In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in $Tm^{3+}$ doped crystals and glasses due to their potential applications as near infrared lasers and infrared to visible upconversion lasers for use in different fields such as medical surgery, eye safe laser radar, data storage, barcode reading and so on. Thulium ions have stable excited levels suitable for emitting blue upconversion fluorescence. (omitted)
Photocatalysts are advanced materials which accelerate the photoreaction by providing ordinary reactions with other pathways. The catalysts have various advantages, such as low-cost, low operating temperature and pressure, and long-term use. They are applied to environmental and energy field, including the air and water purification, water splitting for hydrogen production, sterilization and self-cleaning surfaces. However, commercial photocatalysts only absorb ultraviolet light between 100 and 400 nm of wavelength which comprises only 5% in sunlight due to the wide band gap. In addition, rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs reduces the photocatalytic performance. Recently, studies on blackening photocatalysts by laser, thermal, and plasma treatments have been conducted to enhance the absorption of visible light and photocatalytic activity. The disordered structures could yield mid-gap states and vacancies could cause charge carrier trapping. Herein, liquid phase plasma (LPP) is adopted to synthesize Ag-doped black ZnO for the utilization of visible-light. The physical and chemical characteristics of the synthesized photocatalysts are analyzed by SEM/EDS, XRD, XPS and the optical properties of them are investigated using UV/Vis DRS and PL analyses. Lastly, the photocatalytic activity was evaluated using methylene blue as a pollutant.
The detection of carious lesions is a key point to apply appropriate preventive measures or operative treatment of dental caries. A laser fluorescence device DIAGNOdent$^{(R)}$ (KaVo, Biberach, Germany) has also been shown to be of additional clinical value in the detection of initial caries. This report focus on the DIAGNOdent$^{(R)}$ for caries detection. DIAGNOdent$^{(R)}$ irradiate visible red light at a wavelength of 655 nm to elicit near-infrared fluorescence from caries lesion. This device is known as a reproducible method for caries detection, with good sensitivity and specificity especially for caries detection on occlusal and accessible smooth surfaces. DIAGNOdent$^{(R)}$ tended to be more sensitive method of detecting occlusal dentinal caries, however, showed more false-positive diagnoses than the visual inspection. So Clinician should not use the device as a clinician's primary diagnostic method and it is recommended that the device should be used in the decision-making process in relation to the diagnosis of caries as a second opinion in cases of doubt after visual inspection. The trend of modern dentistry would be a preventive approach rather than invasive treatment of the disease. This is possible only with early detection and respective preventive measures, DIAGNOdent$^{(R)}$ can help the changes.
To widen the band gap of ZnO, we have investigated $Zn_{1-x}Mg_xO(ZMO)$ thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition on c-plane sapphire substrates at $500^{\circ}C$. From X-ray diffraction patterns, ZMO films show only the (0002) and (0004) diffraction peaks. It means that the flints have the wurtzite structure. Segregation of ZnO and MgO phases is found in the films with x=0.59. All the samples are highly transparent in the visible region and have a sharp absorption edge in the UV region. The shift of absorption edge to higher energy is observed in the films with higher Mg composition. The excitonic nature of the films is clearly appeared in the spectra for all alloy compositions. The optical band-gap ($E_g$) of ZMO films is obtained from the ${\alpha}^2$ vs Photon energy plot assuming ${\alpha}^2\;\propto$ (hv - $E_g$), where u is the absorption coefficient and hv is the photon energy. The value of $E_g$ increases up to 3.72 eV for the films with x=0.35. It is important to adjust Mg composition control for controlling the band-gap of ZMO films.
ZnO thin films were deposited on glass substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) at various oxygen pressures. We observed structural, electrical and optical properties of ZnO films. Structural properties were analysed by XRD and FE-SEM. Electrical properties for applications of transparent thin film transistors (TTFTs) were measured by hall measurement using van der pauw methods at room temperature. In order to apply in transparent devices, we measured transmittance, and optical bandgap energy was calculated by Tauc's equation. The results showed that ZnO films deposited at 200mTorr oxygen pressure were applicable to channel layers of transparent TFTs. It had high hall mobilities ($52.92cm^2$/V-s) and suitable transmittance at visible wavelength region (above 80%).
$Ga_2O_3$ doped $SnO_2$ thin films were grown by using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique on glass substrate. The optical and electrical properties of these films were investigated for different doping concentrations, oxygen partial pressures, substrate temperatures, and film thickness. The films were deposited at different substrate temperatures (room temperature to $600^{\circ}C$). The best opto-electrical properties is shown by the film deposited at substrate temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ with oxygen partial pressure of 80 m Torr and the gallium concentration of 2 wt%. The as obtained lowest resistivity is $9.57{\times}10^{-3}\;{\Omega}cm$ with the average transmission of 80% in the visible region and an optical band gap (indirect allowed) of 4.26 eV.

