When surgical instruments are tracked in an image-guided surgical navigation system, a stereo vision system with high accuracy is generally used, which is called optical tracker. However, this optical tracker has the disadvantage that a line-of-sight between the tracker and surgical instrument must be maintained. Therefore, to complement the disadvantage of optical tracking systems, an internal vision sensor is attached to a surgical instrument in this paper. Monitoring the target marker pattern attached on patient with this vision sensor, this surgical instrument is possible to be tracked even when the line-of-sight of the optical tracker is occluded. To verify the system's effectiveness, a series of basic experiments is carried out. Lastly, an integration experiment is conducted. The experimental results show that rotational error is bounded to max $1.32^{\circ}$ and mean $0.35^{\circ}$, and translation error is in max 1.72mm and mean 0.58mm. Finally, it is confirmed that the proposed tool tracking method using an internal vision sensor is useful and effective to overcome the occlusion problem of the optical tracker.
This paper describes a procedure of the map-based localization for mobile robots by using a sensor fusion technique in structured environments. A combination of various sensors with different characteristics and limited sensibility has advantages in view of complementariness and cooperation to obtain better information on the environment. In this paper, for robust self-localization of a mobile robot with a monocular camera and a laser structured light sensor, environment information acquired from two sensors is combined and fused by a Bayesian sensor fusion technique based on the probabilistic reliability function of each sensor predefined through experiments. For the self-localization using the monocular vision, the robot utilizes image features consisting of vertical edge lines from input camera images, and they are used as natural landmark points in self-localization process. However, in case of using the laser structured light sensor, it utilizes geometrical features composed of corners and planes as natural landmark shapes during this process, which are extracted from range data at a constant height from the navigation floor. Although only each feature group of them is sometimes useful to localize mobile robots, all features from the two sensors are simultaneously used and fused in term of information for reliable localization under various environment conditions. To verify the advantage of using multi-sensor fusion, a series of experiments are performed, and experimental results are discussed in detail.
This paper presents a vision-based relative pose estimation algorithm and its validation through both numerical and hardware experiments. The algorithm and the hardware system were simultaneously designed considering actual experimental conditions. Two estimation techniques were utilized to estimate relative pose; one was a nonlinear least square method for initial estimation, and the other was an extended Kalman Filter for subsequent on-line estimation. A measurement model of the vision sensor and equations of motion including nonlinear perturbations were utilized in the estimation process. Numerical simulations were performed and analyzed for both the autonomous docking and formation flying scenarios. A configuration of LED-based beacons was designed to avoid measurement singularity, and its structural information was implemented in the estimation algorithm. The proposed algorithm was verified again in the experimental environment by using the Autonomous Spacecraft Test Environment for Rendezvous In proXimity (ASTERIX) facility. Additionally, a laser distance meter was added to the estimation algorithm to improve the relative position estimation accuracy. Throughout this study, the performance required for autonomous docking could be presented by confirming the change in estimation accuracy with respect to the level of measurement error. In addition, hardware experiments confirmed the effectiveness of the suggested algorithm and its applicability to actual tasks in the real world.
Recently, monitoring of two-body ground vehicles carrying extremely hazardous materials has been considered as one of the most important national issues. This issue induces large cost in terms of national economy and social benefit. To monitor and counteract accidents promptly, an efficient methodology is required. For accident monitoring, GPS can be utilized in most cases. However, it is widely known that GPS cannot provide sufficient continuity in urban cannons and tunnels. To complement the weakness of GPS, this paper proposes an accident monitoring method based on a monocular vision sensor. The proposed method estimates angular acceleration from a sequence of image frames captured by a monocular vision sensor. The possibility of using angular acceleration is investigated to determine the occurrence of accidents such as jackknifing and rollover. By an experiment based on actual measurements, the feasibility of the proposed method is evaluated.

The intelligent sensory system is required to ensure the accurate welding performance. This paper describes the development of an intelligent vision sensor for the robotic laser welding. The sensor system includes a PC based vision camera and a stripe-type laser diode. A set of robust image processing algorithms are implemented. The laser-stripe sensor can measure the profile of the welding object and obtain the seam line. Moreover, the working distance of the sensor can be changed and other configuration is adjusted accordingly. The robot, the seam tracking system, and CW Nd:YAG laser are used for the laser welding robot system. The simple and efficient control scheme of the whole system is also presented. The profile measurement and the seam tracking experiments were carried out to validate the operation of the system.
