image analysis techniques which can be used to spatially separate signals and remove interferences from ambient light. It will be the future challenges and opportunities for mobile communication networking research.

  • In this paper, a practical technique for correction of a distorted image for vision-based localization of ubiquitous mobile robot. The localization of mobile robot is essential and is realized by using camera vision system. In order to wide the view angle of camera, the vision system includes a fish-eye lens, which distorts the image. Because a mobile robot moves rapidly, the image processing should he fast to recognize the localization. Thus, we propose the practical correction technique for a distorted image, verify the Performance by experimental test.

  • Recently, many unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) have been developed and researched for various fields such as the military, environment, and robotics. In order to perform purpose specific tasks, common autonomous navigation technologies are needed. Obstacle avoidance is important for safe autonomous navigation. This paper describes a vector field histogram+ (VFH+) based obstacle avoidance method that uses the monocular vision of an unmanned surface vehicle. After creating a polar histogram using VFH+, an open space without the histogram is selected in the moving direction. Instead of distance sensor data, monocular vision data are used for make the polar histogram, which includes obstacle information. An object on the water is recognized as an obstacle because this method is for USV. The results of a simulation with sea images showed that we can verify a change in the moving direction according to the position of objects.
