Wave energy harvesting system using OWC(Oscillating Water Column) and MB (Movable Body) attached at the caisson breakwater was studied. This system was suggested to maximize wave energy extraction using resonant phenomena of oscillating water column and buoy in wave channel (Park et al., 2014). Not only incident waves but also reflected waves from the breakwater can be used as sources of exciting force for harvesting wave energy efficiently. Using Galerkin finite model based on the linear wave theory (Park, 1991), the performance of the system was evaluated for various damping ratios of power take off system. Numerical results show that the proposed system is excellent in efficiency compared with that of conventional system and the performance of the system is governed by the resonance of oscillating water column in the wave channel. In addition, the additional efforts to minimize viscous damping was found to be necessary because viscous damping occurring in the channel and around the moving buoy is significant in generation efficiency.
Transmission tower-line systems are commonly slender and generally possess a small stiffness and low structural damping. They are prone to impulsive excitations induced by cable rupture and may experience strong vibration. Excessive deformation and vibration of a transmission tower-line system subjected to cable rupture may induce a local destruction and even failure event. A little work has yet been carried out to evaluate the performance of transmission tower-line systems in mountain areas subjected to cable rupture. In addition, the control for cable rupture induced vibration of a transmission tower-line system has not been systematically conducted. In this regard, the dynamic response analysis of a transmission tower-line system in mountain areas subjected to cable rupture is conducted. Furthermore, the feasibility of using viscous fluid dampers to suppress the cable rupture-induced vibration is also investigated. The three dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of a transmission tower-line system is first established and the mathematical model of a mountain is developed to describe the equivalent scale and configuration of a mountain. The model of a tower-line-mountain system is developed by taking a real transmission tower-line system constructed in China as an example. The mechanical model for the dynamic interaction between the ground and transmission lines is proposed and the mechanical model of a viscous fluid damper is also presented. The equations of motion of the transmission tower-line system subjected to cable rupture without/with viscous fluid dampers are established. The field measurement is carried out to verify the analytical FE model and determine the damping ratios of the example transmission tower-line system. The dynamic analysis of the tower-line system is carried out to investigate structural performance under cable rupture and the validity of the proposed control approach based on viscous fluid dampers is examined. The made observations demonstrate that cable rupture may induce strong structural vibration and the implementation of viscous fluid dampers with optimal parameters can effectively suppress structural responses.
This paper deals with a study of striker type impact hammer drill for improving the drilling performance. The study was performed through a numerical simulation of the impact hammer mechanism and an experimental comparison of the numerical simulation results was followed. Optimization of the impact mechanism was also performed. The numerical model of the impact hammer drill takes into account the striker motion and the effects of the pressure in the cylinder as well as the friction acting on the striker. The equation of motion is solved with the pressure equation in the cylinder including the friction force. The friction is considered as a combination of Coulomb friction and viscous damping friction. At the moment of impact, an ideal impact model that uses restitution coefficient is used to calculate the sudden change of the striker motion. The numerically simulated impact force shows a good agreement with the experimental result and thus, the validity of the numerical model is proven. Based upon the proposed model, an optimization was performed to improve the impact force of the hammer drill. The objective function is to maximize the impact force and the used design variables are striker mass, frequency of piston, bit guide mass, cylindrical diameter and dimensions of the mechanism components. Each design variable and some other conditions that are essential to manitain normal operation of the hammer drill are considered as constraints. The optimized result show a remarkable improvement in impact force and an experimental proof was investigated.

In this paper, 2-DOF vehicle suspension system with a semiactive on-off damper was studied for improving the ride comfort. It is known that a nonlinear hydraulic damper, which generates force proportional to the square of the relative velocity, can describe the actual fluid resisting type damper more properly than the traditional viscous damping model. On the other hand, hydraulic damper adoption in analysis makes the system nonlinear and causes difficulties to get the system response. In this work, time domain direct integration method was used to calculate system displacement and acceleration. first of all, the response of the suspension system experiencing a given road profile was optimized by Lagrangian multiplier method within the range of given damping coefficients. The appropriate on-loaf damping values were obtained by averaging the already calculated optimum damping coefficients from Lagrangian techniques. The criterion to control the on-off mechanism was determined by examining the suspension efficiency. It was found that the best out of practically applicable criteria is following the sign (positive and negative) of the multiplication of relative displacement and velocity. Judging from the theoretical calculations, it was proved that the semiactive on-off damper can increase suspension efficiency as much as 8-11% in object function.
Rotary dampers are damping devices which provide high resistance to shaft rotation. Rotary dampers are being used in various areas to enable the gentle opening and closing of the rotation motion relative to home furniture, industry machinery and automotive parts. Rotary dampers can be installed directly at the rotating point of a various part and can achieve uniform, gentle movement which increases quality and value of products. And generally, the silicone fluid is used as the damping medium because of its stable viscous properties. The movement of these little decelerators can be achieved with a high viscosity of working fluid and throttles installed in the body of the rotary damper. The damping force can be achieved clockwise, anti-clockwise or in both directions according to the structure of the orifices or throttles. In this paper, the torque performances of the rotary damper containing air in the working fluid were studied. For this purpose, the torque characteristic of the rotary damper according to the variation of various operating conditions such as clearance of leakage, dimensions of groove orifice, content ratio of air, etc., were simulated with AMEsim software.