In this paper, we propose a vision system using a field programmable gate array(FPGA) and a smart vision chip. The output of the vision chip is varied by illumination conditions. This chip is suitable as a surveillance system in a dynamic environment. However, because the output swing of a smart vision chip is too small to definitely confirm the warning signal with the FPGA, a modification was needed for a reliable signal. The proposed system is based on a transmission control protocol/internet protocol(TCP/IP) that enables monitoring from a remote place. The warning signal indicates that some objects are too near.

An integrated system composed of guidance, navigation and control (GNC) system for autonomous proximity operations and the docking of two spacecraft was developed. The position maneuvers were determined through the integration of the state-dependent Riccati equation formulated from nonlinear relative motion dynamics and relative navigation using rendezvous laser vision (Lidar) and a vision sensor system. In the vision sensor system, a switch between sensors was made along the approach phase in order to provide continuously effective navigation. As an extension of the rendezvous laser vision system, an automated terminal guidance scheme based on the Clohessy-Wiltshire state transition matrix was used to formulate a "V-bar hopping approach" reference trajectory. A proximity operations strategy was then adapted from the approach strategy used with the automated transfer vehicle. The attitude maneuvers, determined from a linear quadratic Gaussian-type control including quaternion based attitude estimation using star trackers or a vision sensor system, provided precise attitude control and robustness under uncertainties in the moments of inertia and external disturbances. These functions were then integrated into an autonomous GNC system that can perform proximity operations and meet all conditions for successful docking. A six-degree of freedom simulation was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the integrated system.
This paper discusses the method of vision based sensor fusion system for biped robot walking. Most researches on biped walking robot have mostly focused on walking algorithm itself. However, developing vision systems for biped walking robot is an important and urgent issue since biped walking robots are ultimately developed not only for researches but to be utilized in real life. In the research, systems for environment recognition and tole-operation have been developed for task assignment and execution of biped robot as well as for human robot interaction (HRI) system. For carrying out certain tasks, an object tracking system using modified optical flow algorithm and obstacle recognition system using enhanced template matching and hierarchical support vector machine algorithm by wireless vision camera are implemented with sensor fusion system using other sensors installed in a biped walking robot. Also systems for robot manipulating and communication with user have been developed for robot.
In this paper, we present a hybrid inertial and vision-based tracking system for VR applications. One of the most important aspects of VR (Virtual Reality) is providing a correspondence between the physical and virtual world. As a result, accurate and real-time tracking of an object's position and orientation is a prerequisite for many applications in the Virtual Environments. Pure vision-based tracking has low jitter and high accuracy but cannot guarantee real-time pose recovery under all circumstances. Pure inertial tracking has high update rates and full 6DOF recovery but lacks long-term stability due to sensor noise. In order to overcome the individual drawbacks and to build better tracking system, we introduce the fusion of vision-based and inertial tracking. Sensor fusion makes the proposal tracking system robust, fast, accurate, and low jitter and noise. Hybrid tracking is implemented with Kalman Filter that operates in a predictor-corrector manner. Combining bluetooth serial communication module gives the system a full mobility and makes the system affordable, lightweight energy-efficient. and practical. Full 6DOF recovery and the full mobility of proposal system enable the user to interact with mobile device like PDA and provide the user with natural interface.
A windshield wiper system plays a key part in assurance of driver's safety at rainfall. However, because quantity of rain and snow vary irregularly according to time and velocity of automotive, a driver changes speed and operation period of a wiper from time to time in order to secure enough visual field in the traditional windshield wiper system. Because a manual operation of wiper distracts driver's sensitivity and causes inadvertent driving, this is becoming direct cause of traffic accident. Therefore, this paper presents the basic architecture of vision-based smart wiper system and the rain sensing algorithm that regulate speed and interval of wiper automatically according to quantity of rain or snow. Also, this paper introduces the fuzzy wiper control algorithm based on human's expertise, and evaluates performance of suggested algorithm in the simulator model. Especially the vision sensor can measure wider area relatively than the optical rain sensor, hence, this grasps rainfall state more exactly in case disturbance occurs.
