Purpose: The aims of the present study were to compare the image quality and visibility of tooth cracks between conventional methods and swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and to develop an automatic detection technique for tooth cracks by SS-OCT imaging. Methods: We evaluated SS-OCT with a near-infrared wavelength centered at 1,310 nm over a spectral bandwidth of 100 nm at a rate of 50 kHz as a new diagnostic tool for the detection of tooth cracks. The reliability of the SS-OCT images was verified by comparing the crack lines with those detected using conventional methods. After performing preprocessing of the obtained SS-OCT images to emphasize cracks, an algorithm was developed and verified to detect tooth cracks automatically. Results: The detection capability of SS-OCT was superior or comparable to that of trans-illumination, which did not discriminate among the cracks according to depth. Other conventional methods for the detection of tooth cracks did not sense initial cracks with a width of less than $100{\mu}m$. However, SS-OCT detected cracks of all sizes, ranging from craze lines to split teeth, and the crack lines were automatically detected in images using the Hough transform. Conclusions: We were able to distinguish structural cracks, craze lines, and split lines in tooth cracks using SS-OCT images, and to automatically detect the position of various cracks in the OCT images. Therefore, the detection capability of SS-OCT images provides a useful diagnostic tool for cracked tooth syndrome.

Among marine accidents caused by bad weather, visibility restrictions caused by sea fog occurrence cause accidents such as ship strand and ship bottom damage, and at the same time involve casualties caused by accidents, which continue to occur every year. In addition, low visibility at sea is emerging as a social problem such as causing considerable inconvenience to islanders in using transportation as passenger ships are collectively delayed and controlled even if there are local differences between regions. Moreover, such measures are becoming more problematic as they cannot objectively quantify them due to regional deviations or different criteria for judging observations from person to person. Currently, the VTS of each port controls the operation of the ship if the visibility distance is less than 1km, and in this case, there is a limit to the evaluation of objective data collection to the extent that the visibility of sea fog depends on the visibility meter or visual observation. The government is building a marine weather signal sign and sea fog observation networks for sea fog detection and prediction as part of solving these obstacles to marine traffic safety, but the system for observing locally occurring sea fog is in a very insufficient practical situation. Accordingly, this paper examines domestic and foreign policy trends to solve social problems caused by low visibility at sea and provides basic data on the need for government support to ensure maritime traffic safety due to sea fog by factually investigating and analyzing social problems. Also, this aims to establish a more stable maritime traffic operation system by blocking marine safety risks that may ultimately arise from sea fog in advance.

This paper presents vision-based techniques for underwater landmark detection, map-based localization, and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) in structured underwater environments. A variety of underwater tasks require an underwater robot to be able to successfully perform autonomous navigation, but the available sensors for accurate localization are limited. A vision sensor among the available sensors is very useful for performing short range tasks, in spite of harsh underwater conditions including low visibility, noise, and large areas of featureless topography. To overcome these problems and to a utilize vision sensor for underwater localization, we propose a novel vision-based object detection technique to be applied to MCL (Monte Carlo Localization) and EKF (Extended Kalman Filter)-based SLAM algorithms. In the image processing step, a weighted correlation coefficient-based template matching and color-based image segmentation method are proposed to improve the conventional approach. In the localization step, in order to apply the landmark detection results to MCL and EKF-SLAM, dead-reckoning information and landmark detection results are used for prediction and update phases, respectively. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated by experiments with an underwater robot platform in an indoor water tank and the results are discussed.

Detecting moving objects from a video sequence is a fundamental and critical task in video surveillance, traffic monitoring and analysis, and human detection and tracking. It is very difficult to detect moving objects in a video sequence degraded by the environmental factor such as fog. In particular, the color of an object become similar to the neighbor and it reduces the saturation, thus making it very difficult to distinguish the object from the background. For such a reason, it is shown that the performance and reliability of object detection and tracking are poor in the foggy weather. In this paper, we propose a novel method to improve the performance of object detection, combining a haze removal algorithm and a local histogram-based object tracking method. For the quantitative evaluation of the proposed system, information retrieval measurements, recall and precision, are used to quantify how well the performance is improved before and after the haze removal. As a result, the visibility of the image is enhanced and the performance of objects detection is improved.
More than 42 000 fires occur nationwide and cause over 2500 casualties every year. There is a lack of specialized equipment, and rescue operations are conducted with a minimal number of apparatuses. Through-the-wall radars (TTWRs) can improve the rescue efficiency, particularly under limited visibility due to smoke, walls, and collapsed debris. To overcome detection challenges and maintain a small-form factor, a TTWR system-on-chip (SoC) and its architecture have been proposed. Additive reception based on coherent clocks and reconfigurability can fulfill the TTWR demands. A clock-based single-chip infrared radar transceiver with embedded control logic is implemented using a 130-nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor. Clock signals drive the radar operation. Signal-to-noise ratio enhancements are achieved using the repetitive coherent clock schemes. The hand-held prototype radar that uses the TTWR SoC operates in real time, allowing seamless data capture, processing, and display of the target information. The prototype is tested under various pseudo-disaster conditions. The test standards and methods, developed along with the system, are also presented.