A semi-active suspension is an automotive technology that controls the vertical movement of the vehicle while the car is driving. The system therefore virtually eliminates body roll and pitch variation in many driving situations including cornering, accelerating, and braking. This technology allows car manufacturers to achieve a higher degree of both ride quality and car handling by keeping the tires perpendicular to the road in corners, allowing for much higher levels of grip and control. An onboard computer detects body movement from sensors located throughout the vehicle and, using data calculated by opportune control techniques, controls the action of the suspension. Semi-active systems can change the viscous damping coefficient of the shock absorber, and do not add energy to the suspension system. Though limited in their intervention (for example, the control force can never have different direction than that of the current speed of the suspension), semi-active suspensions are less expensive to design and consume far less energy. In recent time, the research in semi-active suspensions has continued to advance with respect to their capabilities, narrowing the gap between semi-active and fully active suspension systems. In this paper we are studied the characteristics of vehicle movement during the field test with conventional and semi-active suspension system.

An Amplitude Proportional Friction Damper (APFD) is considered in order to improve the characteristics of Coulomb friction damper. The frictional force is proportional to the amplitude in APFD system and the system is non-linear as is Coulomb damper system. A free vibration analysis on the 1-DOF system has made to demonstrate the characteristics of the APFD system. The results show that APFD system has similar damping characteristics to the viscous damper. Also, the solution for the response of a base-excited system with APFD is developed through the application of a Fourier series to represent the frictional force of APFD. It is assumed that no stick-slips occur during any portion of the steady-state oscillation.
General joystick using spring only has a vibration when operaor drops the joystick. If it is used as input of motorized wheelchair, its system have a serious problem which operator fall into dangerous situation. Therefore, In this paper proposed non-vibration joustick which control a motorized wheelchair. Non-vibration joystick was designed which return to origin point when operator drops joystick by mistake. Reflected force of non- vibration joystick is defined as addition displacement and variation rate. And each parameter has elasticity of spring and viscosity of DC servo motor. Through simulation for virtual environment, we found two coefficient to return origin point smoothly when a disabled person drops the joystick. In case of larger elastic coefficient of spring than viscous coefficient, we confirmed the result has the equal vibration of general joystick (under-damping). In opposite case, joystick returned to origin point with excessive force. As a application of non-vibration joystick, we experimented wall-following controlling. In this trial, we corroborated that joystick follows smoothly around the corridors.

In this study, an impact model and impact response analysis method was suggested for the impacts between arbitrary shaped bodies. Unlike the impacts between geometrically simple structures, there is no rules to analyze the impacts between general elastic structures First of all, it has been attempted to explain the impoot between arbitrary elastic structures as the elastic deformation of a virtual contact spring in the vicinity of contact points. The contact stiffness and the exponent are determined from the Hertz's contact theory and F. E. analysis. In order to evaluate the validities and limitations of the proposed methods, an impact tester and the miniature of container, missile and isolators have been provided and tested experimentally. All the experiments were performed with various impact conditions. The results obtained by the proposed methods were directly compared with the measured values in terms of maximum contract force, contact duration, the shape of contact force and the structure responses. The computed contact force and responses, using this proposed methods, were very close to the measured results, unless any plastic deformations were presented.

The recently developed marine engines for propulsion of ships have higher torsional exciting force than previous engines to improve the propulsion efficiency and to reduce specific fuel oil consumption. As a result, a viscous damper or viscous-spring damper is installed in front of marine engine to control the torsional vibration. In the case of viscous damper, it is supposed that there is no elastic connection in the silicon oil, which is filled between the damper housing and inertia ring. However, In reality, the silicon oil with high viscosity possesses torsional stiffness and has non-linear dynamic characteristics according to the operating temperature and frequency of the viscous damper. In this study, the damping characteristics of a viscous damper used to control the torsional vibration of the shafting system have been reviewed and the characteristics of torsional vibration of the shafting system equipped with a corresponding viscous damper have been examined. In addition, it is examined how to interpret the theoretically optimal dynamic characteristics of a viscous damper for this purpose, and the optimum design for the propulsion shafting system has been suggested considering the operating temperature and aging. when the torsional vibration of the shafting system is controlled by a viscous damper filled with highly viscous silicon oil.