High quality indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films were grown by pulse laser deposition (PLD) on flexible polyethersulphone (PES) substrates. The electrical, optical, and surface morphological properties of these films were examined as a function of substrate temperature and oxygen pressure. ITO thin films, deposited by PLD on a PES substrate at room temperature and an oxygen pressure of 15 mTorr, have a low electrical resistivity of $2.9{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ and a high optical transmittance of 84 % in the visible range. They were used as the anode in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The maximum electro luminescence (EL) and current density at 100 $cd/m^2$ were 2500 $cd/m^{2}$ and 2 $mA/m^{2}$, respectively, and the external quantum efficiency of the OLEDs was found to be 2.0 %.
Various methods have been proposed for enhancing the contrast of laser speckle contrast image (LSCI) in subcutaneous blood flow measurements. However, the LSCI still suffers from low image contrast due to tissue turbidity. Herein, a physicochemical tissue optical clearing (PCTOC) method was employed to enhance the contrast of LSCI. Ex vivo and in vivo experiments were performed with porcine skin samples and male ICR mice, respectively. The ex vivo LSCIs were obtained before and 90 min after the application of the PCTOC and in vivo LSCIs were obtained for 60 min after the application of the PCTOC. In order to obtain the skin recovery images, saline was applied for 30 min after the application of the PCTOC was completed. The visible appearance of the tubing under ex vivo samples and the in vivo vasculature gradually enhanced over time. The LSCI increased as a function of time after the application of the PCTOC in both ex vivo and in vivo experiments, and properly recovered to initial conditions after the application of saline in the in vivo experiment. The LSCI combined with the PCTOC was greatly enhanced even in deep vasculature. It is expected that similar results will be obtained in in vivo human studies.

ZnTe semiconductor is very attractive materials for optoelectronic devices in the visible green spectral region because of it has direct bandgap of 2.26 eV. The prototypes of ZnTe light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been reported [1], showing that their green emission peak closely matches the most sensitive region of the human eye. Another application to photovoltaics proved that ZnTe is useful for the production of high-efficiency multi-junction solar cells [2,3]. By using the pulse laser deposition system, ZnTe thin films were deposited on ZnO thin layer, which is grown on (0001) Al2O3substrates. To produce the plasma plume from an ablated ZnO and ZnTe target, a pulsed (10 Hz) YGA:Nd laser with energy density of 95 mJ/$cm^2$ and wavelength of 266 nm by a nonlinear fourth harmonic generator was used. The laser spot focused on the surface of the ZnO and ZnTe target by using an optical lens was approximately 1 mm2. The base pressure of the chamber was kept at a pressure around $10^{-6}$ Torr by using a turbo molecular pump. The oxygen gas flow was controlled around 3 sccm by using a mass flow controller system. During the ZnTe deposition, the substrate temperature was $400^{\circ}C$ and the ambient gas pressure was $10^{-2}$ Torr. The structural properties of the samples were analyzed by XRD measurement. The optical properties were investigated by using the photoluminescence spectra obtained with a 325 nm wavelength He-Cd laser. The film surface and carrier concentration were analyzed by an atomic force microscope and Hall measurement system.
For the protection of the local air quality and the global atmosphere, the emissions of trace species including nitric oxides (NO and NO$_2$) from gas turbines are regulated by local governments and by the International Civil Aviation Organization. In-situ measurements of such species are needed not only for the development of advanced low-emission combustion concepts but also for providing emissions data required for the sound assessment of the effects of the emissions on environment. We have been developing a laser absorption system that has a capability of simultaneous determination of NO and NO$_2$concentrations in the exhaust jets from aero gas turbines. A diode laser operating near 1.8 micrometer is used for the detection of NO while a separated visible tunable diode laser operating near 676 nanometers is used for NO$_2$. The sensitivities at elevated temperature conditions were determined for simulated gas mixtures heated up to 500K in a heated cell of a straight 0.5 m optical path. Sensitivity limits estimated as were 30 ppmv-m and 3.7 ppmv-m for NO and NO$_2$, respectively, at a typical exhaust gas temperature of 800K. Experiments using the simulated exhaust flows have proven that $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ vapor - both major combustion products - do not show any interference in the NO or NO$_2$ measurements. The measurement system has been applied to the NO/NO$_2$ measurements in NO and NO$_2$ doped real combustion gas jets issuing from a rectangular nozzle having 0.4 m optical path. The lower detection limits of the system were considerably decreased by using a multipass optical cell. A pair of off-axis parabola mirrors successfully suppressed the beam steering in the combustion gas jets by centralizing the fluctuating beam in sensor area of the detectors.