This paper proposes new recognition method of road lanes misty day. The method enables autonomous-driving of cars and the safety of the drivers while driving with bad visibility in foggy roads. The proposed method, firstly, determines whether the foggy or not according to pixel number distributions and starting point of the fog period from input images. If it is foggy then the median filter's size of the Retinex algorithm is set to 1000 or more and it performs histogram equalization and normalization. The computer simulation results show that the proposed method can recognize better long distances and fine detection than earlier methods.
A novel approach for integrating active sensing data interrogation algorithms for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications is presented. These algorithms cover Lamb wave propagation, impedance methods, and sensor diagnostics. Contrary to most active-sensing SHM techniques, which utilize only a single signal processing method for damage identification, a suite of signal processing algorithms are employed and grouped into one package to improve the damage detection capability. A MATLAB-based user interface, referred to as HOPS, was created, which allows the analyst to configure the data acquisition system and display the results from each damage identification algorithm for side-by-side comparison. By grouping a suite of algorithms into one package, this study contributes to and enhances the visibility and interpretation of the active-sensing methods related to damage identification. This paper will discuss the detailed descriptions of the damage identification techniques employed in this software and outline future issues to realize the full potential of this software.
In recent years, with the development of automobile technology, smart system technology that assists safe driving has been developed. A camera is installed on the front and rear of the vehicle as well as on the left and right sides to detect and warn of collision risks and hazards. Beyond the technology of simple black-box recording via cameras, we are developing intelligent systems that combine various computer vision technologies. However, most related studies have been developed to optimize performance in laboratory-like environments that do not take environmental factors such as weather into account. In this paper, we propose a method to detect object by restoring visibility in image with degraded image due to weather factors such as fog. First, the image quality degradation such as fog is detected in a single image, and the image quality is improved by restoring using an intermediate value filter. Then, we used an adaptive feature extraction method that removes unnecessary elements such as noise from the improved image and uses it to recognize objects with only the necessary features. In the proposed method, it is shown that more feature points are extracted than the feature points of the region of interest in the improved image.

This paper presents multimodal image fusion with human pose for detecting abnormal human behaviors in low illumination conditions. Detecting human behaviors in low illumination conditions is challenging due to its limited visibility of the objects of interest in the scene. Multimodal image fusion simultaneously combines visual information in the visible spectrum and thermal radiation information in the long-wave infrared spectrum. We propose an abnormal event detection scheme based on the multimodal fused image and the human poses using the keypoints to characterize the action of the human body. Our method assumes that human behaviors are well correlated to body keypoints such as shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips. In detail, we extracted the human keypoint coordinates from human targets in multimodal fused videos. The coordinate values are used as inputs to train a multilayer perceptron network to classify human behaviors as normal or abnormal. Our experiment demonstrates a significant result on multimodal imaging dataset. The proposed model can capture the complex distribution pattern for both normal and abnormal behaviors.

Visibility of lane marking is impaired at night or in the rain, which thereby threatens traffic safety. Recently, various studies and technologies have been developed to improve lane marking visibility, such as the extension of lane marking life expectancy (up to 1.5 times), improvement of lane marking equipment productivity, improvement of lane marking visibility by applying phosphorescent material mixed paint. Cost-benefit analysis was performed with considering various benefit items that can be expected. About 45% of traffic accidents would be prevented by improving lane marking visibility. Additionally, accident reduction benefit and traffic congestion reduction benefit were calculated as much as 246 billion KRW per year and 12 billion KRW per year, respectively, by reducing repaint cycle due to enhanced durability. 45 billion KRW per year is expected to reduced with improved lane detection performance of autonomous vehicle. Meanwhile, total increased cost when introducing phosphorescent material mixed paint to 91,195km of nationwide road is identified as 1922 billion KRW per year. However, economic feasibility could not be secured with 0.16 of cost-benefit ratio when applied to the road network as a whole. In case of "Accident Hot Spot" analyzing section window (400m), one or more fatality or two or more injured (one or more injured in case of less than 2 lanes per direction) per year were caused by pavement marking related accident, economic feasibility was secured. In detail, 3.91 of cost-benefit ratio is estimated with comparison of the installation cost for 5,697 of accident hot spot and accident reduction benefit. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been discussed.
